Everything tasted fresh, flavorful, and like somebody in the kitchen actually cares about what they're putting on the plate. You definitely get your money's worth here. With our frequent visits, we were given loyalty stamp cards that earned 3 free rewards after reaching a designated tier: beverage, appetizer, & entrée (usually redeem the Lahaina Fried Chicken Entree) or t-shirt. In the early 2010s, we changed our dining time to their "Kids Eat Free on Wednesdays" after H turned toddler, & brought our friends with kids too. While the longstanding promo is no longer active, they occasionally run holiday or event-based kids eat free specials. Their Keiki (kid's meal) Menu includes: main entrée, side, drink, & dessert... it's a great value for the amount of food! I first learned about Back Home in Lahaina from my bank supervisor who lives in the South Bay. Her family loves the authentic Hawaiian comfort foods, particularly the addicting Lahaina Fried Chicken. It's famous for their slightly sweet, light & crunchy chicken. I love adding a splash of NOH Hawaiian Hot Sauce for a l'il heat! There's 2 specials (Beef Stew Curry, Fish & Chips) that I often order when I see it on the menu. And I always order the curry... love the Japanese-inspired curry roux base with mild heat! Usually posted in the late fall & winter, it's the perfect comfort food to counter the chill! When my husband is hungrier than norm, he'll either add an order of Hawaiian Nachos (they use wonton skins as chips instead of tortillas), or replace the entrée with the Back Home Sampler, which has a bit of everything. We've ordered maybe 1/2 of the menu over the years? Sticking to our favs, & adding other items when we're dining with guests. Their entrées are large enough to share between 2 people, & have been doing so in later years whereas I was hangry enough to eat the whole plate on my own. If you still have room for dessert, Haupia or Jello Cheesecakes are both delish to end your meal. I like the former; it's creamy yet light with a delicate, rich coconut filling. The kiddos love the latter for the strawberry jello that adds a sweet bouncy punch of flavor to the tangy cheesecake. The 1st decade's food & service was excellent, & we dined in so much that we knew most of the servers & can ask for "our usual" before we are seated. The timing is almost seamless from entry to our order to paying our check. Our servers were detailed-oriented to make sure everything is in place after serving our food (extra plates & napkins, necessary condiments), refilling our water with no/little prompts, & bringing our check quickly with necessary boxes when there's leftovers. However, the 2nd decade had its ups & down, especially during the pandemic lockdown (the once spacious dining room was awkward & warm with the plexiglass partitions). Gone are our fav servers, loyalty stamp card, & "Kids Eat Free on Wednesdays." What really kept us from returning often is the lack of consistency in food & service. If we're taking an early dinner around 5:30 PM, sometimes we have to wait awhile because there's no host(ess) at the counter. There may be times when we're seated & there's no server around, or I'm waving the menu to catch their eye. Then there's order execution issues: waiting period from our order to expedition time, not everything is served the relatively the same time, food quality (partly raw chicken, stale wonton chips, overcooked chicken tenders, etc.) & quantity (seems like there's a less?) issues. It's common enough to be a deterrent for frequent repeat visits. But when they're on point, it's the best bang for your buck value for a delish Hawaiian meal! Catered order review- Placed a last minute order and they were 100% accommodating. Service was outstanding with follow up calls. At the last minute we had to cancel and the restaurant was 100% understanding. We had no issues with canceling. Two months later, we were able to rebook. Ordering was easy using the online catering form to decide what we wanted. When we had questions about portion & how much was needed, suggestions were provided. To start, you need to get the coconut haupia cheesecake. I do not like cheesecake, but this was the lightest, freshest, most wonderful dessert I ordered in 2025. I have been to Hawaii. A friend of mine won a give away by stuffing a ballot box at a grocery store, and then he gave me the plus one ticket. Was it a trip gotten via ill ways? Back then I did not think of that. And now that I do, I say the breeze of Hawaii would help anyone understand that what he did was a youth Indiscretion, like going for a swim in the cloak of darkness while only wearing a lei. Going to Back Home in Lahaina was not a trip back to the Big Island, I won't say that, but it was a moment of joy inspired heavily by a Hawaiian decor that both bordered on the tragically kitsch and the whimsically fun depending on where you stood or sat. But the true treasure of this Hawaiian micro-isle is their fare-- no doubt about that. After the meal my friend Conrad and I went to the front of the house, where they have the to go section. This is where the kitsch became most circus-y. Although, I did not clip everyhing, I did clip a make your own lei kit, hawaiian stickers, and other things that make the place feel like a tourist trap for Hawaiian hopefuls. For me, the tawdry lessened the impact of the Aloha I heard from the dining room. In sharp contrast, the main dining room had this mural of a whale coming out of deep blue water with Hawaiian florals on the edge of the land that was more transportive to the land where coconuts fall from palm trees and hula skirts are a must for every closet. The main room dining room also had these string lights and sphere paper lamps that made me feel like I was eating at a night market where I could see the stars of a Hawaiian skiy but it was both day time, and there was a roof above me. The food was the situation that needs to be address though, with great respect and admiration because almost every bite was supremely good. My friend Conrad and I first shared a Lahaina Platter- basically their appetizer platter or to be Hawaiian their pupu platter, and please do not go for the easy joke it is not that funny and really kind of base and gross, if