My wife and I visited International Optometry today to find eyeglass frames for her new prescription. A decent selection focused on "designer brand" frames such as Gucci, Bvlgari, Tom Ford, Prada, etc. But quality wise, these designer brands slap their names on the frames that majority are made by parent company Luxottica, which also make Target Optical. Quality varies greatly in designer frames. For example if you purchase a Gucci watch, it's a cheaply made watch. Not the quality of Omega or Rolex that specialize in watches. If your eyeglass frames designer label makes underwear, it's probably not as good quality as brands that specialize in eyeglass frames. Quick google search helps to find good looking, durable, high quality frames. Preferably in titanium and materials that are light weight and comfortable. That being said, the staff started off friendly but I could tell they didn't want to help us. We started of being helped by a lady and then got switched to a man named Steve. I could tell he just wanted us to buy and not take our time looking at what inventory they had available. He was very impatient and not friendly at all. Steve is in the wrong line of work being that this job requires a certain level of customer service and patience to allow customers to pick the perfect frame to wear on their face for 12 hours a day. I think he should be a toll taker on the Bay Bridge, because that requires no customer and all your job requires is taking people's money. Oh wait. That job no longer exists... So I would not recommend getting designer brand frames from International Optometry; they think they are toll takers, they want to take your money and tell you to keep moving. read more

My eyes are really bad - I've only known 2 people in my life with worse vision than I have, and I can't see literally anything without my glasses. Because of that, having a good optometrist is really important to me, and Dr. Le and her staff are stellar! Yearly check ups are a breeze, and they have a really good selection of designer and non-designer frames. Her optician suggested frames that would look good on my face and have low nose bridges. There's nothing worse than glasses that float off your face because the nose bridge is too high. She accepts a pretty wide range of insurance plans too - my insurance changed 3x and I never had a problem with it! After going with my significant other in October of 2021, I realized how long it has been and that I needed to get my eyes checked again. I called in on Tuesday for a Saturday appointment and the staff was able to schedule me an appointment. Dr. Tuong-Vi has known me for years, so whenever she sees me, she already knows who I am right away. Her and her staff always take great care of me and she always asks how my family is doing. I went in to get my eye exam as well as get my contacts as well. First things first, once you enter and let them know you are here for an appointment, they will have you go wash your hands and have a seat. From the time that I was there for my significant others' appointment and my own, they are very clean and they sanitize after every patient. They confirmed my insurance and information and brought me back afterwards. Dr. Tuong-Vi was very thorough in breaking down my insurance and what would work best for me. I always appreciate the care that Dr. Tuong-Vi and her staff have given me throughout the years I have been with them. The most important part of coming to a doctor appointment is feeling comfortable, and this is why I have been coming to international optometry for years. Every time I've come, Dr Le makes it a point to touch bases with me, asks me how I am doing, and catches up on things we've talked about even if it's a year or two later. I've been going to International Optometry for a little over a year. I've seen her for my regular annual exams, contact lens fittings, and another time when I had a subconjunctival hemorrhage. I've been seeing this optometrist a few times now over the years. Honestly safe to say that it's ok in regards to service and care. First and foremost, I appreciate the lady optometrist honesty. I had gone in with a pair of glasses that I had ordered online. The optometrist questioned me of where I have gotten the glasses from, then informed and warned me that online glasses put in the wrong prescription. Then it came to contacts, and where I order them from... Let's just say it's my decision of where I want to order contacts to help me save money. But when I told her where I order them, she seemed booty-tickled about it and slightly raised her voice (almost like in a demanding demeanor), as though she was already a bit irritated to hear that I got my glasses elsewhere. I understand it's a family-owned small business. But showing a little respect for your customer's choices of where they want to buy would be great. Being critical that I don't purchase contacts or glasses from this place isn't so welcoming and accepting of my choices. Is Tim L.'s review really a mea culpa? Maybe Tim L.'s "friend" is also common sense deficient. Polar opposite of my experiences at International Optometry. I am admittedly a horrible patient, because as y'all know, I work in clinical environment(s) and am neurotic about sterilization protocols and am comically phobic about cross-contamination. I digress. Okay: my entire fandamily has been going to International Optometry since 2007. Why haven't I Yelped it? Because I like to feel smug and superior and keep some things on the hush-hush list. As a general rule, I never review a personal physician or practice, and especially not in the fields in which I work. Separation of church and state, if you will. But I will make an exception here because Dr. Le and her staff have given us VIP service from Day 1 and I would not hesitate to recommend her. She has the official Mad Hattrix Endorsement (which I just created, right now) which is pretty, pretty, pretty difficult to achieve. Dr. Le