Whenever I need tire work in Ithaca I try to get here first. Typically i get snows switched out for winter months once a year. I've never had bad work or bad results. These guys have been in business for decades. they seem to know how to run a business and put tires together. I'm not sure if they do any other work besides tires. Waiting room is a bit dark and boring. Could use some love in there. read more

I recently had an inspection done here. The first time it failed for lights and front tires, they brought up the cost for just lights through them and it would've been $100, so i just bought my own lights at autozone for $20. The man at the front told me if I brought it back the reinspection would be free. I fixed everything and brought it back a few days later and my car failed for one singular license plate light out (when it has two) even though the place i took it after here passed it with it out. For the reinspection they also charged me $10, when they said it would be FREE for a reinspection. I DO NOT RECOMMEND. read more

My grad school kid has used Hunt's twice now. Once when he brought his out of state car to school and again when he needed a new transmission (big thanks for Ithaca Auto for recommending Hunts for this work). They did great on the car inspection (NY bans dark window tinting unless it came factory installed). Commented on how the vehicle had no rust (Ithaca ices their roads) and suggested we get undercoating done (Daggett's Garage in Dresden was the closest place that will undercoat your car with FluidFilm each October). We did the oil change and minor service. A few months later the transmission gave out (we knew it would happen sooner or later). AAA towed the car to the garage. Hunt's ordered a rebuilt transmission with a 3 year warranty. It was close to $7k but they did a great job. They did the major service and let us know the timing belt was starting to rattle and should be the next major repair and to do it before it breaks. Cars aren't cheap, but I'm grateful Hunts Auto is there to keep the car in good shape. Everyone needs a good mechanic (also Wilcox Tire is a couple buildings down and is the place to go for snow tires). read more

I have been taking my car to Hunts for 3 years, when I had to buy a car during covid and needed a reliable shop to examine a used car. I came on the recommendation of a good friend. It turned out I needed several repairs and spent a lot of money at Hunts. Recently they charged me for running the codes for a check engine light, then for diagnosing the problem further, but none of this translated to the labor of repair. They also changed the oil when running the diagnostic, knowing that the oil would be drained the next week for the repair. I do not find that they listen to me when I do the research on my problem, and try to discuss what might be the repair. This last repair cost me about $500 more than it should, in that the diagnosis was repeated, as well as two oil changes within 2 weeks. I felt taken advantage of as a woman. read more

I was in need of "emergency" service due to an oil leak to the oil cooler on my Chevy Colorado. It was a Friday night while traveling through Ithaca, and could not find a repair shop anywhere. Thank goodness, Hunt's Auto Service has "first-come/first-serve" service on Saturdays. Tom (customer service) and Joe (mechanic) were very helpful and very professional. I arrived early Saturday morning, the problem was diagnosed quickly, and once the parts were delivered, the repair was completed in a timely manner. I had a few positive experiences here but just got raked over the coals. Hunt's quoted $250 to install a wiring harness for a trailer - a $50 part and about twenty minutes worth of labor. Also $750 for fixing a stuck e-brake. The latter seems excessive, the former is just simply dishonest. I left with no work done whatsoever and was charged a $75 "diagnostic fee." Price gouging is gross. Find somewhere else to take your vehicle. read more

Classic unethical repair shop. They charged hundreds to change 2 fuses. Then lied about how long it took to diagnose the problem. How do I know they lied? I gave them the solution when I brought the car in! It was literally the first result on Google. When I complained, they hemmed and hawed and became arrogant. brought my 2013 Mercedes c300 to Hunts because of a noise coming from under the car , they told me it was an exhaust leak and to take it to the Mercedes dealership , on my way to Rochester the car broke down . cost me $450 to have it taken to Rochester . Turns out it was the U joint making the noise that I herd and it broke and also broke the drive shaft , catalytic converter and several other parts . The car should never have been driven from Hunts .All this amounting to $5,500 ! There was nothing wrong with the exhaust ! I called hunts and told them and all I got was excuses ! This all could have been avoided but they missed it ! They did change my oil tho . I'm out $6,000 just before Christmas ! read more

