For years, it's been a cherished tradition to gather at Isaak's every May 15 with friends and family. We've always loved the laid-back atmosphere and the walleye fish and chips--something we looked forward to annually. This year, we were shocked to arrive and find that Isaak's is now a 18+ establishment, even on the outdoor patio. When we inquired politely about the change, the staff sympathetically let us know the management changed and it was now 18+. I could tell they felt bad about delivering the news. I inquired about ordering takeout and was told that if I did, not to let the owner know there were kids in the group. For takeout. The place was nearly empty, the dining area now transformed into a casino. Clearly, Isaak's has shifted away from being a community spot and is now chasing a different crowd--tourists, not local Montanans. Even if our group is all adults next year, we won't be coming back. It's a real shame to lose what was once a special, annual tradition. Isaak's under new management just isn't the same. read more

Ate here the other night with a friend while on a multi day fishing trip and we just laugh every time we drive by. Ordered queso, poutine, and a pulled pork sandwich. Both the queso and poutine were made up of store bought nacho cheese, the cheapest kind you could find. Pulled pork wasn't even pulled, just chunks of tough meat. Drinks weren't good either, pretty much straight liquor. Getting an app, dinner, and two drinks for two people was over $80 with tip. The food here is extremely overpriced and doesn't even compare to cheap diner food. I suspect since they are the only place in town and a lot of wealthy clientele around they think they can charge whatever they want. It's not worth it! Even by Montana standards, the food here is terrible. Better off cooking yourself or grabbing a frozen pizza from the gas station. Well this is the third time we have eaten here. They will be missed. They are shutting down 11-5-22 for the winter. There food every time we have eaten here has been outstanding. Izaak's is the place in Craig MT to eat. It's filled with fly fishing folks and their families. The food is very good. Izaak's was my brother's treat to me for donating a weeks with of work at his cabin in Wolf Creek. We had drinks in the bar while waiting on our table. Once seated, i had the BBQ sampler - pulled pork (in an interesting mustard sauce), ribs, and i think tri-tip. All very tasty and a lot of food. Considering the amount of food we got, the prices were very good, and lower than other places i have been. I eat at Izaak's whenever i visit the cabin, and i'll be back again! read more

But that's only a few months out of the year here in MT. Arrival- we're 100%fine waiting for a table. That's expected. If you're reading reviews because they offered you a job here, please read this first. The two main cooks (John and Mel) are extreme alcoholics. While I was working with them (I quit, for the record) I would see them drink beer and take shots frequently while on the line. They are also very, VERY angry alcoholics. Almost every night there would be a problem with Mel having withdrawals or something going on, and he would fly off the handle about anything, or even nothing. Mel would frequently get in my face and threaten to fight me. They are both very obviously struggling with substance abuse issues while trying to run a restaurant, I assure you these other negative reviews are more than just one-offs. I thought it was just me they would treat like this, until they hired someone else a couple of weeks after I started, and they treated him the same way - like trash. They will try to demean you, make you feel stupid, whatever they can do because they think they have power over you while you're working for them. Several times, I would hear him getting angry and raising his voice at the serving staff because they weren't selling enough Swordfish. He didn't even consider maybe people just don't want swordfish, and would demean his serving staff for not selling them enough, as if they were car salesmen. This place is extremely toxic to work at. Please heed my warning, if you go to work for these two cooks, they will treat you very poorly. I lasted about a month before I quit, and I hope this warning will save someone before they fall into the cesspit of working for these people. read more

Good food- the cook likes things in the spicy side. I ordered the sweet potato curry soup and it was very spicy. Our server- super nice gal gave me some half and half which made it tolerable to eat. I like spice- but not so much for a curry soup. The soup tasted good, just too spicy. The walleye fried fish was delicious! Still had some spice too, but the batter helped tame it down some. It came with coleslaw which tasted ok. I also had a salad- the croutons were spicy- didn't care much for that either. Most of the greens were fresh, there were some wilted leaves, the garlic dressing was interesting- I think it needed a little more acid to balance it out. We also prefer the bread pudding, and it was delicious! The serving sizes were very good. Nice ambiance, very friendly staff and great service. I would return for the fried fish, and the bread pudding- these were delicious. read more

