I loved this place! I would have given it a million stars but unfortunately my heart was broken today when I entered into a political conversation with the guy who's always there and found out that he is an anti-choice, climate change denier. Yes, even in Williamsburg, and yes even in 2018.
He tried telling me f*ucked things before I just said, "Well I hope you'll start reading science" and excused myself.
Along with his rant about "not being the problem because only the guys who fly around in private jets are" even though he is literally running a print shop, each computer emits at least 1,000lbs of carbon dioxide each year, not to mention he told me how much he loved eating steak and dismissed the information that animal manufacturing is the leading contributor of greenhouse gases and climate change.
That's when he told me he doesn't believe in climate change and that "no one is doing anything wrong."He also tried telling me that abortions have been targeted to poor African American women. First I said, well abortion isn't ever "targeted," I mean by trying to access one YOU are the target for both verbal and physical assault from "pro-lifers" (like whose life do they care about when they threaten yours...pretty ridiculous hypocrisy there) and second, his information isn't at all accurate; in states/cities with the highest number of poor black women there are the least amount of clinics. Mississippi and Texas only have one left each, states with high numbers of poor African American and Hispanic women. I told him that actually poor people are some of the most attacked and mislead when it comes to seeking an abortion because capitalism only works if the masses are poor, undereducated and sick. There is no matter way to keep Walmart and McDonald's alive and well then to ensure the next generation of workers.
Then there are those who are "religious," most notably "Christians" (they are the worst when it comes to imposing their own views on others). Regardless of the fact that the bible preaches loving all animals (can you imagine Jesus cutting cows throats, force-feeding turkeys or tossing crates of live chickens on the sidewalk from trucks, with a lot of the chickens already dead?), or the fact that there isn't actually anything about abortion in there (I mean it's an archaic text written 2,000 years ago before people were educated in anatomy and science), besides all that, there is also supposed to be Separation of Church and State in this country. Which means, believe whatever you want to believe. Hate abortion? Great, don't have one. But that doesn't give you the right to tell other people what to believe or how they should live their life. Women do not exist for you. Personally, I think life can be both amazing and awful but I don't think it's a divine miracle and I believe I should have the right to believe that.
In the last decade, abortion/women's rights have been viciously attacked and really, if you are anti-choice/anti-women you should think about how many women were dying from illegal abortions before Roe v Wade. Just like preaching abstinence is not going to stop most people from having sex, making abortion illegal will only put more women's lives at risk for "theoretical" ones (no one can assume the baby will be healthy, miscarriages and stillbirths happen and in fact, they happen MORE to black and African American women - as does death during pregnancy: https://www.democracynow.org/2018/4/19/stunning_investigation_confirms_black_mothers_and).
Abortion is still safer than giving birth and no one besides the woman involved should be demanding anyone to go through that if they don't want to, are not ready, have no resources/financially unstable, have mental problems, etc., especially a stranger. I will not be force bred by an ignorant, hypocritical bible thumper. Thank you.
For the first time in a long time, I wasn't just pissed off at "another trump supporter" (I mean it's really difficult to come across them in NYC&Brooklyn considering what a diverse and in a lot of ways, liberating place this is) but I was genuinely disappointed, because this guy with a bald head (I mean he might be a skinhead I have no idea - I left before we got there. I never thought he was but now, who knows?) and beard was always so nice to me and helped me print my little poetry booklets. I would have never thought him to be someone who would put his own "values" above my own body and safety, and that of everyone other women's, the environment, clean water and air, animal welfare and any basic sense of social responsibility. His lack of caring towards others and the planet he lives on is disgraceful. He then tells me how much he loves steak, even if it comes at the cost of future generations due to climate change, but he conveniently denies it so he won't have to make any life changes, despite his "pro-life" stance, which really means he's pro "his" life, not women having the rights to their own bodies or Earth. read more