the wrong person is making it. The must of the spot, unsurprisingly, is their Lahaina fried chicken. The chicken was crispy, flavorful, and kind of like karage chicken but different with the spices and flavors and ocean fronts of Hawaii. I know I did not make sense but I gotta believe that Hawaiian culture made the dish great and Hawaiian culture is partly define by waterfront property. My favorite things from the dish were the Lumpia which are often described as Filipino eggrolls. The pork meat was flavorful, the paper wrapping was on point, like wonderfully thin yet still structurally strong, not crispy, more firm with crisp. The Cinderella story of the day was the spam musubi. The saltiness of the seaweed was present but not in an overblown way, the sweetness of their teriyaki sauce carried savory notes that uplifted the sweet notes, in a wonderful way, their sticky rice was textbook fluffy and fabulous. Overall, I would nitpick flaws. And for this review I do not feel like finding the wrong cracks on a whole coconut skin. My main dish was their bbq grilled chicken plate. I could not finish everything at the restaurant. I had cold left overs at home and they hit the spot in this way that really earned my respect, because cold left overs still holding strong that is like seeing a shooting star while you enoy Mai Tais in a white beach---- living the improbable dream. What was best out of the bunch was their Lahaina chicken. And again, even though the fried goodness had withdrawn, the flavor and textured that remained was still, in a way, intact and in some ways optimal. I just shivered admitting that. I was happy with the food overall, and want to communicate that it was a strong showing for a place that sits within a strip mall. Do not just a shore by the lack of its crashing wave sounds. I also love the name of this place. Like I went back to Lahaina, has personality. Like it is a name that drips from the tongue even though it is long. Pluis, saying multiple times in a conversation makes the place feel important. Conrad had some cheesecake with jello and he loved it. I did not try it, but it was unique and I did not think such a dessert existed. The crust was walnut, I would have thought it would be Macadamia. The friendly staff and the amazing interior was so welcoming alongside the well priced drinks with all different games on each TV made this place feel amazing. Once I started off with the spam musubi, I was surprised by how it was bland and un flavorful it was. Even though it had sauce on top it tasted like I just had rice with meat as it was lacking the seasoning. Once I got to my car I opened up my container and I was disappointed. This was not poke nachos it was more so poke with a side of chips. This was my second time at Back Home in Lahaina. I don't like to write negative reviews but I just want to set expectations for people going. The won tons in the won ton saimin are not good at all. They are hard and the meat just tastes weird. Just get the regular saimin, not the Big Bruddah version. I ordered something small, the ahi poke appetizer that came with won ton chips. I'm sorry, but the poke was terrible. The fish felt apart and dissolved in your mouth. I think it was either over mixed, or marinated too long where it broke down the fish itself. I couldn't even eat most of it. Such a waste. The service is always really good and the people are really nice. This is one of our favorite Hawaiian spots! It's great for large groups and to take family and friends. It really does taste like being back in Hawaii. I love the decor around the restaurant. It's like you're eating on the beach. Also, all the prices are super affordable and the portions are huge! My favorite thing to get there is the Simin soup, it's super flavorful and filled with noodles, meat, fish cake ans much more. We also sampled some of their shortbread cookies with chocolate chips, which were good, but the cheesecakes are really what we'd come back for--especially the Haupia cheesecake. That's the one item we'd 100% repurchase. For the main dish, I ordered the fried chicken plate, which came with rice, mac salad, and a side salad. The fried chicken itself was very good--nicely seasoned with a subtle sweetness that worked well. Unfortunately, the sides didn't live up to the chicken. The mac salad, which is usually one of my favorites, was lacking flavor, and the salad was very simple--just cabbage tossed with sesame oil and sesame seeds. Overall, the food was hit or miss. It is all indoor seating and the restaurant feels very bright and open with lots of windows and fun decor. They have a fairly large selection on their menu and everything is very fairly priced. They were out of a couple of items the day that we were there but they were kind enough to offer substitutions for the things that they didn't have. Every dish that came out was massive in portion size and would definitely have been enough for two people to share. The noodles in the fried saimin were a little bit overcooked, but the Hawaiian bbq chicken made up for it. It was perfectly tender and had great flavor. The gravy was a little more on the viscous side and the Mac was heavy on the Mayo. Service: The restaurant was at about 75% capacity when we got there and despite our party being on the larger side right in the middle of the room, they kind of forgot about us for long periods of time. I spent a good amount of my lunch service thirsty trying to get my beverage refilled. Ambiance: There is a rustic Hawaiian theme with the glazed wooden tables and art on the walls. The vibe is on point and the plentiful seating in doors means it gets pretty loud. There is fairly limited parking on site. Had tried this restaurant many years ago, so wanted to see how their food was. Service was excellent, they also serve draft beer and wine. We started with a POG mimosa, which was very good. We shared a Filipino lumpia appetizer, which was only okay. My wife ordered the Lahaina fried chicken plate and I wanted to try their lau lau platter. The fried chicken was very good, tender on the inside a d flavorful. I was a bit disappointed with the lau lau. The meat seemed on the dry side and didn't have as much meat as other Hawaiian restaurants. read more
