In today's "just get a new one" mindset, keeping an older laptop alive is something that not all that many folks seem to do. The last time I needed to repair one of mine, I was able to buy the part and do the work. Time, however, has diminished my eyesight, removed my tools and workspace, and left me with a Fan Error instead of the familiar startup screen. Irving Electronics is almost within walking distance, and in the space of a few hours I dropped off the laptop (and the replacement fan I could no longer install), paid a deposit, got a labor estimate within an hour and within two hours I was picking it up. My desktop computer had a Windows update, and it would not boot up. I tried everything I knew, and nothing worked. I could not get to the boot menu because the computer would not recognize my wireless keyboard or a wired keyboard I borrowed. Irving Electronics charged me a $25 examination fee when I dropped it off, and then texted me later that same day that it was ready. There was also a very reasonable repair charge. Needed to remove 2 screws to replace a keyboard on my laptop. They were stripped. Guy asks me "what do you want to pay me"? I said I don't know, you tell me. I said "$5-$10, I really don't know. Mind you, just needed TWO screws removed. He said "I'll charge you $35....$5 is insulting. No.....stating "what do you want to pay me" and expecting to get paid $35 to remove 2 screws is insulting. I came to Irving Electronics later in the afternoon once my charger wouldn't hold inside the laptop. Gary had a substitute charger that worked! He gave me some good advice also. I had to be able to work my laptop as the next day I had a project due and couldn't miss my conference call. The charger he sold me (it's a multiple pc charger - lots of different heads on it to fit a multitude of laptops) and there was a perfect one for my laptop! Next day I brought my laptop in so they could try to fix the problem... When I came back he said "we were able to fix it here without ordering a part". He had told me what the costs would be and I agreed. When I picked it up it was working and my bill was the same as I was quoted. I felt he wanted to help me with my problem and delivered on his service... What more could anyone else want or expect? I'll go back to Irving Electronics if I have another problem. I had a Samsung home theater that would power down when i turned it on with a message that said "Protection". I looked at some of the recent reviews and decided to give this place a try. I was told that it would be $25 for them to take a look and diagnose the problem and would apply towards the cost of the fix if it could be fixed. Turns out that it cannot be fixed and so i asked the owner for a receipt that indicated that it could not be fixed and why it could not be fixed. To my disbelief he said that it would be an extra $75 to print out the receipt with this information. I am not complaining about the $25 i paid, but the fact that the owner wanted an extra $75 to provide me written proof that my device could not be fixed. I will leave it up to the readers to figure out if they should do business with this establishment. read more

**As I also posted on Google** I found Irving Electronics while searching Google for a place that would buy an older 46" Samsung LED ('08 model). I thought to gave it a try and was really pleased with the experience! I called Gary and was greeted properly with the name of the store. I explained my situation in that I was trying to make some room and was wanting to try and sell this TV as I had a new one. (With our current living arrangements of having to take in my ailing brother and converting the living room into a medical bedroom, having anything extra right now just isn't viable.) He asked what condition the TV was in, if it was in working order, and what brand and model it was. I explained to him in full detail everything I knew but did not have the model number on me, so I asked if he could give me a few minutes to get that for him. He said that's not a problem and to just call back with it as soon as I could get to it. After a few minutes, I did call back and provided the model number. He asked me what I was looking to get out of it, so I proceeded to throw a number out there not really knowing where to start. We ended up meeting a little lower, which was fine. I told him I could be up there shortly and he said that was fine to just come up there when I could get up there. I ended up asking how late they were open, and to my surprise, a lot later than any other electronics repair shop I've ever dealt with. When I got up to the shop and entered the shop, Gary was actually outside taking a short break when I arrived. He promptly came in behind me and apologized for being outside. He then asked how I could be helped in a professional manner. I explained that I had just called and he smiled and says, "You're the Samsung guy!". I laugh and tell him that I am indeed that person. So we go out to my car to get the TV out of the back seat and immediately see's that I'm having a hard time getting the TV out and picked up. I explain to him that I have multiple health issue's and picking up anything very heavy is extremely difficult. He then proceeds to tell me that I do not need to worry about picking the TV up that he will get it. I ask to make sure and he jokingly tells me, "Either TV will die or I might die, but I am carrying this TV" I laugh and tell him ok. Once inside, he gets the TV setup on a temporary cart and explains that we will need to test the TV, I agree (fully). He gets it setup, I tell him the remote batteries are probably as old as the TV itself (which we find out to be true) and may not work. Sure enough, the batteries barely power the remote, but enough to get the TV on and set to a TV station. After a short time, he proceeded to pay me, in cash, the exact amount as promised over the phone. From here, my experience went from just a business experience to basically gaining a new friend. I stayed there for quite some time, to the point of my wife ALMOST threatening to kill me (ask Gary, it's true!). We talked about a lot of things; electronics, health, family, TV's, business, customer service and more. He even shared some of his personal background with me as far as his life up till now and I did the same. He showed me around the shop, explained what his shop was about and what services he has done and does today and even went as far as offering me a soda or some water. Now, a word from me personally. For anyone that has had a negative thing to say about Irving Electronics or Gary, please, do yourself a favor and try this business again. His beliefs about how business should run and the