AWFUL. the install department is a joke. they have hidden fees for everything. soon as they showed to install a liner they were adding fees never mentioned prior to arrival. they wanted 300 dollars to drain and extra couple of puddles out of the pool and 100 for working around the deck. Hidden Fees and Poor Communication When I bought the pool, I was told installation was included. I was informed I'd need to purchase sand separately, and that the installer would let me know how much to buy. I was also told there would be a $50 per inch charge for any dirt that needed to be removed--which I understood and expected. What I was not told at any point was that there would be an extra $150 charge to install the filter or any of the equipment needed to actually run the pool. After waiting three weeks for the installer to arrive, I was shocked to be hit with this additional fee on the spot. When I called the main office, they suggested the package I bought may have included equipment installation, and told me to go back to the store. When I did, the store staff insisted that it was not included and that I had to pay extra--offering nothing more than a simple "sorry" and saying it's just "two hoses" connected to the pool. If it's that simple, why wasn't it included or at least disclosed clearly upfront? This whole experience felt misleading and unprofessional. I wouldn't recommend buying a pool from here unless you get everything in writing and ask a ton of questions first. read more

Great prices on watered down chemicals. Not the same strength as normal priced pool supplies

I've been a long-time customer of Island Recreation, bringing my pool water samples in for years -- but I've finally had enough. Every single time I go there, I get a completely different answer from each employee about what chemicals or adjustments I need. It's like nobody there is on the same page or has any real training. I've tried to stay loyal, but the lack of consistency and customer service has become ridiculous. My breaking point was a recent purchase of a Black & Decker 1500 GPH pool cover pump. The first one I bought didn't work -- it wouldn't pump water at all. When I brought it back to the store, I was told they don't give refunds, only replacements. I didn't want another one, but I had no choice. So I exchanged it for the exact same model, took it home, and guess what? That one doesn't work either. The pump won't even start unless there's more than five inches of standing water on the pool cover. By that point, the cover is sagging and overloaded -- which completely defeats the purpose of owning a pump in the first place. I went back for help, and all I got was attitude and finger-pointing. No accountability, no offer to make things right, just "that's our policy." Their idea of customer service is to tell you to buy something else and hope it works. At this point, I'm done wasting my time and money here. I'll take the loss and go to Home Depot or a reputable pool supply company that actually stands behind what they sell. Island Recreation has gone downhill -- inconsistent advice, unhelpful staff, and no sense of responsibility. If you value your money, your time, and your sanity -- shop somewhere else. read more

We have been IR Customers since COVID, when Gwen helped my daughter purchase her dream pool. We live less than 2 miles from the Deer Park location but always travel to Medford to shop, and visit Gwen who always keeps in contact with my daughter. That store always seemed to better organized and well stocked. Recently I needed an O-Ring for my filter so I just ran to DP Location...was sold the wrong one, went back to exchange it an hour later and was told by "Joe" I was wrong.... it was the "Right one" I have never been treated in such a RUDE, and condescending manner. I will continue to drive 35-40 mins to Medford who gave me correct one and to be treated the way a customer should be to avoid ever having ti deal with such a poor representative of a Company that has made ALL my daughters purchases a pleasure. read more

They don't deserve one star. They screwed up the install and had to take it down and do it again. Didn't deliver all the parts for the top. Took months to get. Even claimed they didn't come with the pool. They did. Bought the best liner. Now less than 2 years the seam is separating. Impossible to get someone to talk about the warranty. Store says they dont handle it. They give you a way to do it on the cell phone. They say they will get back to you in 7 to 21 days. Doesn't happen. I asked for the corporate number. So I'm not sure why the reviews are of such low opinions for this store, when you have or buy a pool you have to be prepared for maintenance costs and unforeseen fixes, it comes with the territory. What I love about IR is that they opened a water testing center which quickly tests your pool water. It prints out a diagnosis and the employee assisting you walks you through your report and helps you stock up on the exact materials you need to maintain a normal level of water. Once you get your water tested, they give you a little receipt and they will write a code on it if they are any special sales, make sure you tell the young staff at the register to type the codes into the system so the sale prices go through otherwise you will be shocked at the register. read more

3rd time this season. Each time I go to purchse something, the coupon has tiny fine print. Today it was chlorine. 50 lbs for $100. Fine print says the price includes a $30 "splash back" card. In essence they charged $79 for this (probably with tax). Then I get a discout card for next month. Cashiers are not very knowledgable on sales. There is a bunch more but I won't go into every detail. They have lost me as a customer. read more

