On this visit, she immediately insulted my current bra (that she had recommended on my last visit!), and then proceeded to insult me personally based on my preferences (both to my face and to her staff). I don't know why people love this place. I brought two bras initially because she assured me that the bras were my size, but also gave me an extender. This experience was not without sparky comments and shaming. The second sales lady said, "in case something happens". Even with the extenders the bras were uncomfortable, one giving me a blister. I came back to try again -- simply because it's a black owned business. I explained what happened showed her the scarring to be met with protest, "none of my bras come down there!" Sure enough two bras they brought me, "come down there" right along the scar line. With this evidence she qas still defensive busting in the draped room to scold me some more. Pro's - The staff succeeded in helping me find a bra that fit better than a bra has in a long time. For that, I am grateful. Con's - The bra-fitting process is not for the faint of heart. It essentially consists of standing in a dingy little dressing room behind a flimsy curtain and having four or five different members of the staff pop in and out to look at your breasts, with and without bras on, as you try on their various recommendations. I didn't get a mean vibe from the owner, as others have said, it was more of a classic no-nonsense New Yorker, which I appreciate. Honesty is hard to find these days and will help you get a better fitting bra. That said, I was a little hurt when she asked me if I had breastfed. I have never had children, and though I know my girls aren't as perky as they once were, it just seemed rude to assume. Overall, for the price point, I expected a more premium experience. Iris, you are no doubt talented and experienced and good at what you do. If you invested a small sum in making the dressing rooms nicer and practiced a little more professionalism and restraint -- the staff were eating their lunch and gossiping in the fitting room area literally inches from me! -- I'm sure these nasty reviews would be a thing of the past. read more

