I'll start off by saying that the food was quite good. I got a chicken stew bowl with standard toppings and my girlfriend had the beef stew bowl. The beef patty was all right too, better than some but not like the ones at the bodegas in NYC. The additional toppings such as cheese, cucumber salad, sauces, etc. were all $1.25 each! They also will charge you for a water cup, $2.50 a piece! We ended splitting a water bottle for $1.50. The server was nice and answered all of our questions. Everything about this place is awesome. From the second you pull up to the restaurant, you know it's going to be a good time. The vibe, the decor, the flavor, the service-- all stellar. My husband got a "box" and I got a "bowl". The difference being portion size and amount of items. I HIGHLY recommend the stewed chicken, mango salsa, and cilantro sauce. How to distribute salt: HIGH and WIDE. Whew. The plain rice was so salty, which makes no sense if the cook tastes what they make. The bowls are more than 50% rice. So, clearly the rice has meaning. My plantains were burnt as you can see in the picture (burnt vs caramelized). It was a below average experience. I gave 2 stars for my two awesome previous visits. We ordered the brown stew chicken and jerk chicken box with a side order of brown stew chicken....i noticed small clear hair like fibers in the side order so I started digging through the chicken in my box and also found the same thing.....We were not able to eat the chicken or feed it to our child, due to there being plastic fiber like strings in our food.. they almost remind you of the grill brush bristles you would use to wipe the sauce on grilled foods... The strings are clear and you cant break them in half or bite through them..... it also looks and feels like plastic string. We ended up not eating it and just getting food from somewhere else, Which sucked because I was really excited about this place. I tried to call the location and get a refund or maybe try something else, but no one is answering the phone. I rinsed off the plastic strings I found in my food and put them aside to bring up there later and show the manger or at least try to find out what these are. This is not good at all. read more

My husband and I had to go to downtown Akron and decided to check out this location of Irie. We have only been to the original E. 185th location previously, a number of times. We were so excited to get some Irie as we're about 30 minutes from this location and 45 or so from the Cleveland one. The actual dining space is really nice. It's large and bright, though it seems more like a tourist spot than anything authentically Jamaican. Not really a negative just an opinion. We were able to each order our boxes with what we normally get. We were both fairly disappointed. They only had curry chicken patties and no beef. The chicken that we got, and even the cabbage, tasted completely different that what we've had from Cleveland. The jerk was quite mild as opposed to deliciously spicy. We ordered banana pudding. I wish there were more wafers as it really was just pudding with some plantain in the bottom. I wasn't a fan of the flavor of the pudding and I had a nice sized hair in it. We didn't end up telling the young lady working with the pink braids. She had enough going on and what could really be done at that point anyway. We love Irie and are happy to support, but aren't likely to come back to this location. read more

Where's the flavor?! When this place first opened the food had flavor - authentic Caribbean spices were used to prepare the food. Now it seems as if the food has been watered down. It is so very bland and tasteless. What happened? I wonder if the authentic spices and seasonings were too much for the locals. I've given the food a try three times since spices were removed thinking maybe it was just a bad chef day. But I think they will continue to compromise on good flavor to accommodate their patrons. The first time I came here I didn't really like it because I had to get rice and I didn't want any rice. Then I paid for a full meal but I didn't really get much food. They have since changed this. Now you can get all cabbage instead of any rice or mac & cheese if you like that. It's very much set up like a chipotle. Pick your base pick your toppings. They have fried bananas which I love as a dessert and pudding. I haven't had anything here that I didn't like yet. Curry chicken is my favorite. However, I like the cajun rub quite a bit too. You can eat pretty healthy here similar to chipotle depending on your choices, get cabbage instead of rice, chicken instead of beef etc. They have some really great toppings like fresh mango, fresh tomatoes, guacamole. Deliciously caramelized roasted plaintains. The cabbage was so salty I couldn't eat it and I don't believe I've ever complained of a food being too salty on a Yelp review after hundreds of them. The rice was well-cooked and moist, the jerk chicken was spicy and not dry but not super moist (it was sadly cut into a bunch of small chunks like a toddler meal). Decent overall to try but I'd have to try more of the menu to make a final determination on whether I'd be a regular. read more

Since the Jamaican spot in downtown Akron closed, I was eager to try this establishment. I kept seeing advertisements on FB so a evening hanging out with the guys led to a random trip to check this place out. Not knowing what to expect, this is setup like Chipotle. The ordering seems to go you get a bowl or a box and then follow steps 1-4? The staff seemed like they hit the gonja one to many times. As the food slid down the assembly line, if you didn't tell them what you wanted, they just stared at you. This was my first time here so it's not like I'm going to breeze through it. Step 3 seemed like it was skipped altogether and it went straight to 4 but I told the guy what I wanted in step 3 so he came back to add it. Is step 3 not part of the experience? I could be wrong here. My order was the oxtail Jamaican box with plantains, cabbage, and the Buddha veggies topped off with the fire sauce. Damage was a whopping $25 and I was shocked at the final price. Imagine spending that much at Chipotle for one person. Food was pretty good overall but the box is supposed to come with 2 sides and I guess the only sides you can get is the cabbage and plantains. I saw on their scrolling screen there were various other sides but like I said, the workers didn't seem to be there mentally. It's almost like they were in the sunken place. Again, food was good and plentiful but just crazy expensive in my opinion. My buddy got the jerk chicken and it was pretty flavorful. My nephew ordered a banana pudding and said it's the best he's had so food wise it overall pretty good. I don't think I'd make this a frequent stop but it's definitely worth trying if you're bored of everything else. To be fair, it is a bit out of my way though and I hope they stick around. read more

I ordered the jerk chicken bowl w/rice and beans, cabbage, and plantains. I was pleasantly surprised by the sides but that's about it. The chicken tasted no where near authentic jerk.
