Headed out to this restaraunt for a Sunday lunch for a birthday party. We were a party of 11 and no one had been here before. I was surprised at how large the inside of the restaraunt was. However, it was not very full given the size. It appeared to be a place where larger parties like to dine- very laid back and casual. We started off rough as we were seated for about 20 minutes before getting menus but the waitress quickly apologized and stated they are usually left on the table. She dropped off bread & our drinks to start. The menu has a lot of options (more than listed on their website). We ordered mozz squares, eggplant rollatini, calamari, chicken tenders & Bruschetta to start. Everything was very tasty- the eggplant was a little cold but the taste was still good and the portions were all very large. The bruschetta was actually the size of a pizza which caught us all off guard but there were tons of leftovers! For dinner I ordered the chicken picatta with spinach instead of pasta- the waitress was very accommodating for substitutes. It wasn't the best that I have ever had but it wasn't bad. The portions again- HUGE! We literally had about 12 togo boxes between all of us. The family had cheesecake for dessert so that we could sing happy birthday and everyone seemed to like it. For a group of 11 we were there for about 2 hours which seems normal- there was no rush and a very lax atmosphere to the place. I would likely go back- the bar looked like it had great potential but it was empty. Maybe happy hour is a little more enticing! read more

The Italian Pavilion has quickly become our family's go to stop on the drive back from NYC. The atmosphere is inviting and the food is amazing! I have only had the chicken parmigiana and penne a la vodka on multiple occasions and both dishes are delicious. Iconic valley location - been coming here since I was basically born. Love their scallops over pasta in a fra Diablo sauce, it's amazing. There garlic knots, clam strips, margarita bruschetta are all also very good. They will also accommodate group parties near the bar area if requested. Giving 3 stars because while they give large portions and some of their meals are great they are a bit high in price for the location. Was a reasonable place with good portions, but they are just overpriced now. Not worth it. There are too many places around with good Italian food with better prices. You won't believe what we paid for two dinners, a sandwich and salad. You can find better. Just don't do it. And I have never had a friendly experience there. I absolutely love the environment here. It's dark but not to dark and has a really mellow yet classy feel. Good food too. So I can only comment on the pizza because I never had anything else. It is very good, particularly the cheese. Nice size slices and pizza comes out fast. It is just a really nice place to kick back and grab a pie. I do wonder if they have any relation to the Italian Pavilion, formerly of Danbury where I also used to occasionally go. That place is now closed and has been for a good long time but as the environment seemed similar. I'd be curious to know. Will have to ask this place next time I go. But I digress! Hands down, this pizza is still one of the best pies in Connecticut. Plain cheese is all you need b/c the sauce and crust are so good you don't want to mask it with toppings. I've been by this place countless times, but never tried it until now. We came in as a Lg grp of 15ppl, we called ahead. I got a slice of chocolate cake, it was good. Everyone else got a variety of things. .too many ppl to say for sure. But some grinders, pizza, salads, etc. Everyone said it was all good. Service was good. Average at Best As we stood by the hostess stand waiting to be seated we could smell the Italian food in the air and felt this was going to be a great meal. Pictures of famous entertainers were hung everywhere and I was happy to be seated right below two of my favorite singers. Elvis and Bob Marley. The italian bread that the waitress brought to the table was delicious. Other than that, our night pretty much fell apart. The lighting is so bright, it feels like being in a hospital cafeteria. My wife asked for an espresso martini without the Baileys. It came with Baileys. I had an espresso with black sambuca. The espresso was very bitter even with the sambuca in it. I had the veal special. It was similar to a veal parmesan, but it had eggplant and spinach layered in between the two huge pieces of veal. Portion size was more than enough, but the taste was average at best. They should have chopped the spinach leaves into bite size pieces. It was a fight to cut through the long stringy spinach which also had no flavor. I would have sauteed the spinach with some fresh garlic and olive oil and then let it simmer in a splash of chicken stock before layering in between the veal. The sauce that was served on my veal and side of cavatelli was nothing to write home about. My wife had fettuccine alfredo with chicken and spinach. Even after loading it up with grated cheese, it still had no taste. This dish was very bland and had about as much flavor as the pasta water that the fettuccine was boiled in. All the praise and 5 star ratings that this restaurant received in the past just baffles me. I'd give them 4 stars for our waitress and 2 stars for our dinners. read more

Located near the entrance/exit of Route 8, this Derby Italian restaurant is cozier and more casual than its lofty name would imply. The decor is a bit strange for an Italian restaurant, with photographs of Hollywood and sports celebrities all over the place, and many of them clearly not Italian, but maybe they just wanted to do their own thing to set themselves apart from the rest. After all, you can stop your car at any block in New England and find something Greek/Italian/Polish. I had some chicken alfredo, while my girlfriend ordered a ricotta medium pizza and my mother-in-law opted for some fra diavolo oysters (?). Everyone liked the food and there was a lot of it left. I think you have to be quite hungry to consume everything is placed in front of you, but that's good because now you'll have leftovers for a repeat food encounter. The different types of bread they brought out before the entrees were also very tasty and the waitress was attentive and friendly. Also, if you haven't, try out the tasty tartufo for dessert. it's an ice cream dessert with fruit in the middle. Give the tiramisu a break and expand your taste buds experience, if you haven't done so before. The food was wonderful even when they were in the bowling alley but now they are often their own little restaurant I think they are not as good. I actually got takeout that made me sick one night. The Italian Pavilion is a mainstay in the Valley despite moving locations frequently - it started out as a little hole in wall in the ancient Ansonia Mall, moved to Valley Bowl when that place closed, then took over another building in the same lot when *that* place closed - and it's finally, in my eyes, starting to earn its reputation. The decor is very casual. The lighting is amber but not quite romantic, while the walls are covered with the pictures of famous popular culture figures in sports and entertainment. Seating is plentiful, for parties both large and small. Along the wall where the bar is are multiple large televisions where sporting events play. My issue here is that the TVs are on the large wall behind a divider, so you have to crane your neck if you want to watch anything from the main dining area. The ambiance is *overwhelmingly* Italian, which is a compliment; the whole restaurant just says "come in and sit down, you're among friends who will feed you until you burst". "Until you burst" is the key takeaway. Portions are very generous, so prepare to have leftovers. The prices can tend to match - partly due to portions, partly due to reputation - as they tend to be high for the Valley, but I have never seen anyone walk out of here in any condition other than "corpulent". The food is also very good, with a good sauce on most dishes, and particular raves on the soups and parmeseans. The pizza is OK - Italian with a softer crust - but not the best in the area. Service is fairly good. The hosts are outstanding, and the wait staff is fast, and courteous. For a place that's been around as long as this one, I'm surprised at the consistent quality in this department. Small mistakes are normal here, but these are the kind of things that are only noticed by people really paying attention and looking to nitpick. The good news is that once you're here, it's a great time. The bad news is getting here. The location is convenient - right off of Rt. 8, and in the beginning of the Division Street commerce hub - but the parking lot leading to the restaurant has fallen under years of neglect. The lot doesn't have potholes; they've graduated to "crater", and are working their way towards their sinkhole license. There is a very real, legitimate chance of damaging a car's undercarriage or suspension system in the lot, and it's not well lit at night, which makes things worse. The actual lot is fine; getting to that lot takes some skillful navigation. There is no pretension to the Italian Pavilion, which is why it's a place I like to eat and relax. Come in, eat, talk, laugh, and then enjoy your food coma; that's the name of the game here. read more
