My son is a student at Ithaca so when he called us in Maryland to tell us his car wouldn't start, we began to panic. I have been going to Ithaca Auto for many years. I have always had a great experience there. Several times I have called John with a question on a noise my car is making and he either tells me it's nothing or stop in and I'll take a look at it. I have never felt like I have been taken advantage of there and I have at other places in Ithaca. Not a good feeling when that has happened. I had a one year old car and was told by another place that an entire list of things needed to be done. I simply went in for an oil change. I left there immediately. Lesson learned. I used to go to Tallmadge Tire until they closed when Jim retired. Never though I'd find a place as honest as Tallmadge but I did and it's Ithaca Auto! Had a bit of car trouble during a very inconvenient time and needed my car fixed ASAP! Despite having no appointment times available the next morning, they told me they would take a look anyway in between other appointments. My car was dropped off no fuss and just a couple hours later they called me with a quote. Next thing you know, they addressed the issue ASAP and a couple hours later I picked up my car! In addition, I payed less than what was quoted, as they informed me that the job took less time than estimated! Despite me having confirmed that the quoted price was very fair, they were honest with their labor and I really appreciate that! All- in-all, I was super impressed with the efficient and honest service I got at such a time! This is a truly decent mechanic and I am already recommending it to fellow students! read more

I'm from Long Island. My wife and I went up to Ithaca to go hiking. Of course my weekend was in danger of being ruined when my brakes started making horrific noises. I knew the calipers had frozen closed. (Dammit!) I saw this place had pretty good reviews so I went there. I spoke to Jason, the owner. He told me what it would cost and said he would do his best to get it done by the end of the day. My wife and I walked over to the park and at the end of the hike the car was ready. Wish I could give this place a ZERO. If you want to have unexpected charges and overpriced service than this place is for you. I walked in for a simple battery check. Asked the young blonde woman of that was possible. She said yes. After a 20 min wait they checked by battery to inform me that its needs to be replaced then quoted me $210 plus labor, which I found absurd. So I asked the woman if I can purchase and replace the battery myself from autozone where the battery is $160 and they would code the battery for me. She replied NO. Then I asked her hey I need a bulb replaced, I have a new part that I can give you. Would you be willing to put it in for me? She replied NO we do not use costumer parts. Ok? That's the most rubbish service I have received here in Ithaca. After I declined all their services she then continued to inform me that I owe the shop $40 for the mechanic to CHECK A BATTERY. That is absurd. Advance Auto parts and Autozone for FREE. When I asked her why I wasn't made aware of this charge prior to anyone touching my vehicle she responded by saying "You should never expect anything for free". I took my car Keyes and exited the premise immediately. I should have been informed that there was a charge to check the battery, then as a customer been given the option to proceed or take my vehicle elsewhere which I wasn't. AVOID THIS SHOP LIKE IT'S A PLAGUE!!! I will not be reccomending this place to any of my friends here. I will def not be returning here for any future mechanical work and I suggest all of you do the same. read more

So thankful I found this place! I brought my car to Goodyear to get a new water pump and they quoted me charge me $850 for the parts, labor, and flush. I thought this was expensive so I brought it to Ithaca Auto Service and he quoted me and did the work for $500 and it took only took 1 day. After my positive experience my boyfriend brought his car here to get his breaks replaced and he was charged about $500 less than he had payed at Midas last time. This place is awesome they're very honest with you and don't try to overcharge or sell you on unnecessary things. Definitely my new go to mechanic in Ithaca ! read more

Yes! They are back. This place really is the best. They have a new mechanic, Jason, who quickly repaired my car. He's very friendly and smart, and he didn't even charge me because he said it was such a small job. I wouldn't count on getting a free repair, but you can count on fast, friendly, honest service. The Fall Creek location was nice for me because I could walk to it, but I guess they get more traffic out on Elmira. It's right past the traffic light beyond Buttermilk Falls as you go out of Ithaca. The 67 bus will drop you right at the top of the driveway if you ask (that's how I picked up my car. Warning: it only goes every 2 hours.) read more