service he provides is honest. For those that have not tried his business, he will tell you up front service fee's and what he can do for you. I truly believe he is out to make a honest living, to run a honest business, and if my experience isn't proof of this, I don't know what is. I had a broken screen that I needed replaced and I had to come to Irving Electronics to get it repaired. I was desperate and needed it fixed fast and I am thankful that it was open on Thanksgiving. However, the price was simply absurd. The screen itself was 67 dollars, but I was charged with a hefty sum of 135$ total, meaning he granted a labor fee of 68 dollars for less than 20 minutes of work (closer to 10) for a relatively simple repair. This is an evaluation of 340 $ per hour, simply an unacceptable price for the level of work that was actually performed. I would have bought the component myself, but the store doesn't offer the screens to sell to the "public". The repair was done well although it's an easy job, was done in a timely fashion during Thanksgiving day, but the price was simply too much. This place is just horrible. The previous writer is correct in saying that it looks like a tornado hit the shop. It looks like it's owned by Sanford & Son or a never ending junky garage sale when you walk in the front door. I should have ran when I saw it. I still allowed the owner to solder (fuse) my tablets charging port back on. He stated it would be $25 to do so but if he couldn't fix it, that it would be $65 and could he just fix it rather than calling me. I said no. If you can't solder it, I will come and pick it up. It's just a cheap tablet for my daughter to play games on, so why would I pay $65 for him to fix it and it didn't cost that much. I guess he didn't like that he wouldn't be making more money. So, I took pictures of the port because I thought he may break it just so he could try to charge me more. He said he would open my tablet the next day. I left my tablet on a Wednesday. I never heard from him on Thursday. So I called. He stated that he hadn't opened it because it was going to take a while to fix. Soldering? Please. It doesn't take that long. I believe that he was money hungry and angry that he couldn't get $65.00 out of me. Friday comes, it still isn't fixed. No phone call from him. I called him and he said give him a couple of hours. I called at 6:30 pm.. he states I don't know if it's fixed but you can come pick it up. When I picked it up, it was open. He stated I couldn't close it back up but it's charging. I just picked up the tablet and went home. I was just so disgusted with the bootleg business. A few day later, solder came loose. I went back because on the receipt there is a guarantee. A 60 day and 30 day. As soon as I told him what happened. He just became very angry and hastily broke my tablet open causing the buttons to fall out on the dirty floor. I didn't know that all of my buttons fell out. I just felt one hit my foot. He began arguing with me saying that I want him to work for free. What is my problem and when I answered back he began saying that I needed to leave. I told him that I have the receipt with the guarantee and that he at least needs to try to solder it. He continue to holler that he gets paid $65.00 for this and stormed off to the back of the shop with my tablet. After a while, he called me back to the back of the shop. He told me, it's broken there is nothing I can do. I said okay, just put it back together like it was when I handed it to you. He started screaming, you gave it to me opened. I kept telling him, NO I DID NOT!!! I don't know how to open it up all the way and I wouldn't have done that in fear that I may break something!! He kept screaming at me so I called him crazy. He then threatens to call the police on me. I told him to call them. He sat the phone back down and tried to solder my tablet all the while belittling me. I said I will just contact the BBB. He says the BBB can't do anything, WHO IS THAT?? THE CCC, THE BBB? Get out of here!!! You are threatening me!!! He completely lost his mind!!! I asked him why did it take him two days to do something that he is now doing in a few minutes. He angrily said, YOU CANT FIX IT IN TWO DAYS!!!. I just kept begging him to please just close my tablet back up so I can leave. He fused my tablet back together (not the charging port) and handed it back to me in two pieces. I just left. This was the worst experience ever!! This man is very argumentative and angry for no apparent reason. DO NOT TAKE ANYTHING TO THIS MAN!!!! YOU WILL REGRET IT!!! Have returned here, over and over, and over again for all kinds of repairs-- computers, TV's, and other items too. If I'm not sure if they can fix it, then I just swing by or call and ask. They are very knowledgeable with many years of experience. I've referred family, friends and acquaintances. They are good people, and they care about customer service which is becoming more rare these days. They are definitely straight shooters. You can trust the advice that they give you on your repair or replacement. When they're not 100% sure they don't just sell you something to get a sale. They care about having long term customers for other needs in the future. I know, personally, I am leery with repairs when I don't understand, but I've trusted this business for over a decade, as do many friends and family. This is my 1st time to write a review, so may come back again with a more specific instance soon. SAVE YOUR MONEY. Horrible service. I wish I could give 0 stars!! This place is absolutely ridiculous. Our family bought a new TV lamp from them for our TV because our TV lamp went out (or we thought). We brought our old lamp with us when we picked up the new lamp for $100. The guy working told us that if this lamp didn't work, it was no big deal and to come back and he could give us our old lamp back instead. So we tried the new lamp and it ended up not working so we called back and asked for our old lamp and refund but they said they didn't do refunds and that they didn't have our old lamp. He NEVER even mentioned final sale to us before we made the purchase. If the man working hadn't acted like we would be refunded or if he had actually kept his word and given us our original lamp back after he specifically said he would save it and wait for us to let him know if it worked or not, then it wouldn't be an issue. This is a place that specializes in things like this and I'm sure that they can tell whether or not a lamp is burnt out just by looking at it or testing it. For them to do this is absolutely ridiculous. Such a SCAM. We will NEVER be using them again!! DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY! read more
