I've never done the opening hour stampede, so I can't speak to that insanity, but I have been there when it's crowded, but also when it's chill. Persistence is key, doing some research on what you want before you go, and having a realistic budget in mind are all part of setting yourself up for success. In 2008, I got a $3000 couch for $800. They shipped it and delivered to my living room in NJ for about $100. She is still with me, going strong. There was a puppy pee accident about 5 years after purchase and R&B replaced the cushion insert for me at a very reasonable cost ($250?). [Insert loads of great finds over the years for me, friends, and family who I would shop for virtually and R&B would take payment over the phone.] Fast forward to yesterday, while back in MN for a visit, I popped over because the piece we wanted for our guest bedroom/office is delivering mid-Nov new, so I figured, why not check the outlet? LUCK! There she is, $1200 less than list, and if there is something wrong with her, I can't find it...even after an associate helped me move it around and look for issues. I'll probably drop back in today to see if there's any new stock on Sunday, just in case :)

This showroom for the home is open, bright and positively stunning. Roam is a store that won't please everybody, but it will please those with modern taste and a deep pocketbook. It would also be a good place to buy an interesting wedding gift if you have very posh friends. Between high-end imported furniture to... well, still very high-end local goods (Blu Dot), there's lots of room to browse here. I must admit that Roam doesn't quite roam into my budget or personal style. When the friendly owner (I think) began to explain some of the designers they carry, I wanted to stop her and say, "All my furniture is from craigslist, m'lady." I came in specifically to look at Joybird sofas as they are an authorized retailer and have sofas on the sales floor. Its scary to make an online purchase (and such a large, custom purchase) without touching and feeling an item, so I was thrilled to learn this store was so close to home and had what I was looking to purchase. I had a great time working with Kristin. After countless emails and a couple visits to the store I ordered my sofa, and also ended up with a chair and lamp. Kristin was great to offer her designer opinion while listening to mine and helping me make the big decision based on my existing home design. They offer financing (OAC) and 'white glove' delivery (they take all the packaging stuff with them when they leave, set the item in the room of your choosing) just like Joybird, but they will for other items you purchase there, too. The kicker is the 2 week in home trial period. Keep it for two weeks and if you decide you hate it they will take it back to the store and offer you store credit to replace the item. This really eased my worry about spending 2K on a sofa I may not like as much in person. I can't wait until it arrives! They also have home decor items here, like pillows and lamps. Its a super fun place to just look around and get inspiration, or fall in love with a custom fox lamp which would totally look amazing on your nightstand. Or maybe that fun mounted anatomical model of a heart on your desk. Or maybe that chair with acrylic arms. You get the idea... Inventory is changing constantly, so visit often. See you there!

My designer Billie was super sweet and let me browse but also let me know that anything can be custom ordered and that this is just a small sampling of what they can get for me. I wasn't sure if I could afford it so I had her price out a chair for me it was $1100 but they had a 20% off sale so it would be $880. I'm new to furniture shopshopping so I went to another store later (La-Z-Boy) and it was comparable to that. I walked in at 20 minutes to closing on a Sunday night, but Billie didn't seem rushed at all. I was the one saying "let's just wrap this up. Can you give me something to look at online?" And she gave me two websites she thought I would like based on our conversations and looking at what they have to offer. I also bought two vintages designer lights and a couple pieces of glass labware to put cocktails in and put on the rolling cart to roll around the house (see above). I also bought a very cool looking gumball machine where you push down a little lever and a gumball comes out.** **I have put real gumballs and M&M peanuts in this thing and it has yet to spit out a gumball. It's pretty cool, though. OK, these guys have vintage cocktail glasses and shakers (do you see a problem here?) and more labware that I might buy. And a couple great vintage stands from a chemistry lab that has lots of clamps for test tubes. I'm trying to justify this one. My god!! They have two gigantic overhead light fixtures on rolling frames. If you live in one of those hoity-toity warehouses there is no excuse not to buy these. O, VINYL RECORDS YOU PEOPLE. It's only open weekends but used to be just once a month. I ended up coming home with some cool little Swedish wash clothes, a set of new glasses with French words on them and a gorgeous2 tiered platter rack thingy. I also REALLY wanted to bring home a unique one of a kind French bar cabinet but not sure where to fit it into our new place yet. My first purchase was a coffee table Carter made with hexagonal mirrored tiles. From then I was hooked. My next purchase was a gorgeous mid-century liquor cabinet. I've purchased elegant fun gifts for friends at Omforme -- tell Carter about the recipient and he has always had a number of great suggestions. But my favorite part of Omforme is Carter's personal restyling of furniture. He carefully restores the original to beautiful condition, and then adds a bit of flavor to update it. I have also brought him some garage sale finds or family heirlooms, and each time he has transformed it from a boring old piece of furniture with "good bones" to something I love to see and use in my home.