and her staff are chic and fashion forward - which I, personally like in a clinician; it's a welcome respite from franchises. Would you, Gentle Yelper, ever want to have some frumpy haus frau with split ends and grown out roots care for your hair? I thought not. Same principle. * The Cadet wore funky glasses but switched to daily disposables in 2007 under the attentive eye (haha) of Dr. Le. * This is an independent, family run, family friendly practice. * While there is a steady stream of efficiently booked patients in and out the door, Dr. Le and her staff will graciously show you frames, answer questions and give expert opinions, if solicited. They never push for a sale. * Dr. Le graduated from Cal and I love that she put down roots for her boutique practice in Oak-Land, on International, no less. * In 2008, I got eyelash extensions that failed miserably and warranted a trip to the ER, where they tripped over themselves and googled a palliative solution (gentle application of olive oil) but didn't have any. The ER doc literally pulled the lashes off, manually. Individually. Along with my natural lashes. Did I mention my eyes were red, inflamed and nearly swollen shut before his "treatment"? * I made an appointment with Dr. Le and brought along the RX eye drops they dispensed at the hospital. She chastised me - rightly so - she's a specialist, after all - and informed me that the anesthetic drops could have damaged my vision or even caused blindness. * Dr. Le said if I ever had another emergency, I should call her directly and she'd open the office for me, no matter what the hour. * International Optometry is a certified retailer for a number of designer frames that will keep your peeps posh AND healthy: Gucci, Armani, Prada, Versace - and some esoteric global brands that come in limited edition as well. The speckles in the Cadet's hazel eyes are very similar to freckles or beauty marks on the skin - so long as they do not change shape or become raised. He was the one who asked, and I learned something new. My eyes are much darker, so these spots (that a large portion of the population has) may not even be detectable with, well... the naked eye, and only with the proper equipment. * VSP, Healthcare Reimbursement and 125 plans are happily accepted and copays thoroughly explained. A summary of your benefits can be pulled up and printed out for your reference. * The Cadet never leaves without a free supply of trial contacts when his RX or brand changes. * Dr. Le has a beautiful chair side manner and is very gentle - an expert in her field. The entire staff is committed to providing a tranquil and reassuring visit, every time. Every visit has been professional, thorough and informative - I know that I have invested in a highly ethical clinician and that literally makes it easier for me to sleep at night. I cannot say enough about how positive my experience was with International Optometry and Dr Le! As well, they have the best safety precautions of any business I have visited during the COVID-19 pandemic. Balancing professionalism for needed cleaning and spacing between patients in different areas, while being courteous and making sure patients didn't feel like an afterthought or uncomfortable. The Dr's office & practices seem to run like a well-oiled machine, it is very impressive! Experience: I visited International Optometry in December 2020 (having found them in a Medi-cal provider guide), they accept Alameda Alliance for Health (Medi-cal), as well as being affordable. My eye exam & 1 pair of glasses were covered through insurance, and I paid (if I remember correctly) about $150 altogether for my contact exam appointment, pair of trial contacts, and follow-up appointment. In our appointments, the Dr has such a calming, friendly personality, easy to talk to, while also being efficient and getting the job done right. I had to leave the county in less than a week, so the Dr made sure I could come back for my follow-up before I left, and made sure that I had enough contacts until my mail order arrived. She went out of her way to do this for me and that meant a lot to me. She cares very deeply about the health and wellbeing of her patients, moreso than any other eye doctor I have had. Dr Le is also an incredible person besides her work manner. I learned that as a teenager, she had immigrated across the world to the USA, then getting her education and going into healthcare, now providing affordable services and employment for her fellow Asian community and beyond. With private healthcare, it's hard to know when you're being upsold for unnecessary products and services. This business is transparent with pricing and will not try to upsell you something you can't afford. They will go out of their way to get you the best deal for your needs. Her staff were cordial, and I had a laugh with a few. They seem to be happy & respected in their working environment. I am very happy to have such a caring, friendly, intelligent, honest optometrist in my local neighbourhood. I also want to mention something. When I finished my appointment, there was a lost elderly woman outside the office who didn't speak English. When I asked for help from Dr Le's staff, they did not hesitate to try and find a staff member who spoke this woman's language. They helped her out, even though she was not a customer and they had no obligation to. Those are the kind of people that work here. Just had an eye exam here today. Like always, service was excellent. I have been coming here for years and have never been disappointed. I never have to really wait to be seen with an appt. After going to Lenscrafters for years living elsewhere I decided to come here since it's only 2 blocks from my new apartment. I came in on a Saturday and let me tell you Dr. Tuong-Vi Le was amazing! I had a new healthcare vision plan and wanted both an eye and contact lense exam; she gave me a helpful printout of my plan and walked me through the discounted