Ellis Lake Resort - Just a cool December picture of our real log cabin!

Once you realize that, you'll be fine. We stayed in the hemlock cabin. This cabin is close to the road but we knew that so expected traffic noise. Upon arrival, we found a plate of yummy pastries inside for our enjoyment and air conditioning which we didn't expect. The host is very friendly and let us change our reservation date without charge because we had an emergency at home. Very grateful for that! These cabins are nice and it sort of feels like camping. You get a picnic table, a bbq, and fire pit. There's a huge yard with things for kids of all ages to enjoy right by the office. They thankfully sell firewood, which we bought because our gas station wood was wet. The bed was broken down quite a bit and didn't do my back any good, but if that sort of thing doesn't bother you, you'll be fine. Tight bathrooms and no table for your belongings, but it was sufficient. We took a lovely walk to the lake and enjoyed a break from the traffic noise. They have a nice deck with chairs to enjoy along with boats if you want to go out onto the lake to fish or whatever. There are many rules noted inside the cabin about linens, garbage, etc. We've never seen anything like that before. I hope we did everything correctly. We would recommend this place to someone but would suggest a cabin further back in the woods to avoid the road noise.

It was winter and we pretty much had the run off the place, so w didn't need to worry about disturbing anyone. They were kind enough too bring in a lazy-boy chair which is much more comfortable than couches that can serve as extra bedding. There kitchen was modern, which was somewhat of a disappointment, but we understand that the market demands some updates. They have some newer cabins on the property, but I sincerely enjoy the rustic ambiance of the cabin we chose. The staff was kind enough to keep the secret, even while my nosey wife tried to figure out what was going to happen and called them before the weekend. The hot tub is a fine size for even four people, and there is a sign up sheet to claim your time slot. More importantly, a small business could have just as easily said "There tub is closed for repairs" just knowing it's not cost effective to operate just for one couple coming in. But it was running, ready and relaxing! Kudo's for their honest business practice! It's also very close to downtown TC so antiquing and downtown browsing it's not too long of a drive away.

Stone Hotel is a bit awkwardly located because you cannot drive up anywhere near the hotel entrance and the hotel entrances faces away from car accessible roads - it faces Green Lake - so it's a bit of a walk from the parking lot or anywhere else a car is allowed to drive. Despite the entrance facing the Lake, most of the rooms to not have a view of the Lake or anything else. The room is small but functional and clean. There are not a lot of counters/surfaces in the room - a desk and a side table. There are no counters in the bathroom and the shower is quite small. Wifi is good. All meals are included (breakfast lunch dinner) and you eat in the cafeteria inside the Stone Hotel building alongside campers and counselors. The seating has pretty views of the Lake. The food is ok and it is buffet style so you pick up what you want from different stations. They cover all the bases by having vegetarian options, gluten free, etc. There is a nice salad bar, juice/soda/water/ice fountains, bread bins and mini fridges with stocked with whole 2% or 1% chocolate mini milk cartons, fruit cups, cheese sticks, etc. We had meatfloaf, mashed potato and green beans - no gravy (and we asked). It was smart that there is only 1 main meal choices as that would really slow down service but if your campers is a finicky eater, they're going to have to adapt and eat things like a bagel with cream cheese or oatmeal packet. Some of the food wasn't great like the frozen strawberries, canned pineapple and tasteless shrink wrapped avocado. It did leave us wishing we'd gone off campus to eat. For the location and price ($190 including taxes for a room with 2 queen beds) - it's well worth it. Many hotels in nearby Traverse City will cost your upwards of $350-$700 per night and that's if you can get a reservation - they are sold out well in advance (better rated chain hotels: Tru by Hilton, Marriott Courtyard, etc.). Plus Hampton Inn Hilton Traverse City $381.37 and Quality Inn Traverse City $365 were awful by comparison so keep perspective.

We landed on Fairfield in Traverse City. Our experience was less than we had hoped it would be. The first night we arrived at about 7pm and had 9pm dinner reservations. When we went to dry our hair, we noticed that the outlet in the bathroom didn't work, even after trying to hit the reset button. So I tried the outlet by the coffee maker so I could use the mirror, and it blew out the outlet that was for the coffee maker, microwave, and fridge. The sink was also clogged and slow to drain. We had to leave for dinner with wet hair (first world problem, I know). On our way out the next day, I informed the front desk and she said we were lucky that the maintenance man was there that day. By the time we returned, everything was fixed! Yay! However, it would have been nice to get some credit on the room rate for our inconvenience. I know it is high season, but two nights was $906.00 and way overpriced for this property. And on a random note, we parked our new van by grass and when we went to leave the next day, there were very distinct hard water deposits from the sprinkler system on the windshield and the hood. The wipers could not remove the stains, so we had to find a car wash to remove the residue. We would recommend parking on the internal spots.

Hot water worked at midnight when I checked in, but at 4:30am there was NO HOT WATER! No shampoo, no conditioner. The room smelled of old cigarettes and cheap body spray. 1* Bedbugs, poor condition, minimal breakfast…read more My partner and I made the grave mistake of staying here. The hotel was run down, dirty, and the room did NOT match the sparkling new looking ones on the Hotels.com website. The plumbing is backwards: "Cold is hot and hot is cold." There was also no full breakfast. Just a pot of coffee and pre-packaged muffins. Milk had been spilled all over the counter and coffee pot. No one was around to clean it up or put out other food. It took a long time for the hot water to come, there weren't enough towels, and a used bar of soap was in the shower. Gross.  Also disgusting: partner found an earwig crawling on the headboard. We checked the pillows and covers for other bugs and thought that was it. NO. We got mauled by bedbugs that night. It can take up to 2 weeks for bedbug bites to show on the skin. Our bites didn't appear until a few days after we stayed here. Once we realized what the red bumps on our skin were, I called the hotel to inform them they had a bedbug problem and that I wanted to be reimbursed for my stay. I was told I'd get a call back by 5 PM that day. Never happened. I tried getting a refund from Hotels.com and the agent spoke with Mike at the front desk. Because I didn't report bedbugs before checkout, Mike refused to refund me the $170 I paid and claimed Econo Lodge Traverse City has never had bedbugs before. He clearly doesn't read reviews since I've found plenty that report bedbugs! I had an allergic reaction and had to go to the doctor for a steroid shot. Save your money and your sanity. Don't stay at this hotel. It needs to be fumigated, thoroughly cleaned, and staff properly trained in customer service before guests can safely stay here. Ignoring reviews about bedbugs and calling guests liars is not good business practice.  To Mike: please learn to properly engage with guests. Educate yourself about how bedbug bites don't always show up overnight, pay attention to bedbug related reviews, and spend a night in your hotel if you think it's so safe and clean.