Not going back to this place ever. The owner is simply rude. She acts like she knows so much and condescends to customers. Then she treats customers like a piece of meat by bringing out bra after bra and having you try on so many for the "perfect fit". The bras are super expensive. Super honest and professional, my bra fitting took less than 30 minutes and when you trust a knowledgeable business to take care of you, bay-beee.... They got my "girls" right by just sight and I know these knockers aren't even on a "school grading scale" (A-F)‍ although they carry sizes up to size M. I was breathing better with the new bras and left with one of my purchases on! Black female owned, they have a customer for as long as they are in business. They also do alterations and repairs. 1 star - Former 20-year customer, never returning After nearly 20 years as a loyal customer, I'm finally done with this place. While the bra fittings were always good, the owner Iris has consistently been rude and unprofessional - but have always chalked it up to another New York experience- however my recent experiences crossed every line. During my last visit about gift certificates, Iris became hostile and made a scene, even though I was simply asking about balances. She did agree to honor half of an expired certificate, which I appreciated but I was nit even asking for. However, when I returned to shop, she immediately reminded me "how lucky" I was about the gift certificate, then proceeded to throw bras at me in the fitting room. Worst of all, she loudly told her employees that I "didn't even know how to put a bra on correctly" while I was trying on bras in the back. It was completely humiliating and unnecessary. After reading other reviews here, I see this behavior is a pattern. It's a shame because I wanted to support a local business, but this level of disrespect is unacceptable. Um, I don't even know how to describe what shopping there is like, but it's not pretty. I had heard about this shop from a friend and was excited to invest in some professionally fitted bras, but instead I got the most intense experience that left me with expensive bras that don't fit me correctly. Iris was rude and dismissed any concerns I had about the bras with absolute disgust, informing her assistants to no longer give me any more to try on, because "she'd tried on enough" (after a few minutes in the dressing room and a handful of bras). I still have no idea what my correct size is, because she didn't measure a thing, and the bras I felt pressured into buying fit me horrendously. I've now worn them for the past few days and they're digging and poking into me in all kinds of uncomfortable spots and the cups don't fit properly at all. I'm no bra expert, but even I can tell these are clearly not right for me. It was, honestly, a totally miserable experience and I was left reeling. Long time customer. Even though I'm no longer local, I make it a point to visit Iris when I'm in NYC. I'm saddened to see some negative reviews since my experiences have been so very positive. The main reason to come is to get bras that fit. I love that Iris stocks many brands and styles in my (larger) size so I can get something attractive, comfortable and supportive. The service is wonderful - like back in the day when people actually helped you. Ok, it's not antiseptic - but know this is a well meaning, kind staff and they aren't trying to put anyone out. I was there a few weeks ago and I must have tried on 30 bras. They were patient and flexible even as we pulled the millionth size. There was a super nice ($$$) bra that looked incredible but i said it was digging in just a bit, and Iris told me I couldn't get it :) You are, if you come here, paying for their expertise. Ask for Iris to help you - she's the best - and enjoy her. Maybe I have a thick skin or just love a good new yorker, but I've never been offended or hurt by anything Iris or her staff has said - and i've laughed a lot. Owner is rude...my husband still purchased lingerie because he's a gentleman. HER rudeness was from asking if there was lingerie that cost $50, her reply Wasnt nice, he was but happy to surprise me. SO,I called to inquire about what happened and she hung up on me. THEN, received a call back from one of her employees. I was very excited to get fitted at Iris Lingerie after seeing it ranked as a top bra fitter in NYC in several articles. The shop is was very cute and small, but they seemed to have a huge selection of bras. Upon entering, I was told by an unwelcoming employee that I had to buy a bra to get fitted. It's a really strange concept to me to agree to pay for something that I hadn't yet tried, but I agreed to do so and fully intended to leave that day with a bra. The employee told me there would be a wait for a fitting, so I thought I would look at the options in the meantime. I was quite overwhelmed by the selection, so asked the employee to point me in the right direction/offer me a few recommendations. The employee rudely told me that they couldn't help me until I was fitted and left. I believe the store owner Iris was there, and I was relieved when she came over to where I was standing. I was expecting her to greet me or to offer assistance. Instead, she ignored me and proceeded to put some items in a drawer. I left the store after completely disappointed. I wanted so badly to have a wonderful experience here after checking out the website and reviews, and I do believe people have had wonderful experiences here. I, unfortunately, was not one of those people. I felt unwelcome and extremely uncomfortable. I came here a few months ago and purchased 2 bras. I had a great experience and learned so much about fitting and bra sizes. My mom came along and did not have such a great experience because she was not happy with the options available. A few months later, we returned because I was going on a trip and wanted to purchase more bras, I bring my mom along with me this time as well and asked her to be open to the process and the options provided for her. We both had a great experience and purchased a total of 5 bras. Having large breasts makes it difficult to find bras that are stylish and pretty, but this place has lots of options. I love the staff, who are willing to educate you on the sizes and why the sizes chosen are a great fit for you. The owner is diligent in her quest to find a comfortable bra for her customers and I love that. I have been to other shops were I was measured, shown models that would fit well and understood that undergarments were not returnable. I was offered a free fitting with the purchase of a bra when I arrived. I asked how much the fitting would cost if I was unable to find something I liked. I was very rudely told this wasn't an option and was lectured about customer service. I intended to buy several bras, but just wanted to know the cost in case it did not work out. The odd lecture continued for a while. After being asked my size, I was scoffed and told that wasn't my size in a very condescending and rude manner. I turned around and walked out of the store. Iris is a wiz!! She knows her stuff and gives you yiur size, even if you don't think it is, first try. My most recent visit was to have older bras adjusted. It is easy to do at Iris lingerie, Iris even washed out the bra I walked in wearing to have that adjusted too. The staff is also amazing. They're friendly and more importantly, knowledgeable. Love this place, won't buy my bras anywhere else at this point. (Buy local!) I have been to a lot of bra fitters and there is no one as good as Iris for comfort, picking a flattering fit, and good quality. I also have bought undershirts, lingerie wash and slips there, all very happy-making. Iris is quite a character, chatty and fun. She never tries to upsell me. I once overheard her try to talk a woman out of a post-mastectomy bra that she thought she didn't need! I also love Sam, her assistant, who is always stylishly turned out and at this point has memorized my size (and I don't even go there all often). The shop itself is charming, and nicely kept up. There are three changing rooms and on weekend it gets busy, but in a nice way. They keep records of what you buy for future reference. A gem. read more

I had a very awkward experience here that honestly i've been thinking about for months. When I came in the employee said there was a "complimentary bra fitting with the purchase of a bra" which I thought was strangely worded. I hadn't asked for a fitting specifically and had just stopped in. I was ushered into the back office/break room where there are two fitting rooms and wasn't able to look at the bras much. Throughout the process the staff insisted on fitting me, entered the fitting room when i was completely nude on top without asking to come in multiple times, pointed to underarm fat and said "this is another issue, this is not from the bra", and would unhook whatever bra i was trying on to "help" without asking. It overall felt condescending, awkward, and forceful. Embarrassing and i just felt very uncomfortable- it seemed implied that "we're all women here so this should be fine". I'm sure lots of customers would prefer discretion and this should be asked. I went to Rack Shack in Bushwick and had a lovely and much more accommodating, calm experience. I hope the store reflects on consent and on how they speak to customers about their body. Shame on them for telling many customers that they are fat or that the bra doesn't look good because they don't exercise (listed on other reviews). read more