Island WRECK is terrible! If I can give it 0 stars I would! From buying a heater which only lasted a year and they blamed us for it breaking! then getting a liner which they had to come back 3 times! First time they installed with a big old hole in it, second time they never cut a hole for the skimmer basket, finally third time they got it right, but also proceeded to step in dog poop and wipe it off with paper towels and throw them all in front of my house like animals! Customer service sucks, i've emailed and emailed and no one ever gets back to you! I honestly don't even know how they are still in business, but they definitely won't be getting my business ever again! multiple changes and multiple failures by them! don't waste your money! Prices are great and if you are going in to refresh your stock of shock and chlorine then there's no place better. Unfortunately the customer service leaves ALOT to be desired. I worked with a sales associate to purchase an electric pool heater (about $3600) and I was assured that I can put it in my garage. We scheduled a site visit, a delivery date and an installation date. Site visit went without a hitch and I got paperwork saying the location I want to install it in is good. Unit got delivered without a problem. On the day of installation, after TWO separate parties gave the OK, I'm told the location I want the heater isn't going to work and it needs to be outside. Unfortunately that wasn't going to work so we started the return process, but you can't call the store directly to do it. At this point I'm peeved but if it's part of the process then I'm ok with following it. Went into the store and worked with a sales associate to start processing the return which required scheduling a pickup with their third party delivery service. I was told there would be a restocking fee and a pickup fee (about $250 in total) that I'd have to pay to process the return after the unit is picked up. Sales associate said that I'd get a call a day before the pickup date, fine. I received no call, and nobody came to pick it up Needless to say I was beginning to lose my patience. At this point its been a little over a month since I bought the unit, had it delivered, got denied the install and tried to start the return. I call the customer service number for the store and find out there's nothing they can do for me. All they can do is pass along a message to the store for a manager to call me. Surprise surprise, I receive no call again. I call customer service a second time, frustration starting to boil, to ask if I can talk to either someone from the store or someone from the delivery department. Apparently there are no direct numbers to any of the relevant departments so I'm completely at Island Rec's mercy. After calling for a THIRD time the next day I finally get a call back from a manager and he informs me that not only will I have to pay for the restocking and pickup fee, I'll have to pay the initial delivery fee of $179. THIS is where I drew the line. So after two separate parties tell me I can install this unit where I want to, I have to pay over $400 dollars to give it back. The 'manager', who refused to provide me his name, had the GALL to tell me "there's just nothing I can do, that's our third party's fee and that money would come out of the stores pockets so we have to charge you". Moral of the story, don't trust a word of what their sales associates tell you because if they're wrong then you have to pay for it. If you make a bigger purchase get EVERYTHING in writing, including who you worked with because you will get screwed. But yeah, they get two stars because their stuff is more affordable. read more

I came in on president's day and bought some tabs using my gift card.I came in July 4 week to pick up some chemicals and googles for the kids and gave the register lady my gift card and she kept scanning and said there was nothing left. So I paid with a creditcard and left. But I knew something wasn't right. I happen to be one of those people who keeps all his receipt. When I looked at my last receipt I called customer service right away and they said to bring in everything next time and they would fix it. So when I came in late July with every single receipt from this store, they went into a room and 10 minutes later they came out and determined I used the card without using my vip, which is impossible because they ask for your email every time you check out at the register. I don't like when people try to insult your intelligence and call me a liar, so I called the police. When they came they determined that it's only a civil matter and they couldn't help but felt bad for us. island rec knows how to play it because even if I win in court, I probably wouldn't spend the same amount in what they took from me which is 214.05. Felt like I was in a communist country and your word can't match their word.Hopeless feeling. stay away from them no matter if they have cheap chemicals. Eventually it will catch up to them. read more

I purchased a new pool from them. I went to the warehouse a few days later to pick it up. When I started going thru the boxes preparing for the installation I noticed I was missing all the hard ware. (The nuts and bolts) Even the directions were missing.?? I called up customer service asked if I can return the box or just come pick up the missing pieces. The customer service told me she can't help me,I said because I opened the box?? How else would I be able to assemble the pool if I didn't open it she said I should of opened all the boxes and went thru all the pieces before I signed for it..you gotta be kidding me..i now have a 1000 dollar paper weight in my yard and they don't even answer my calls anymore. read more

When I spoke to on the phone part of the sales team, he was wonderful then I went to store and Anthony helped us. He was professional, knowledgeable, and very helpful at this point I would've given the company a five star rating until the installation the first guy came looked at the site told us that it was perfectly leveled and we wouldn't need anything. Then we received an email to purchase just in case and we did when the installation came that's when the trouble started. They were rude and obnoxious demanding and extra $400. For installation when I told them, my husband would be home in 10 minutes to discuss it with them. They left and said they were coming back and didn't show back till 730 that night. It was too late for them to install. They came back the next day they installed, but still demanded the $400. The company needs to do something about these guys. Spoke to a friend last had the same experience last year with the same guys and so did her friends they shook them down for $400 each think about this before you get a pool from this company. Everything was perfect until the installers they need to hire new people very disappointed and would not recommend buying a pool here. read more
