COVID UPDATE This is one of my favorite Japanese restaurants on Maui. It has ample parking, but we decided to get takeout instead of mingling with the crowds. On a Friday night, this place was packed with people waiting outside. It took me ten minutes to get a parking space. inside, people seemed happy and loud. The staff were wearing masks and safety measures were being taken. I will come back for indoor dining when it is less crowded. October 17,2023 - Tuesday **WARNING: Management wasn't the best tonight, possible training on empathy & better solutions** According to my check-ins I've became a regular here and never got the chance to provide a review. Every time I come here everything turns out pretty great which is why we keep coming back. We've always shared the experience word of mouth with friends/families & acquaintances. Since we've moved to Maui this has been the spot. Unfortunately, all it really takes is one bad experience to allow me to now share it with others. Tonight we decided last minute to visit Isana since it's like why not. We took a leap since usually the wait can be hit or miss if a reservation hasn't been made. (I use RESY to schedule an appointment - download the app for this Island) didn't wait that long, was able to get a seat when we checked in. Sat at one of the tables near the window - so you can see the entrance way. OUR ORDER Seafood Dynamite Isana Fried Rice Fried Chicken Kalbi plate (Kim Chee fried rice + Mac salad) Hamachi Jalapeño Everything tasted delicious, friend rice + chicken came out first. Which was great since it was basically a shareable for a party of 3. Raw fish came next, Kalbi plate & lastly the seafood dynamite. As we dipped into the different options provided it was great until we decided to taste the Kalbi plate.....one word: SPOILED Yes, we kid you not, the mac salad + Kim Chee fried rice was spoiled. Smelt very sour & the mass of the smell was very strong. Not going to lie when it was delivered I didn't quite grasp the smell of the whole plate yet. So I did take a bite of the Mac salad, but wasn't sure in that moment since I did have other flavors working in my mouth. While eating the fried rice + chicken, I then soon smelt this sour stench within the air. Unsure of where it was coming from, I then started to look down at the plate in front of me. So I did bring my face closer to my plate & realized this salad smelt sour. Of course I need a second opinion to verify what I'm smelling, everyone on my table was like "Yea that's spoiled" soon after we tried to look for our waiter who really wasn't as tentative towards our table but we could see her hanging out at the sushi bar just socializing with her coworkers. Once we got her attention to let her know the discouraging news she didn't let us finish our sentence & immediately replied "smells spoiled" which gave off the impression that this item was spoiled yet you still decided to serve this to us. She then advised us she will get this taken cared of, which she did seek help from her manager. Maybe about 5-7mins later, her manager walked over to our table **keep in mind from where we sat we can see the waiter + manager having a discussion over our concern** she then proceeded to let us know our concerns have been brought to her attention, here is how the conversation went: Manager: I've tasted the Mac salad & it was just made 2-hours ago so it wasn't spoiled Us: Did you really just taste the Mac Salad we had? Manager: Yes, it's not spoiled. It could be the mustard or eggs that's made with it if you're not used to having Mac salad that way Us: Naw it was spoiled & we smelt it, it had a sour stench Manager: No it's not spoiled, I did taste it Us: No way ***we basically just looked at each other bc we're shocked at the fact she said she tasted it yet we clearly seen her standing at the register the whole time*** Manager: Do you just want a plate of Kalbi? Us: thinking bout it - ok sure we can do that After she walked away we felt disappointed that she really lied to our faces but never took ownership of the situation. Then we realized we really want that new plate, who knows what they're gonna do to it since we've brought up a concern. Crazy to know they seem to risk food poisoning and not trusting what the customer feedback we provided. Not sure if it was a new batch that was made but they've been scooping from an old one, well never know but all we know for sure is that the one served to us was definitely SPOILED! After tonight's experience, not sure if we will come back. read more

