The lean bbq pork was very mildly grilled, sweet tasting, slightly chewy and could use more time on the grill or maybe needed some fat. Curry chicken vermicelli was served in a large bowl of yellow curry with chicken and potatoes. Bean sprouts and mint leaves were provided separately for us to add to our dishes. The curry was watery with coconut milk presence, not spicy and in dire need of spice undertones. It tasted sweet and frankly, quite a letdown. It's typically been very tasty, large portions, and relatively inexpensive. In addition, the service is fast and compassionate. However, I returned after a 5 year hiatus, I've noticed a few things. Despite the noodles being garlicky, the noodles were very very oily. The oil was seeping out in the to-go box. Ordinarily, the noodles are astounding and I will not be convinced otherwise. The pho is the reason I give this restaurant a 4 star. The pho was bland, soup was warm which didn't cook the beef properly, and the noodles were oddly mushy. Perilla is known for its garlic noodles so I was really excited for them since I love garlic. I got the Garlic Noodles with Pork Chop and it looked amazing. They are not skimping on the portions here either. A mountain of noodles and two large slabs of pork chop. The pork was super tender and not dry at all. Unfortunately the flavor was lacking. The garlic noodles didn't have much seasoning except for an oily taste. On the other hand, the pork chops were over seasoned and extremely salty. The menu numbers are not the same at all Perillas so don't blindly go to the one on Haight thinking that you'll get the same thing (i did that once). Additionally I always get the papaya salad to start. Parking can be a but of a challenge but it you don't mind circling for a bit or walking 200 yards in the cold, there are always free spots on the North side of Lincoln next to the park. The service here was amazing. The servers made sure we were ok and filled out water cups several times throughout our time here. There was not a time where our water cups were empty. They are definitely super vigilant. The five spice chicken and imperial rolls were just like how I remembered. For garlic noodles, I'm not sure if I came on a bad day or if my taste buds had changed, but they weren't as garlicky as I remembered. But I do remember the bouncy noodles and the noodles were perfectly chewy. The flavor was still really good but just lacked garlic flavor. First time dining here and the food didn't disappoint. Great neighborhood Vietnamese restaurant in Sunset. Came here after a chilly (but clear) day exploring SF. We were with friends from out of town and wanted to introduce them to a San Francisco treat... hence garlic noodles! LOGISTICS Street parking only - this is Sunset after all. We were able to find parking a few blocks down off the main street, so if you're willing to walk it shouldn't be an issue. Despite coming in on a Saturday night, our group of 4 was seated quickly, maybe waiting at most 15 min for them to clear out. For the most part they were friendly and quick on getting our orders in. They were also very generous on the tea / water refills, so our cup of tea was never half full. Food also came out very quickly after ordering, so good spot for a quick lunch or if you're hangry for dinner and can get a seat. FOOD Spring Rolls: I've had better, but these satisfied the craving. I felt the rice paper + noodles were a little tougher than other places where I've had them. Imperial Rolls: Can't go wrong with the fried variation, and these hit the spot. Very crispy with and refreshing to eat in a lettuce wrap with other fresh veggies. I'd opt for these over the spring rolls, especially if coming from a chilly day. Garlic Noodles: We came here with a goal to try some SF garlic noodles, and Perila met my expectations! Every entree we ordered came with a protein choice and garlic noodles, which are really the star of the show. Slightly oily in a delicious way and very garlicky... but the noodles are thick, chewy, with a slight bounce to them. Definitely not like spaghetti or whatever you get when you order garlic noodles at Cajun shrimp shack in South Bay. The side of broccoli that came with the garlic noodles and protein made a nice veg break too. Pork Chops: If you're looking for best-bang-for-buck protein... I feel like the pork chops were a much bigger portion than just getting grilled pork (at least from looking at my other friends who ordered grilled pork). Plus I imagine they were much juicer, like cooking a whole steak and locking in the juices. Lots of time pork chops are dry, but I feel like Vietnamese restaurants do a really good job with them. The pork chop was very tender and easy to cut into with the knife. Very good to dip into the fish sauce mix that was provided. 5 Spice Chicken: My partner ordered this... and while I really liked my pork chops, I thought this was better. Crispy, juicy, and flavorful... these also paired super well with the noodles. It wasn't as fatty but it didn't compromise on flavor / satisfaction. I usually think chicken dishes are boring, but this was not. It's also a chicken dish I don't see often at the Vietnamese restaurants I go to, so if I ever come back I'm ordering this instead. VALUE For the portions and quality, their garlic noodle plates are a really good deal for the city. I've gotten used to paying $20+ per person for a meal.. so it was refreshing to see entree prices under that. Especially for the quantity - we ended up taking home leftovers.
