As an alumnus of the Rhode Island School of Design, owner Andrew Mau clearly has a keen eye for stylish design, and it manifests itself into an impressive variety of goods. Jamie W and I were waiting for our reservation at The Pig and The Lady (review: https://yelp.to/LhZdZcHz26), so we had time to explore the Kaimuki neighborhood. Beyond the necessary malasada at Pipeline Bakery (review: https://yelp.to/coxyVLI5P8), we were curious about a couple of LGBTQ-owned businesses on Waialae Avenue. One was a fun pet supply emporium, The Public Pet (review: https://yelp.to/XXvGoRe97Q), and this was the other store. There were plenty of things to browse. Clothing and accessories appeared to dominate the main hallway, while housewares, handbag, and fabrics were presented in the back area. There were unique items like colorful hair clips, duck-head umbrellas, and tins of mackerel filets. This store has some of the most interesting products! It may look like it caters more to women, but there are some things that appeal to both sexes. I was looking for sunglasses and I read that Hula Eyewear could be found here. There were not that many styles, but I did find a pair that I liked. Polarized lenses and great frames. Located Mauka side of Waialae Avenue the plus is they have a dedicated free parking lot behind their store. See sign on the sidewalk. Another plus is you can enter the store from the parking lot instead of having to walk around to Waialae Ave. Once inside it's a large open space with plenty to see. One entire wall dedicated to beautiful hang bags. Another wall for aromatherapy and vases. Keep walking toward Waialae and there are lovely clothes, beautiful shell lei, local kine themed Christmas ornaments on sale, jewelry at register and other such boho-ish items. Big star for these lovely unique items! There are changing rooms available. We loved all the displays of old school things like a printing press! Lost a star because sadly no welcome when we entered, asking if we needed help or show us where things were located in case we didn't see them. Lost a second star because despite our purchasing some items there was no mahalo for stopping in. We purchased some beautiful ornaments for next year and some lei that was quite reasonably priced. read more

I absolutely love this boutique and make sure I stop by when I'm visiting Oahu. A thoughtfully curated shop of beauty and wellness, home goods, clothing, stationary, tea, bags-so much more. I stumbled upon their old location nearby to Fishcake (another place worth visiting by the way!) and thought that location was super cute and this one in Kaimuki is even better with more space to mosey on about and just take it all in because it is just beautiful. This business stands out in the quality of their inventory of unique goods that uniquely can't be found easily in person or even online- such as clothing by Rumi Murakami, hair clips by Chunks, nail stickers by Jin Soon. They have an online shop though I don't think it reflects all their inventory so best bet is to show up in person. Mind you, they also have the *best* (IMHO) floral arrangements and leis. The pricing is not for the faint, but honestly-the quality in design and execution is just chefs kiss. Worth it. It doesn't stop there: if you're lucky enough to live in this paradise of an island-they offer workshops at the Ostipoff properties-a beautiful setting to learn how to make leis or arrangements. I've not had the chance to time it well during a visit but do have it on my list for that *one day*. The owner, Andrew, is very nice. I got a little too excited with the butterfly hair clips and started putting them on my hair before purchase and he let me be. We've also messaged back and forth regarding leis before on instagram and found them responsive. Make sure to order ahead during busy season because they are BOOKED AND BUSY. Sometimes if you're lucky they have extra leis so make sure to follow on instagram to keep apprised on the comings and goings on at the shop. Love love love this shop. read more