Bad business or bad employee....you decide. Party of 7 adults, 3 kids (10 total). Of which, we had family members visiting from out of state that we wanted to show the best of our beautiful state. With the size of our group, we called 3 days in advance to make a reservation. We found out reservations are not accepted which is totally fine and not uncommon. This was and is not an issue. However, in the conversation we made it known the size of our party. At that time, we were not informed of any rules regarding party size. 3 days later (Saturday), we traveled from Great Falls with the intention of arriving ahead of the dinner rush (planned to arrive at 4:00 p.m. when dining room opens) We arrived in Craig just a bit early but decided to grab some drinks in the bar while we waited for the dining room to open. As we entered the bar area at 3:45pm, we found an old surly bar tender. My mom greeted him as we piled into the bar area and said we were a bit early for dinner but we wanted to get drinks. He quickly announced that we would not be able to dine together as it is their policy not to sit tables of more than 4 people amd we would have to sit separately. Ok.....we can sit at separate tables if we can have them close together... while not ideal, we could adjust. He then made it known that not only could we not sit together but that we could not order simultaneously and one group would be served before the other group. That's when things got outrageous. When questioned why there was such a rule, the bar tender stated verbatim "because the owner does not want to serve big groups ". When questioned why that would affect how many meals would be served/cooked and how do they handle it when completely unrelated/separate people come in simultaneously? He stated it's a "numbers and timing thing and if the owner, who is also the cook, got orders for more than 4 people at a time he would "lose his shit". (Yes, he actually said that). It makes absolutely no sense. This dude made no effort to be polite about it. He stated (seriously, verbatum) "I'll let you eat here but these are the parameters". We did not see anything posted regarding this unusual, and completely anti-business, policy anywhere so this dude could just be talking out his backside and chased off, what would have been business that likely would have been $800-$900 in business, or the owner is screwing himself out of business. Either way, we will not be back and ensuring others know about experience. I should also share that this was a second chance trip from the last time we tried to eat here. Rewind to last Summer where we came off the river from a day of boating with a smaller group of 8, again with 3 kids (5 adults and 3 kids). We were informed quite rudely, that kids were not welcome because kids are disruptive to other diners and do not mesh with the dining experience they offer. We somehow convinced them to let us dine there with our 3 kids anyways and they begrudgingly sat our group. From there, the experience was average service but amazing food. Why did we give this place another chance??? They didn't deserve it after the crap last summer and they definitely will not be getting our business in the future. As soon as we were back in service, we called the Rib & Chop House, asked it they accept reservations and if they had an opening for an 11 top that included 3 kids. They gal on the phone was so warm and friendly and set us up with a reservation just 30 minutes in advance from arrival back into Great Falls. read more

Almost totally awesome meal. Our calimare appetizer was delicious. My salmon was perfectly grilled and the wife's walleye was expertly cooked. The fries and vege sides we're great. The huck margaritas were very yummy. We took dessert home, a blueberry crisp, and it was no good. The berries tested old and were very chewy. Service was excellent, as usual. Nice atmosphere. We'll be back, but not for the blueberry crisp. read more

Owner alwas a complete jerk on Mother's Day. He was upset that I asked for a lemonade with grenadine. The hostess gave us a estimated 60 min wait and encouraged us to order a beverage from the bar while we waited. The owner (behind the bar) was a complete ass and stated "this is not a teen bar, we don't have grenadin". He was aggressive and intimidating. I won't go back. NOT family friendly. I let him know he was out of line and offensive. He told me to kiss off. What kind of customer service is this?? What a shame. We went to Cascase and had a lovely Mother's Day dinner after fishing. After a cold day on the river we were seated by friendly staff. Nice beer and wine selection. My buddy had the salmon (served via cedar plank) and said it was very good. I had heard and read a lot of rumors about this place and now they aren't the only game in town. Tried to go on a Tuesday night but they are closed. Went back on Thursday, was pretty quiet. Waitress was pleasant enough, made a few recommendations. We ordered 2 different styles of wings which were good and probably enough but we ordered dinner. Ribs, burgers, salmon, pork chop. Saw multiple tables seated before us that just showed up 4.) The elderly man managing that night couldn't have been ruder to me when I asked about our table (he could see on the list that we were missed) 5.) Instead of owning up to the mistake tried to flip it back on me I'm am a born and raised Montanan. I have worked in the service industry previously and am very understanding that it is tough times right now....but this night that was not the case. Went for dinner on our first night in the area and ended up going back for two more nights in spite of having brought plenty of food to prepare at the house we were renting. Everything we ate and drank was really great! Chef John creates wonderful delights in that kitchen. Over the three nights we had lamb chops, walleye fish and chips, duck confit, ribeye steak, Milk Stout beef stew, beef tip lettuce wraps, barbecue ribs, and the cheeseburger. Caesar salad was noteworthy as were the deserts we tried. Cocktails were also excellent after a day of throwing tiny flies to big fish. Only restaurant I have been in where people come in wearing their waders, funny! Another unusual thing, we ate all of the leftovers we brought to the house where all of food was waiting for us. Only 'bad' thing here is you can't talk while you're in there because it is literally too loud to hear anything at all; anything. You can not even hear the wait person speak. Seriously, it's that loud. No exaggeration - you will not be able to converse with any other person at all while you are inside. Now, the food; it's killer. I had Fresh Swordfish, with Basmati Rice and Kimchi, and it was "Excellent!". Spectacular! I don't care how loud it is, if I'm anywhere near Craig, I'm going to eat at Izaak's - "if" they're open, which I have been told is a very unpredictable thing, and enough so that you would be advised to check first before making the trek. read more