Great food and excellent service. We were seated both times that we came here without a reservation. Our server (I can't remember her name unfortunately) was so amazing and was able to get in our order for happy hour! And we sat down 5 minutes prior to the end. Parking was a challenge because of the popular happy hour. We were there just after and found a couple seats at the bar. We were not greeted right away, but that's OK as we had plenty to talk about. Where do I even start... as a lifelong sushi lover I thought I've had great sushi before but I can confidently say everything we ordered was perfect here! It's not a question whether raw seafood in Hawaii is fresh or not, but wow 4 days later I'm still thinking about how everything just melted in my mouth. So we've never been here before, we seen their instagram and yelp with great reviews. We love sushi so we are very picky. This place was delicious. The fish was so fresh. I want to thank the hostess and manager who were so kind as you do need reservations for this restaurant (we didn't know) but they made accommodations for us. So thank you! My husband and I recently visited Maui & were staying in Kihei just up the street from Isana. We ended up going back a second night in a row after our first experience. The first night was for regular dinner service at 6:30 pm & second night was for the happy hour starting at 9 pm. I've been to Isana a dozen times and it's one of my favorite places on Maui. I do agree that the service can be hit or miss, which I think leads to some of the less than favorable reviews on here. However, the food is very good and the atmosphere is great. It's a big, spacious dining room which can be hard to find in Kihei, with ocean views. You can walk across the street after happy hour and watch the sunset. You can't beat it. These are my favorite menu items: * Sushi Rolls: I love the Caterpillar, Broke Da Mouth, Rainbow, White Dragon, and the "Ultimate Roll!" Get the Ultimate Roll (and a few others) to share -- it's gigantic and also topped with ahi poke! Nigiri and hand rolls are also great. * Appetizers: The Salmon Belly is my favorite and not-to-be-missed. Tempura is also excellent. * Entrees: The entrees here are very generous portions. Kalbi Ribs are a favorite among my family. The Slow-Roasted Pork Chow Fun and Isana Fried Rice are both delicious! Desserts are mostly from Lappert's Ice Cream (delicious), and the tempura fried ice cream is a treat. The only menu item I have ever been disappointed in has been the ramen. It's actually a really fresh, lighter ramen with lots of fresh, crisp veggies which I love. However, the ramen egg is *never* a jammy ramen egg as it should be. It is 100% always a hard-boiled egg. And that's the best part of the ramen, right?! The drinks are also delicious, although I am so sad they no longer carry the sparkling sake I loved. Happy Hour is worth a visit but can be packed. I'm from Chicago so we have good sushi, but Isana was INCREDIBLE sushi. Our 2 appetizers were melt-in-your-mouth delicious. We also ordered 2 rolls - I remember saying "let's not get a basic dragon roll". Wow was I wrong! When on the Island of Maui... 1. LOCATED on a beautiful strip in Kihei, HI. The dinner scene in this area is worth bragging about. Listening to the ocean across the street and eating fresh catches of the day is simply hard to top 2. The atmosphere is clean, spacious, and equipped for 'finer" dining as well as family-styled. I chose to sit at the bar to get a good view of the entire restaurant form each side. The bartender was extremely down to earth, knowledgable, and welcoming as I was just a weekend tourist. There is also a nice sized picture upon entering showing the history of the restaurant which I can completely respect/ 3. FOOD/ DRINKS - We started off with a seaweed salad, soup, and a coup of green tea. I tend to judge places right from their appetizers and presentation. It is safe to say I devoured those and was not leaving here w/o ordering desert. That being said our "fresh Catch" entree was tasty and the Spicy Tuna roll did the job. Sushi and Sushi rolls are tough to judge as you really have to have a variety of knowledge on how to judge fish if you are used to the land animals... This place did not disappoint and I would be glad to come back here again and order the same thing and more. P.S. We did Sansei the day before and a group of friends invited us to Isana in Kihei, another sushi spot. Why not try a new place! They checked proof of vaccination and were very thorough of it (they counted the number of shots you had and you needed an ID). Menu is pretty extensive with sushi and some apps/entrees. Amongst the 5 of us, we split the Hamachi Jalepeno, the Broke da Mouth, the volcano, baked California, and the Kalbi. They were all pretty tasty. My personal favorite was the baked California with scallops. The Kalbi ribs were pretty good but there was quite a bit of fat which I did not care for. The volcano I thought was okay and did not have as much flavor as I anticipated compared to the baked California. Overall I did not think this was a bad place for some sushi on the island and wouldn't mind coming back here. However if I was on the west side of the island and driving all the way to Kihei/Wailea for sushi, I would probably try a different place. read more
