I have been to Hawaii. A friend of mine won a give away by stuffing a ballot box at a grocery store, and then he gave me the plus one ticket. Was it a trip gotten via ill ways? Back then I did not think of that. And now that I do, I say the breeze of Hawaii would help anyone understand that what he did was a youth Indiscretion, like going for a swim in the cloak of darkness while only wearing a lei. Going to Back Home in Lahaina was not a trip back to the Big Island, I won't say that, but it was a moment of joy inspired heavily by a Hawaiian decor that both bordered on the tragically kitsch and the whimsically fun depending on where you stood or sat. But the true treasure of this Hawaiian micro-isle is their fare-- no doubt about that. After the meal my friend Conrad and I went to the front of the house, where they have the to go section. This is where the kitsch became most circus-y. Although, I did not clip everyhing, I did clip a make your own lei kit, hawaiian stickers, and other things that make the place feel like a tourist trap for Hawaiian hopefuls. For me, the tawdry lessened the impact of the Aloha I heard from the dining room. In sharp contrast, the main dining room had this mural of a whale coming out of deep blue water with Hawaiian florals on the edge of the land that was more transportive to the land where coconuts fall from palm trees and hula skirts are a must for every closet. The main room dining room also had these string lights and sphere paper lamps that made me feel like I was eating at a night market where I could see the stars of a Hawaiian skiy but it was both day time, and there was a roof above me. The food was the situation that needs to be address though, with great respect and admiration because almost every bite was supremely good. My friend Conrad and I first shared a Lahaina Platter- basically their appetizer platter or to be Hawaiian their pupu platter, and please do not go for the easy joke it is not that funny and really kind of base and gross, if the wrong person is making it. The must of the spot, unsurprisingly, is their Lahaina fried chicken. The chicken was crispy, flavorful, and kind of like karage chicken but different with the spices and flavors and ocean fronts of Hawaii. I know I did not make sense but I gotta believe that Hawaiian culture made the dish great and Hawaiian culture is partly define by waterfront property. My favorite things from the dish were the Lumpia which are often described as Filipino eggrolls. The pork meat was flavorful, the paper wrapping was on point, like wonderfully thin yet still structurally strong, not crispy, more firm with crisp. The Cinderella story of the day was the spam musubi. The saltiness of the seaweed was present but not in an overblown way, the sweetness of their teriyaki sauce carried savory notes that uplifted the sweet notes, in a wonderful way, their sticky rice was textbook fluffy and fabulous. Overall, I would nitpick flaws. And for this review I do not feel like finding the wrong cracks on a whole coconut skin. My main dish was their bbq grilled chicken plate. I could not finish everything at the restaurant. I had cold left overs at home and they hit the spot in this way that really earned my respect, because cold left overs still holding strong that is like seeing a shooting star while you enoy Mai Tais in a white beach---- living the improbable dream. What was best out of the bunch was their Lahaina chicken. And again, even though the fried goodness had withdrawn, the flavor and textured that remained was still, in a way, intact and in some ways optimal. I just shivered admitting that. I was happy with the food overall, and want to communicate that it was a strong showing for a place that sits within a strip mall. Do not just a shore by the lack of its crashing wave sounds. I also love the name of this place. Like I went back to Lahaina, has personality. Like it is a name that drips from the tongue even though it is long. Pluis, saying multiple times in a conversation makes the place feel important. Conrad had some cheesecake with jello and he loved it. I did not try it, but it was unique and I did not think such a dessert existed. The crust was walnut, I would have thought it would be Macadamia. I definetetly love this place and want to back again soon! read more

Decided to have Hawaiian food and try a new place but maybe I should've stuck with soemthing familiar? The friendly staff and the amazing interior was so welcoming alongside the well priced drinks with all different games on each TV made this place feel amazing. Once I started off with the spam musubi, I was surprised by how it was bland and un flavorful it was. Even though it had sauce on top it tasted like I just had rice with meat as it was lacking the seasoning. Our entrees arrived, which looked phenomenal, but was then again hit with blandness even though it was smothered in sauce. The burger was bland and the Mac salad tasted like mush. Maybe some changes to the sauce and adding more seasoning may help these amazing looking dishes as I wanted to enjoy them but sadly couldn't. read more

When I'm in the area and/or crave Hawaiian food, THIS my go to. Consistently good. My wife is from Carson and we've been coming here for two decades plus. The kalbi ribs and their staple ( to me anyway) Lahaina fried chicken ( both tender and well marinated) cannot be touched anywhere with a 100 mile radius. Pro tip: get the fried rice with your plate ( Portuguese sausage is our preference) - add Ahi Poke and fried wonton ( chef's kiss). On Friday nights, have a beer, enjoy the live band, and dance of some calories. I've tried them all in the South Bay and when you consider portion size, food quality, service, and ambiance this place is hard to beat. read more