I have been obsessed with the style of lei that uses flower blocking made popular by Jill Harunaga of Stamen + Style. She retails her lei and hosts lei workshops out of Island Boy Shop in Kaimuki, of which also creates equally beautiful lei. I had admired Island Boy's work for quite some time and when the special occasion arose, I took the opportunity of ordering the guest of honor's lei from them. I especially appreciated the ease of ordering from their website. I chose the women's lei which is a made to order lei using their seasonal best flowers. You can also upgrade to several variations ranging in price as follows: premium, luxe, unique crafted, hapai, and premium hapai. In the notes section, I indicated the date I wanted to pick up and I paid for the lei on-line. In minutes I got a text confirming my order. Pick up was simple as they are open daily from 10am to 6pm. Really cute boutique! On the higher end but it's because many products are handmade with quality materials. I had ordered a lei for a baby shower through their website. I received a prompt response from their staff confirming my order, in addition to the auto-confirmation with my receipt. I had never visited the store before but I follow them on Instagram and loved their styles of lei. Each lei is made to order and unique! They also sometimes host lei workshops at the Ossipoff Cabin and pop-ups from local vendors on their rooftop area. Please note that as of July 2024, there are two entrances to the store: one from Wai'alae and one from their parking area. Wai'alae entrance: it's the building next to the Kaimukī Superette building. If you Google Maps search, Island Boy still shows as the CamSecurity building. Parking lot entrance: If you're driving, they have free parking in the back at 1211 9th Avenue. Make sure you enter in the right way; it's not the driveway immediately behind the Kaimukī Superette building, but the one after it. Again, Google Maps will show it looking like someone's private driveway but if you go, you'll see the concrete surface lot. There are signs showing that the parking is reserved for Keep It Simple and Island Boy customers EXCEPT the first stall, which is marked as "private". The other store entrance is on the makai side of the parking lot. They have lots of interesting things to look at: home decor, clothing and accessories, gifts, stationary, etc. Sometimes they have freshly made lei for sale at the store (but I would suggest pre-ordering on their website if you're able to). read more

I love coming into this local shop in Kaimuki-- and with the Holiday season just around the corner, Island Boy is the perfect spot to shop for gifts. You can tell that the people that curate the items here have TASTE. Everything here is the best quality, super unique, and very functional items. If you're looking for a gift for "that person who has everything" this shop is perfect for a fun unique gift. And while things are a bit pricey here, you can definitely find something small for under $25. I recently found my new scent here, first I bought the $9 tester and packed it with me on a trip and then went back to buy the full size. I've also bought fun little clips for under $20 and a really beautiful pareo for $30. With the store being called "Island Boy" there definitely is an island inspiration and they do carry local brands but there are also European and Asian influences as well. The leather options here from bags, to wallets- are so beautiful and come in some great colors. They even have a skin care section with some brands that you can't find at any ol' Sephora. The service is a great and they even do complimentary gift wrapping, and yes, the gift wrap is gorgeous!! Pro tip: free parking in the back if you can't find street parking on Waialae! read more

If you are looking for something unique for you or a friend look no further than Island Boy in Kaimuki. Located on Waialae avenue, the cute store front is easy to pass by so make sure to look for their sign on the sidewalk. If parking is a must, you are in luck because they have a private lot off the back, entrance on 9th. I was looking for face oils and Andrew who was working was very informed with the products in store. He even tested the cleansing oil out on his wrist for me to see how thick it was and allowed me to test out the face oil on my wrist. He also mentioned the Tofu Skin brand is made in Palolo which took me aback. I have used the Tofu Skin face oil product for two weeks now and love it! They also have clothes, jewelry, hair products, furniture, and hand crafted items. You can tell the care that goes into each product sourced, how it is displayed, and the information Andrew knows about each product. He also mentioned something about shave ice on Sunday's but not sure when that will start. So if you are in the area, definitely recommend checking it out! read more

This cute gift shop has quite a collection of things! I came to check it out for the nail polish, which I heard was quick drying and can wash away with just water! I was amazed that a tiny store carried a LOT of things, and many were locally made. I saw some stuff from Europe and also Japan. From accessories to skincare, they had it! I believe they specialize in flower arrangements and leis, but have WAY more stuff. I will have to come back to buy some skincare products for sure. I ended up just getting my nail polishes for the sake of time. I can't wait to come back and really taking a look at the great products they carry. It is hard to describe a tiny shop with so much cool stuff. You might just want to walk in and check it out. read more

It's such an aesthetic shop. There is something for everybody in here and it's super fun just to walk through and see what they have. So happy they are in Kaimuki. There is also a beautiful dog that is there sometimes, I have yet to see him but hopefully I can meet that giant dog soon. read more

I saw an article in Honolulu Magazine (I think?) on some stunning lei by stamen and style. One of their partners is this lovely joint, newly relocated to Kaimukī. I needed a lei for a special couple celebrating an anniversary. I was able to call Island Boy to inquire on what might be available for a same day purchase. I was told stamen and style did deliveries on Thursdays (this was a Tuesday), that there were not any grab and go lei, but that two lei could be ready, made by Island Boy, before my dinner reservation (I think It ended up being 3-4 hours ahead, when I called). If I filled out an online preorder, I was told it would be ready for me to pickup, before the meal time. Walking in, I saw Such a nice space...I could tell they put a lot of time and effort into their new spot. The lei were so pretty, I wanted to keep them for myself.