pricing and everything! She's very warm and conversationable, which waiting for your eyes to dilate can be helpful. I think the level of service here is remarkably higher than a person passing by would expect. Dr. Tuong-Vi knows what she is doing! I've been going to her for years since I was in high school and she provides a very personable experience for her patients. She sees my entire family and it's like we pick up from where we left off from my last visit. She checks in to see how not only I am, but the rest of my family, which I really appreciate. She has a very specific routine for her patients and I normally spend about 2 hours here, getting my prescription evaluated, ordering contacts, etc. I've recently been diagnosed with super dry eyes and so Dr. Tuong-Vi has educated me on different ways to take care of my eyes (mostly by drinking water) and has also hooked me up with several samples of eye drops and contact solution. She values her patients and makes sure we are on the right path to a healthy life! I really appreciate Dr. Tuong-Vi and her staff, extremely better than Kaiser! Dr.Tuong-Vi was absolutely wonderful, and I will definitely be going back to her next year! My favorite thing about her is that she was both extremely knowledgeable, but also very inviting and happy to answer questions. You can tell that she loves her job, and takes it very seriously. Her office has a lot more equipment and technology than previous optometrists I've been to, and when I was visiting, she was telling me about other equipment that was coming in soon. She seems to take the time to be really up to date on state of the art machinery, which is great! I also had a really positive experience with her office staff, who were friendly and super nice. I really appreciated that both Dr.Tuong-Vi and her staff are very patient, as I usually feel rushed at most optometry places. it is terrible place i never visited before. I checked exam and bought around $300 brand name pair of glass with $150 buck deduction from my insurance, but after 3 months this glass frame is not fitting to my ear due to frame is not stable, I revisited to adjust 2 and 3 times but can't do any thing different. it costed $300 with my insurance and paid 50%. after 1yr, the color was off from the frame and looked bad frame as made in china. I have to wear my old reading glass until now as made in Italy from Kaiser 7 yrs. I will not visit here anymore unless free frame only. Sorry to say this honesty. I have been going to International Optometry for the past few years for eye exams and prescription eye glasses. Each time I have received courteous and efficient service. They have newer technology here which makes the eye exam go by fast. Very little stress from agonizing over whether lens option "A or B" and "1 or 2" is better or worse because their machines do most of the work. The selection of frames is decent and there's a frame to fit every budget. Although lens options can add up to more than the cost of the frame, just like anywhere else. read more

I went there today for a new pair of eyeglasses. It's a nice place, the staff was very friendly, knowledgeable, and patient with me while I asked a bunch of questions. The location is super convenient, and they were very accommodating with my prescription mishap (I brought the wrong one, they gave me their fax so I could just fax the newer one without coming back). I didn't get an eye exam, so I can't comment on that. I can comment on the experience of picking a frame and going over my lens options. Their frame selection is teeny. My face tends to be kind of wide, so I needed a wider frame size, especially for the plastic lenses. My last experience at Lenscrafters in Alameda was very smooth, because they had multiple sizes for the same style. International Optometry, however, didn't have many different sizes, so my big-headed choices were limited. :( I got so frustrated at one point I almost walked out to go somewhere else with a bigger and better selection. In the end, I finally settled on a frame I liked, although it did cost $70 more than I wanted to pay. The doctor was patient and explained all my lens options to me, and brought examples so I could see the differences in anti-reflective coatings, etc. All the staff got sidetracked often with chatting it up it Vietnamese with ladies that were coming in and out, but it didn't bug me because I was busy picking out frames most of the time anyway. It almost seemed too busy for the amount of staff they had, but it wasn't terrible. They did let me in without an appointment, looked up my insurance without a hitch, and I barely had to wait at all to be seated and talk to a doctor about my insurance. BOTTOM LINE: Service was nice and accommodating, but not outstanding. Frame selection was very very VERY limited. It was not a bad experience, but due to frame selection alone I would choose somewhere else next time. read more

This place is my first optometrist and I have to say this is a very Vietnamese and English speaking environment. The wait time is quite long but the optometrist will always answer any of your questions. Just make sure you ask during your appointment time because they will dedicate their time to the appointed person. The flaw once again is the wait time but it is what I get for walking in. read more

One of the original reasons I booked an appointment with IO is because they were one of the few optometry spots that accepted my insurance plan. But even if that weren't the case, I'm glad I found this place - though it has an understated appearance, the quality of the care and expectation is on par with any fancy spot in the city. Dr. Tuong is a badass lady who knows her stuff. I mean, she identified the brand and type of contact lens I was wearing my looking at them while I had them on! Although the wait was a little longer than expected, I appreciate how thorough the examination was. The post exam service was also great.
