This review is just based on their Chinese chicken salad. We've gotten it twice, at the catering size. It's pretty simple -- shredded chicken, lettuce, and some type of chips. The clincher is their dressing. It makes the whole salad amazing. Their menu says to give a couple of days notice for catering orders but we were able to get a large one tonight with just 10 minute notice. Worth a shot if you need to feed a big crew. read more

My husband and I stopped here on 9/18 around 7:45 p.m. We placed our order and waited for it to be ready. When we were told our food was ready, we were surprised to find that it had been packed in to-go containers because the restaurant was closing at 8:00 p.m. We had expected to sit down and enjoy our meal in the restaurant. We understand that it was close to closing time, but it would have been helpful--and much more considerate--if someone had told us when we placed our order that dine-in service was no longer available. We could then have decided whether we wanted to order at all. What was most disappointing, however, was the attitude of the employees on duty. Unfortunately, the way the situation was handled left us with a very negative impression of the restaurant and its customer service. We won't be returning, and we'll be sure to share our experience with friends who may be considering dining here. I heard that this place had great portions that were tasty and inexpensive. I would say the food is really filling for sure. I don't know if all of it is tasty though. I ordered the beef and chicken combos (teriyaki), they are plated with a bed of rice and chicken sesame salad. The salad was similar to Rascal's but is missing tangerines, either way it was good and fresh - you can tell they prep it right before giving it to you since the wontons and lettuce is still crisp. The meats... I wish they didn't marinate the beef so early, it tastes really salty! It reminds me of when I left beef marinating for over a day, it's too much. Island Hut is a Hawaiian spot in Lomita where you can get your fix when you're craving some Hawaiian food. I've been here twice now. I honestly don't remember exactly what I ordered on my first visit, but I do remember leaving without any complaints. On my second visit, I ordered the Special Loco Moco. Presentation-wise, it looked really good and definitely got me excited to dig in. Unfortunately, after my first few bites, I noticed something that stood out to me after trying loco moco from different places, including in Hawaii. The beef patty tasted more like a frozen, pre-made patty rather than something freshly made in-house. The gravy and eggs were okay, but the overall dish was missing some seasoning for me. This was actually one of the few times I felt like I needed to add condiments to a loco moco. I ended up adding a little shoyu just to bring in some extra salt and flavor that I felt was missing from both the patty and gravy. The mac salad also wasn't really hitting for me. That may just come down to personal preference since I'm used to a certain texture and style from places I've tried in Hawaii and other Hawaiian restaurants. The chicken Chinese salad, though, was great! That was easily one of the highlights of the meal. The staff was helpful and friendly, which definitely made the experience better. The restaurant itself has enough tables for a casual dine-in meal, but I probably wouldn't recommend it for a really large group. The parking lot is also pretty small, with only a limited number of spaces available. Would I come back? Probably. My first experience was good and there are still other things on the menu I'd be willing to try. The burger patty was juicy and flavorful, the gravy was rich and savory, and the egg on top tied everything together perfectly. The plate has lots of rice and beef teriyaki which looks like beef jerky overcooked and dry, the California roll looked horrible with too much rice inside and badly rolled. I ordered the chicken katsu curry plate ($18.90, plus tax of $1.98) for the first time, today. Potatoes and carrots are in curry gravy, served over rice and chicken katsu. I suspect that the vegetables were pre-cooked, then set aside until needed. (Some of the smaller vegetable pieces had a constant temperature throughout; some of the larger potato chunks were cooler in the center than the exterior.) But that's ok, because the vegetables weren't overcooked and had an "al dente" texture. The white rice and vegetables have a neutral taste. The curry had just the right amount of salt and spice to add flavor to these elements without being "too much". The meal also came with a small salad. This was unexpected. But the side salad provided a palate cleanser in between bites of curry. In my younger years, I would have finished the whole plate. Nowadays, I eat until no longer hungry. All of this is to say that the serving size is more than adequate. read more

Decided to finally try the place I frequently pass by throughout the week! Stepping in the staff were welcoming and willing to express what their popular dishes are as a first timer. I ended up choosing the teriyaki steak and chicken combination plate. It comes with chicken salad and Mac salad. I HATED the Mac salad - I didn't like the texture or the flavor. I'm not sure what it was supposed to taste like but it wasn't seasoned and the creamy taste was not enjoyable either. The chicken salad on the other hand was delicious and they provided a good amount to accompany the proteins. The steak and chicken were super flavorful and also tender. Much better than L&L or the chain Ono restaurant (which I think should change its name to NoNo). Island Hut has a nice variety of options and I've never had anything I've been disappointed with in the 4 or 5 previous visits. I really enjoy their Tonkatsu (pork cutlet) curry plate. The curry is much better than I've found at some other local Hawaiian restaurants. The portion was quite large as well. What amused me was the size of the chunks of carrots. Really BIG. Enough to make any screwy wabbit happy : ) The parking lot is rather smallish and the day my wife and I went to meet some friends, a large group of Sheriffs had gathered to eat. I was very happy to have a huge portion of salad. Both the Chinese chicken salad and cabbage salad were delicious, not over dressed, with a good amount of chicken and crunchy wonton chips. The Katsu donburi was flavorful and a hearty portion, served over rice. The juice from the donburi dressed the rice and the combination was perfect. My husband got the kaarage chicken plate which was also huge. The karaage was good, made with dark meat, but a little dry. They gave us a Katsu sauce to dip it in which was a little better but I personally liked the Katsu donburi better. My mother-in-law got the salmon salad and asked for no rice. They said they couldn't do any substitutions for the rice but I think they just gave her extra salad instead. Everything was really good and I'm very happy I stumbled on this place. I ordered a chicken teriyaki special and a chicken katsu plate. The food is very fantastic! The Chinese chicken salad and the macaroni salad are very tasty.