I was traveling to the area and had a bad power steering leak. Mercifully, they were able to get my car in on a Friday morning, looked at it promptly, *showed me the part / scope of repair* and gave me a totally reasonable estimate and did the work expertly. Being from out of town, with a significant problem, I feared being taken to the cleaners - went here first due to the positive reviews. I seriously could've hugged the tech when they told me they'd do it. What a relief. I bring my vehicle here every time I have an issue with my car or just need an oil change. John is the one there that works on it and he is very friendly and knowlegeable. It's always done quick and with very reasonable pricing. I highly recommend this shop above anywhere else. I will add, I had purchased a car from Sun Auto in Cortland (which I will NEVER go to again!) When I went in for an inspection and oil change, he noticed my subframe was rotted out and told me so that I could get it fixed as soon as possible. This place is amazing, the people are so kind. I called to set up an appointment and I was able bring my car right away to get inspected. The car was inspected, serviced, and they changed the oil all within an hour. When I brought my car to get serviced at Honda, they told me I had to refill the wiper fluid on my own, but these guys did it for me. This just shows how courteous the practice is here. I was impressed a couple of times that I took my car in there for advice. They struck me as a quite honest and truthful. I was so impressed that I went back to them and bought four new winter tires for my Honda accord. I'll be going back for services as I need it. I took my car here and they made it break down in the middle of a road, then denied responsibility. I came here today for a second opinion. After I got a quote, I drove away, and less than 3 minutes into my drive my car broke down in the middle of Elmira Road. I called Ithaca Auto Service to let them know that my car had broken down on my way home, and asked if I could have the car towed to them as my car was running perfectly before I took it in. I spoke with John, who stated that the only thing they had touched on my car was the air filter, and there was nothing that they did that could cause my car not to move. Since I was blocking the road and could have caused an accident, some good samaritans pushed my car off the road, and another one named George towed it so it was safely in a parking lot. We opened my hood and found that the air filter had never been put back on - it was just sitting under the hood of the car unattached. He reconnected it, and the car drove great again. I called back John at Ithaca Auto Service to let them know that the problem they stated they could not have caused was, in fact, one that they caused, and he did not even apologize or offer to make sure no damage had been done to my car - he just said "Okay." The fact that they left this piece off shows that they should not be trusted with your car, but the fact that they first refused to take another look at it even though I had just left their shop, and then did not apologize when it turned out that the problem was their fault, shows that they also have no sense of responsibility or customer service. Thank you so much to all the people who stopped and helped me and were kind to me, and extra thanks to George for figuring out what was wrong right away. I actually didn't get a service today but I brought in for a second opinion about the issue I had with my car. The man Jason showed me which part was going wrong and what needs to get done to have it fixed and how much it costs. His explanations made sense. The other lady in the waiting area also spoke very highly of him. She says she stuck with him from Cortland where his shop (?) was originally located and then when he moved over here, she came to him (she lives between Cortland and Ithaca). Excellent local auto repair in Ithaca. Be prepared - this shop is FAST! I left my 2 vehicles for repair expecting the usual "get it to you by the end of the day" but instead these guys completed oil changes, brake work and tires within a few short hours. Jason is great - very helpful, personable and John was knowledgeable any time I had questions. They use quality NAPA parts and labor was reasonably priced. When my wife and I first moved in to town, we used Ithaca Auto Service for our inspections and oil changes. a few months ago my wife's car needed a major repair and they were able to fit her in quickly, preformed quality work, and were quite flexible. These past experiences are why I'm not giving them just 1 star. In my last interaction with Ithaca Auto, I was inquiring about the "Free Birthday Oil Change" promotion. The receptionist said that the maintenance had to occur exactly on my birthday. When I asked, what if my birthday is on a Saturday when they are closed, she sharply said that they would not honor it and ended the call. we have had other similar interactions in the last couple of months where the Ithaca Auto treats us like a stereotypical car shop where their word is final and I would have better luck arguing with a post. I understand that a businesses needs policies and limitations, but they also need good customer service, and flexibility when their policies arbitrarily deny services and active promotions. Because of these recent series if events, my wife and I will no longer be bringing our business to Ithaca Auto Service. read more

This place is the best and I wish it was closer to York PA. I had two different vehicles here this year. One car had 4 tires put on it and the other had oil change and service to tire pressure monitoring sensors . I travel to ithaca a lot ( Go Big Red). While I am in Ithaca I usually take opportunity to drop a car off for service . I have been to trombley's $$$$. Hey, if you live in Ithaca , look no further , go here. Ithaca Auto is great! They are affordable and most importantly, honest. I am a college aged female and I never felt like they acted differently towards me because I am a girl, which I experienced in other places in Ithaca (including the Toyota dealership). Before I stared going to Ithaca Auto I went to Midas for a standard oil change and Midas told me that I needed all new brakes, that it was really dangerous and that they could go out at any minute. I decided to go to Ithaca auto for a second opinion and they told me that they were looking a little worn but I definitely had a good few months left. They also didn't charge me for the inspection. That was 4 years ago, and I went to them for everything since then. I recently moved out to Portland, Oregon and I will definitely miss Ithaca Auto. read more
