I left a message, but continued to try to call every half hour or so. I finally got a text back from 'Jamie'. Jamie tried to upsell me a new system during this emergency, which I'd happily argue was caused by a Culligan installer. Jamie was great and gave advice until I told them I wasn't interested in buying a new system. Now it's been an hour since I've heard from Jamie. I got ghosted because I wasn't interested in purchasing a new system during a crisis. Update: Got a text from the branch manager around noon, where I was promised a technician around 3pm. The tech was a little early, but told me that the office could have talked me through turning on the bypass over the phone. I was charged more than $200 for this, was told that I needed to replace my water softener system. Definitely getting quotes from competitors.

At the Company request I sent them photos of the leak type of tank and they helped me turn off the bad tank and use the second tank. The Technician came out to the house with the wrong tank. They acknowledged they brought the wrong tank and needed to order and come back with the new tank. The issue I have is that I was being charged a service fee for their mistake. No work or Inspection was performed and they already knew what the problem was and what type of tank they needed. Tried to resolve the issue with them and no compromise on their behalf. Looking forward to going to small claims court on this!!!

It's a mystery why, but…read morePhelps, like a lot of techs interacting with a senior female, put the hard sell for lots of repair $$$ when they lied about their diagnosis, and recommendations for how to to fix the root cause. When the two techs came out, the lead tech said my pressure tank bladder needed air, and the switch was sticking on one side and overheating. After just going under the crawl space and futzing around (I told him there was no pressure after looking at the gauge myself), he recommended a $4,500 replacement of the pump, tank and switch - OR, I could upgrade to a better system for $6k ish. When I asked if he could just add air to the bladder with a pump so I didn't have to pay for another visit, he said oh no, he'd have to come back and also replace the switch if he did that. Funny, Phelps replaced the tank and bladder the last time this happened - 2017, I think. I wonder if I spent an unnecessary $750 on a new tank then, because they saw a "little rust" on the tank back then. Next time, I go under the crawl space to look at it myself. Ugh. Hmmm... He left me with several estimates...ranging from $700 to $6k and said I could do his recommended replacements or...do nothing until the next time it happened and spend more. They charged me $307.50 for NOTHING but a rip-off -just more money and an inaccurate diagnosis. Fast forward to a visit by JE Roberts, the next day (always get a couple of estimates) and the tech actually tested the water pressure by stressing the system - hooking up a hose to the tank - to mimic what might have tripped the water system off. He was patient, explaining why to me, and even took me under the house when I asked to show me the tank and switch (only about nine years old and he said NO bladder air issues OR switch overheating - saw it with my own two eyes). He said he couldn't diagnose the issue after testing for an hour, except to theorize that the capacitor in the pump might have a little glitch that when it hits that, the system shuts down - only every few years, and to call them if it happens again. They charged me $200 - well worth it for a honest test and feedback. Trust me - I'll call Roberts NOT Phelps. Ever. Again. Ever. I've spent way too much money "fixing" things they suggest without a real fix of the root cause issue.

My experience with Hague Quality Water of Maryland started in June 2024, and a year later I…read morecompletely regret the $1,395 I spent. I never had issues with their technicians or customer service, but I was sold an Upflow Water Neutralizing System--which I later learned is not typically recommended for well water, even though many companies sell it for that function. My house (built in 1946) has a well, water softener, and pH neutralizer. When the neutralizer failed, I contacted a few companies for estimates, and Hague's price was the best. I assumed they'd know what system my house needed and didn't think twice when they recommended an Upflow unit. The salesperson emphasized that it saved water and electricity since it doesn't backwash--something that sounded good at the time but means little when you're on a well and not paying a water bill. Fast-forward to July 2025: Hague serviced the system and added calcite. Immediately afterward, my water pressure dropped to almost nothing. The technician suspected the calcite had solidified and clogged the tank, recommending it be dumped and a sediment filter added. The problem? A Downflow system backwashes automatically, breaking up buildup and clearing sediment--an Upflow system does not. After getting two second opinions, I learned I could either replace the one-year-old tank with a Downflow system (meaning the $1,395 was wasted) or plan for the tank to be dumped and refilled every year. Another company confirmed that Upflow systems are generally unsuitable for a small household on well water because of this exact issue. It turns out many companies still push Upflow systems since they're cheaper and easier to install, and most customers don't know the difference until problems appear. I wish I'd done the research first--I would have gladly paid a little more for a system that simply needed routine servicing rather than yearly repairs. Hague may be fine for maintenance, but for installations, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere.