It comes with three sides usually comes with rice Mac salad or you can substitute for a Chinese chicken salad, which is what I did and a side of fries this plate was awesome, but the dressing that comes with it is a little too powerful kind of like that wasabi mustard type of dressing I'm pretty sure they have other options but next time I'll know my friend ordered one of their combo plates, which was also huge massive portions with the meat, a wonton soup and the appetizer sampler. I visited Back Home in Lahaina last Friday. I called to check if they have Poke Nachos, once they said yes I was excited and placed my order for pick up. Once I got to my car I opened up my container and I was disappointed. This was not poke nachos it was more so poke with a side of chips. To start, you need to get the coconut haupia cheesecake. I do not like cheesecake, but this was the lightest, freshest, most wonderful dessert I ordered in 2025. I ordered just the plain haupia pudding, which I was eating outside. One of the guests told me I needed to try the cheesecake, and ended up buying me a slice when he went in to order his food. I am so so thankful for that man because it was really really delicious and I will definitely be back. This place is absolutely amazing. I got a takeout plate and some desserts, but I am so eager to come back to try more of the menu. I got the combo plate with beef, kahlua pork, and chicken katsu. We also sampled some of their shortbread cookies with chocolate chips, which were good, but the cheesecakes are really what we'd come back for--especially the Haupia cheesecake. That's the one item we'd 100% repurchase. For the main dish, I ordered the fried chicken plate, which came with rice, mac salad, and a side salad. The fried chicken itself was very good--nicely seasoned with a subtle sweetness that worked well. Unfortunately, the sides didn't live up to the chicken. The mac salad, which is usually one of my favorites, was lacking flavor, and the salad was very simple--just cabbage tossed with sesame oil and sesame seeds. Overall, the food was hit or miss. The place is still packed and it is a favorite among large groups. Birthday parties are always celebrated here bc it's fun, service is great and food is generous. This is one of our favorite Hawaiian spots! It's great for large groups and to take family and friends. It really does taste like being back in Hawaii. I love the decor around the restaurant. It's like you're eating on the beach. Also, all the prices are super affordable and the portions are huge! My favorite thing to get there is the Simin soup, it's super flavorful and filled with noodles, meat, fish cake ans much more. This is a very hole in the wall type place, most resemblance to what you'd actually get in hawaii which I love. Every dish that came out was massive in portion size and would definitely have been enough for two people to share. The noodles in the fried saimin were a little bit overcooked, but the Hawaiian bbq chicken made up for it. It was perfectly tender and had great flavor. While I appreciate the value, the choices I selected were okay. My Loco Moco was ordered with an over easy egg that came out over hard. Nothing stellar to report on the flavor profiles of the Fried Saimin and Kalua Pork as they were all very one dimensional. Service: The restaurant was at about 75% capacity when we got there and despite our party being on the larger side right in the middle of the room, they kind of forgot about us for long periods of time. I spent a good amount of my lunch service thirsty trying to get my beverage refilled. Ambiance: There is a rustic Hawaiian theme with the glazed wooden tables and art on the walls. My daughter suggested we try this place. My wife was pointing on the mural on the wall, which was from a street we visited when we were in LaHaina a few years ago. She knew exactly where it was. Now that's interesting ambiance. You also have the street signs on the various support posts of the roads in LaHaina. And more murals. We dropped in on our first night in the area. For a Tuesday night, we got seated promptly, and the place was pretty quiet. Our server came out and took our drink orders, and then came and got our dinner orders. I ordered their Seared Ahi Tuna plate, which had cabbage, the sashimi grade Ahi tuna, a very nice sesame wasabi sauce for dipping the Ahi in, and white rice. My wife's dish was Hawaiian Chicken and Teriyaki Steak with extra teriyaki sauce. She also ordered their Lomi Lomi Salmon salad. She really enjoyed her dinner. She ordered a glass of tea, and I went for a 16 ounce glass of their Longboard Beer. All in all the food was plentiful and tasty. Service was solid. Parking is available just past the business, but make sure you park in the general parking, not the chiropractor's lot. There are signs - don't do it. I really wanted to try one of the cheesecakes or other desserts but since we were heading to a sporting event next, there was no way we could eat all this food or store the desserts without them melting or going bad. Whenever we are here next for another sporting event, we plan on stopping by to try other items on the menu. We had never seen any restaurant use wonton skins as "chips" so it was most definitely a first for us. After ordering the Hawaiian Nachos, the fried wonton skins were just too oily for me. There was a visible layer of oil on each chip, very shiny. The Grilled Chicken Teriyaki Dark was delicious, but I also wished there was veggie or some macaroni salad included. The rice was cooked perfectly and the chicken was tender, but the bowl just lacked a bit of variety. The portions for our food were great. One does not see prices like these anywhere these days. Very affordable and lots of variety on the menu. There are tables in the courtyard where one can also enjoy their food. They also have a catering menu if one needs to order for large gatherings. The Fried Chicken was room temperature at best, but the flavor was decent. The Chicken Breast was just grilled chicken with sauce drizzled on top. The Hawaiian BBQ Beef was good. The teriyaki sauce served here tastes a little strange compared to other restaurants. The ramen cabbage salad was interesting as well. I'd never had noodles mixed into my salad before. The service was outstanding. Shout out to those that work here. They were very attentive and on top of it.