Excellent service by Sam. Sam listened to my past bra issues and returned with 3 stylish and colorful (red, black deep purple) selections. Iris experienced eye sized up my fit and Sam returned with 3 stylish and colorful (red, purple and a black sports bra) A peach beauty was hand picked by Iris to replace the red one which was the priciest. I am in the CORRECT CUP size now and it feels and they look better. Purchased 3 bras. Fitting rooms while functional could use refreshing. (Lost a star) Well worth my trip from Manhattan!!! Went there for some help in cup size due to an up coming cancer procedure. Had to explain this to the 2 women that work there more than twice they kept asking what do you need over and over again (basically reliving the worst diagnosis of any woman's life over & over). When they figured out I was in fact speaking English they said to measure me I'd have to buy a bra. I could understand a measuring fee but I only were sports bras. What am I going to do with a regular bra. I felt unwelcomed and unwanted there and like I bothered them since they had to come out of the rear of the establishment. read more

I unfortunately agree with the reviewers who said they felt bullied and badly treated here. I went there because this shop is legendary, and people gush about how great the people and the fitting are. But my experience was awful. The owner was sitting outside the fitting room while the fitter was with me in there, and she kept speaking disparagingly about me in the third person. The first bra the fitter brought me was three band sizes too small for me. I told the fitter that the band felt too tight on my ribcage, and the owner angrily snapped from the outside, "What's she complaining about?" The next bra was a little too baggy in the cups, after adjusting, and when I told the fitter that, the owner said, again in that same angry tone, "Did she come here to be fitted or not?" Then she lectured me about my breasts. I am a grown woman. I am aware of how breast tissue works, this is not my first time buying a bra, and I am telling you that this bra does not fit. Do not yell at me and treat me like I'm stupid about my own body. It's a vulnerable and sometimes bad experience to shop for bras when you are a larger bra size. I left the shop with a decent enough bra (though I still think the size is a little off), but feeling bruised and a little humiliated. I won't be back. It's an unwelcoming place. read more

I Loveeeee Iris so this is just for my experience today. I was just turned away by a young lady who told they were going to lunch, can I come back in 30 min? I told her no, I'll come back another time. Soooo disappointed!! It's 3pm on Saturday April 15th. I've been going to iris for yearsssss and have never been turned away for lunch. So your gonna miss out on a sale to eat? In her old shop she has 3 ladies working with her. Not sure what the issue is here in her new one. I had myself and my two daughters with me and we always get 2 bras each at least. And the bras are not cheap. So when you eat lunch the whole store eats together? That's insane. Not happy! I was told that I could not try on a bra without being fitted first and that the fitting was free. I said I did not need a fitting and they brought me 5 bras in the exact size I initially asked for, barely even adjusting the straps- 5 minutes of their time tops. Owner had an attitude that I should like what I'm given and did not listen to what I had to say about each bra. I selected one bra that was OK and asked for matching panties. They didn't have any matching panties in my size, so I said thank you and went to leave. The owner said "We said the fitting was free with the purchase of a bra." Iris is great, professional, knowledgeable, and worth every penny. I have been going to her for years and feel confident in her skills and have been pleased with every purchase. She can be a little short, but that's part of her charm! It's a splurge but if you're a busty woman, these are the breaks. I was dismayed to read some of the disparaging 1 star reviews, and just want to say that if you think your knowledge of bras is superior to an expert, if you believe you know what fits you better than Iris, then this is not the place for you. Iris is INSENSITIVE,UNPROFESSIONAL and lacks EMPATHY! Even though I did by a bra that fitted well in the cup not necessarily in size. I'm more taken by the fact that I'm handicapped with a walker,on oxygen and she stated I must leave my walker in the corner of the store and walk to the back dressing room along with very unwarranted comments toward my health. Never met her a day in her life! Even though I had concerns about the bra I tried on I wasn't able to get the cup and bearly a bra size from her.