Ok, this is outrageous. Nothing compares to Izaak's! In the beginning it looks like a tacky old fishing restaurant on the bank of the Missouri, but it is not. The food is simply amazing! The brisket platter is plenty for at least three people. The brisket is super tender and the sauce is outstanding! There is just one problem, and that is just that it took an hour to actually order, but the restaurant was full, so I will not let that affect this review. The owner, manager or whatever he is is the most rude uncourteous person I have ever experienced in an eating establishment. The bartender was extremely rude, pompous and intentionally ignored us while a local shop owner and his wife asked him to help us first (we were still ignored) We live in Helena and are Montana natives that have spent many many days of our lives in Craig and have supported local shops and community events. Wow! What an unexpected surprise. I don't know who the chef is, or how they got them to come to Craig, Montana (maybe for the fishing or outdoor recreation?), but they know how to create some amazing dishes. First, they have a full bar and a good-enough selection of beer and wine. Next, the appetizers are super tasty and pretty healthy sized. Their salads are fresh, creative, and more filling than you would expect. They have great soups to choose from, along with a soup of the day. The main food selections are incredible. The barbecue is smoked to perfection, and the fish options are fantastic. Their meatloaf is honestly the best I've ever had. We didn't try their burgers, but i can't imagine they wouldn't be amazing. And then the desserts! OMG, put some of your meal in a takeout box and save room for dessert. They had a bread pudding the day we were in, and it was world-class! Also, the service was attentive and helpful, even though they were very busy, particularly when asked questions about their gluten-free options for one person in our party. The beef for the burgers was probably very high quality, but the patties had been pre-formed and frozen. As a result, the burger tasted old and stale. Definitely not worth the price and really kind of a crime to waste good Montana beef in such a manner. The chips/salsa/guacamole were good. The biggest problem with this place is the owner/manager. There was a problem with our bill and he became angry and defensive when we brought it to his attention. This is some of the best food we've had in the Helena area, and certainly the best service. The smoked trout, pulled pork, brisket, and salad were all exceptional, and the calamari was perfect- fresh, tender, crispy and not oily. The menu, and the clientele, cover the full spectrum from ritzy to ultra- casual, and the staff is friendly, welcoming, and supremely professional. Izaak's also makes a point of supporting and serving locally-produced foods, to excellent effect. The drive is also spectacular, and well-worth it. Well done, folks. Never again. I've tried this place three times now and shame on me! Rude staff, the owner is the least professional person I think I've ever met. On one occasion, one of our party members told the owner/chef that her salmon was not cooked enough for her liking and asked if it could be cooked more. Instead of apologizing and taking it back, he tells her too bad, that's how he prepares it and to talk to the waitress about it. Another time they wouldn't seat us until everybody walked through the door and when they did seat us, it took forever to get service. Chef/owner complains about Montana non-stop and really does not do anything to make a local customer feel welcome but he will bend over backwards if he thinks you are a high-flying tourist. Possibly the best burger I have ever had. It was on the menu as Kobe beef, and I was skeptical. A restaraunt in little Craig Montana serving Kobe beef? Well, all I can tell you is that it was the most darn tasty burger I have ever had in a restaraunt. They also cure their own bacon and the slices were huge, thick and delicious. Had the clam chowder as well, it was really good. Service: Attentive, quick, and the kind where they actually seem interrested that you are there. A refreshing change. We stopped in there after a day fishing on the Missouri. This seems to be the spot for that since it looked like 90% of the people in there had just gotten off of the water. I'm really glad we did. During our dinner two mice (yes, the disease infested, furry kind) ran around and frolicked in the dining room! The wait staff laughed about it and management ignored it. For the price of your food you certainly don't expect to share your meal with the local rodent population! I travel a lot for business and found myself in Montana. We got a recommendation from one of the offices we worked at and made the lovely scenic drive to Craig. Great atmosphere at this restaurant and very friendly service. Also, the food was delicious and far above what I expected to find! Great local beers, that I would recommend you try. Others have thought it was a bit pricey; however, living in a big city I found everything quite reasonable. My coworker and I got an appetizer, two entrees, 2 sizable side items, and a couple of craft beers a piece and it was under $50 a person. Highly recommend! read more

Strange way to run a business to have numerous empty tables but not seat anyone, the staff has a generally poor attitude and not good customer service skills. But the drinks are good as was the food. We just had one of the WORST dining experiences ever. Thank god the company at dinner was amazing. Aside from the incredibly rude bartenders..who actually tossed my change on the counter without a word, the rest of the experience just went downhill from there. We had a party of 14, BEGGED for a reservation days prior and still had to wait for 1/2 an hour to be seated. After ordering over $700.00 of food, we were told we could only divide our tab three ways. SERIOUSLY? The waitress was rude and the "manager" was sincerely awful. She actually was verbally abusive and told us to "fuck off" when we questioned their 3 card policy. I will absolutely never never patronize this establishment again. And I hope you don't either.