We have taken our cars to Hunt's for years, and have found them to be accurate and reliable. Their customer service is terrific, they do a good job of assessing your problem up front, and their estimates are on target. Because they are so good, you do need to make an appointment for service you can't just stop by, but that is to be expected given the quality of their work and service. I've taken my car here 3 times and received wonderful service each time. My car was collecting water in the foot well and the dealer wanted 200$ to investigate. I called Hunt's they asked if I had a sun-roof, when I said yes, they said bring it in, the drain's are probably clogged. They charged me 40$ and I haven't had a problem since. Another time I needed my transmission fluid flushed. Dealer wanted 300$, Hunt's did it for 150$. Lastly, my breaks were making a grinding sound and my BF said I probably needed new ones. I took it in to Hunt's they tested the breaks and found that it was just a build up of rust around the edge of the wheel, no replacement needed. They even drove with me in the car to hear the sound that I was talking about, which I couldn't re-produce because they had cleaned the rust off. I needed to have some regular maintenance performed on my car and decided to give Hunt's a second chance. My first experience with them was marginally ok - but I believe that even businesses can have an off day. So I called and talked to a nice man and explained that I needed a tune-up and an oil change and that I would like them to look over the car and help me prioritize what I would need next (it's an older car). He described a process in which they would check the car over and let me know if the car needed anything else while it was in the shop. He made me a 7:30 a.m. appointment for one-and-a-half weeks out (he said they were very busy for that week). This morning I went in to drop off my car at 7:30 a.m. I was greeted by a man who started out by gruffly advising me that his Audi man had the day off. I suggested we re-schedule, he said no and insisted they could still get the job done. He asked about a "best number" so they could get hold of me and I stated that I would be waiting there until they had checked the car over so we could decide together what additional services (if any) they would be providing today. He very rudely pointed out that he already had 3 cars in the bay and that I would be waiting all day. I pointed out that I had made an appointment. He did not care. They do not honor their appointments. I left and called a different repair shop - I asked for a "ballpark estimate" for a tuneup on my Audi (they can be fairly expensive for all services) and was quoted a rate that was almost half the cost of Hunts. The lady made me an appointment and assured me that an appointment means my car will be pulled into the service bay at that time. I do not recommend Hunts. They are overpriced and have absolutely no customer service. read more

Hunt's has always taken good care of my vehicles and me. When I had a problem with another repair shop and filed a complaint with the NYS DMV, I had Hunt's properly complete the repair. Hunt's did a great job at a reasonable price. Hunt's mechanic even worked with the DMV inspector, putting my van on the lift and spending about an hour going over my claim. They didn't even charge me for this. I'll definitely go back to Hunt's. read more

Do NOT get your vehicle serviced at Hunt's auto service. BAD customer service, NOT honest! I brought my car there for repair because I had heard good things about them, and I severely regret having chosen Hunt's. First of all, their customer service was beyond awful. When I first dropped off the car, I was told they would call back with info and estimates on my repair later that day and never did. No big deal, I called the next day to verify. On the phone, They had no idea what repair I was even talking about but promised they would call back within the hour. As you might have guessed, they didn't. I personally went over to the store the next day, and the rep I spoke with (same one who I had spoken with before) was rude from the beginning. I asked him why I hadn't received a call back, he lied to my face and said he had never said he was going to call me within a day. Worse still, when I picked up my car, another component was then broken. It was working up until the car was taken to the shop. They would not take responsibility for it, but said they'd fix it for me for a mere $900. The only reason why I'm giving them 2 stars is because they at least did complete the repair they said they would, and that is working. But I will never take my car to Hunt's again and I will not recommend them to anyone I meet looking for service. read more

I trust these guys to fix my cars and only do what needs to be done to keep it safe and operating well. They have been completely honest with me in all our dealings. I rented an apartment from the owner at one point and found him to be fair and legitimately interested in doing the right thing. They're not cheap, and I can't give them five stars for the dollars they charge. But they treat their employees well too, so that's not easy for a business owner. This shop charged twice the rate they should have for an O2 sensor. Total should have been about $210 (this rate was confirmed by calling the shop back two months later and asking about the actual shop rate, diagnostic fee, etc.) but they charged me $400+. This was after I had an appt. and was turned away the day of service for another week. When I took it back, they sat on it for another day. Be warned: if you don't know much about cars, get a second opinion. If you need a diagnostic run on your vehicle, go to Auto Zone. They do it for free and you can do your research on pricing before you go anywhere. These guys are robber bandits, beware. read more

The only reason I don't go back sometimes is because it's a long wait to get in, and if its a vehicle emergency I don't like to wait, but thats how you know they have great service! Hunt's was thorough, pleasant and honest. They gave me all the results from the diagnostic tests they ran, they explained everything they checked and everything that needed fixing. Beware of this business! My son goes to college in Ithaca and we live over 4.5 hours away. His car is in excellent condition and had 60,000 miles on it. He broke down in Ithaca and was towed to Hunt's Auto Service. They told me the car needed an entire NEW Engine and would cost over $5,000 or a used engine can be installed for $3,000. They said they would "take the car off my hands" and salvage it for parts since the car was in excellent condition and had new tires and looked excellent. Not trusting them and not being born yesterday I wanted a second opinion and had the car towed to a nearby Chevrolet dealership with a service department and they fixed the problem for less than $50. I called Hunt's to tell them about it and they said they never "really" looked into the problem, but they did charge me for more than an hour of labor and tried to rip me off since I was 4.5 hours away! Don't trust this place and do not take your business here unless you want to be lied to, or have them rip off your kid who may go to college in Ithaca and doesn't know how to deal with scammers!
