I scheduled a visit with them. Their technician admitted to my husband that he wasn't sure what the issue was but recommended replacing the entire water softener system. Unfortunately, Phelps passed inaccurate information to my home warranty provider, resulting in the claim being denied. I had read negative reviews about this company and ignored them. I am a home owner in south AACo and have used Phelps Water in Edgewater many times over the years for various water issues. Until now, I have been mostly satisfied with there service, however that completely changed this week. I no longer recommend them and caution anyone before hiring them for water service. This week, I hired Phelps to pull my well pump to do an inspection. The crew arrived on time, but within 10 minutes the situation was a disaster. The crew broke my well cap and broke the safety cable. Then the crew said it wasn't their fault or they weren't responsibility for either of the issues. Regarding the well cap, both the plastic casing that holds the bolts and bolts themselves ended up being striped. As a result, the cap does not close properly. The crew stated the cap and bolts must have been broken by the folks that installed it. When I pointed out that it was their company (Phelps) that had installed the cap a year ago, still not their fault. It is still broken as I write this. As for the braided metal safety cable, the crew yanked on it so hard, it snapped. Their initial response was it was corroded and not their fault. When I asked to see the cable, they had to dig out out of a dumpster they had thrown it into. Once retrieved, I pointed out that there wasn't any corrosion and that it was a clean break from pulling on the cable too hard. No worries, I will go to the store to talk to someone in management about what happened. Same story, not their fault the well cap is broken and needs to be repaired. Not their fault the safety cable broke. Of course, they are very willing to let me spend several thousand dollars so they can fix the cable and the cap. No offer to even fix the well cap. Bottomline: I don't profess to be an expert on pulling well pumps. But even with a cursory review of online information, it becomes readily apparent that one doesn't just yank on the safety cable to get the Pitless Adapter out of the well. They did the procedure wrong according to my research. And the well cap was ruined by a Phelps technician either during installation or removal, their choice. BEWARE! That is all I can say. Without sounding like a jerk, I will simply say that I started with company in 2012. I have had great service and equipment installed never an issue. I was unaware that the local service guy that managed the Eastern Shore retired and The company has to source people from over the bridge to work on the systems now. My fault I did not ask the price for the routine service, had some serious sticker shock. A technician came out, spent 10 minutes serving the water softener system. My understanding was a UV bulb ($130) was changed as per usual. The bill came to $449.00. I hit the floor when I was contacted 24 hours later and told the price and asked to pay. I can't fathom $319.00 of work in 10 minutes on a machine that is working properly. Needless to say, I simply can't afford this service anymore and want my neighbors on the Eastern Shore to know to ask the cost before your next service to avoid my mistake. read more

On July 24th Phelps came out to my house and told me I needed a new wellhead, well pump and the risen in my water softener changed. They also told me that they did not have the right part to fix my risen tank because it was a Culligan tank. The guy told me that he used to work for Culligan and he was an expert on this. He said that he would look around his shop and see if he had a used part laying around. He said it would work fine. Well as soon as he left there was water still leaking. I called them he came back he said no, no it's just a little residue from where I was working. So I kept checking for about a week and it appeared that the water had stopped leaking. I have a memory foam pillow that I placed in between the two tanks for storage. I forgot about it because I assumed it was fixed. Then this past Saturday I was cleaning my laundry room and the memory foam pillow had sucked up probably a bucket of water. So I called Phelps explain the situation. What else could it be. The 90 days had not even gone by. They said oh well sorry your warranty has expired. I would think that they would have told me that they're used part was not under warranty. It is shocking to me that they will not come out and try to find out where the leak is coming from when that was the original work order. It's obvious to me that they did not fix the problem. I paid them over $6,000 for this work. I will never use them again. I was telling a friend of mine about my situation and she said oh my gosh I used to work there and they are horrible. They treat their customers like crap. I do not recommend this company. read more

Our water softener went out. Unfortunately, our usual plumbing company (I just redid a bathroom and refinished the laundry room) said that they don't handle water treatment. Another person referred us to Phelps. When the first guy came out, he told us some astronomical price for a softener. It was something like $1500 plus $300 for installation. I asked him how their softeners compared to a softener I could get from the store. He said that he didn't know and actually suggested that I just buy one and call them back to install it. So we did even though $300 seemed like a lot to disconnect and reconnect a single system. When the next guy came out to do the installation, he said that our unit had some water damage to the control board and wasn't working. That didn't make sense since the box hadn't a single sign of a single drop of water being on it. And the way that it is built and package would preclude water accidentally getting on the control board in transit. Moreover, when I inspected the unit, it was clear that the water on the control board was salt water. (Salt water is what is inside softeners.) Upon further inspection, there was salt water on the floor around the softener and around the top of the softener. Clearly, the installer had poured the salt water from the old softener into the new and spilled it all over the place including on the control board. We're all human and we make mistakes. Just own up to them and make things right. However, he came up with the "your softener was already damaged story to cover it up." Our other plumber has made mistakes but they stand by their work and with their customers and fix the problems. Phelps refused to admit that he made a mistake and offered to install a replacement (when we bought one) at a "reduced cost". They never said what the cost would be. It didn't matter. Phelps will never enter my house again! read more

UPDATE! I just had Midatlantic out to replace the pressure tank (NO PRORATED WARRANTEE like Phelps were going to charge me) and it turns out THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE TANK!!! It was a little low on air, that's it! Phelps would have gotten $350 for me to replace a perfectly good tank!!! That's criminal. I'm wondering how it was suddenly low on air after Phelps left here. Back to BBB to update the complaint filed. They also tried to sell me a new chemical tank, said mine was old and needed replacement. I trusted them so I was going to have it done so I got a quote from Midatlantc. It also turns it IT DOES NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED. They lied. Midatlantic could have just sold it to me because I was ready to buy a new one. They didn't, they were honest and have now earned my and relatives and friends respect and money. FIRST REVIEW: I purchased an AmTrol water pressure tank from Phelps Water Company in Edgewater on 11/4/21, less than 2 years ago. The bladder is leaking and filling up the tank. I was told by the incredibly rude girl there that they PRORATE THE WARRANTEE. Phelps said they are simply following the manufacturers warrantee and it's ONLY covered fully for the first year! After that you have to pay a prorated fee, starting at $350 after the first year for my tank (35% of the cost) after one year and it increases by $100 for every year that passes!! She said the money goes straight to the manufacture but I spoke to Jana today of AmTrol warrantee department and they said that is flat out wrong, my unit is covered for 7 years, period. They never get a cent, that's not their warrantee. She was very concerned. THIS IS NOT THE MANUFACTURERS WARRANTEE! AmTrol is replacing my unit for FREE, and of course I'm using a different company to install. I've used them for 5 years, but under this new management of Phelps, I'll never give them another cent for trying to steal my money! I've warned friends and family, some use them, but not anymore. I'm wondering how many people fell for this PRORATED WARRANTEE? I know of one gentleman that this same thing happened to him in May, but it was his well pump. Because they had no working water they were pressured to pay the prorate. He later called the manufacturer to confirm that Phelps does NOT PASS ON ANY PRORATED MONEY TO THE MANUFACTURER OF HIS PUMP! I just spoke to my manufacturer, AmTron, and they confirmed that they will replace my pressure unit FOR FREE, I'm setting up the install now. read more

About 3 years ago, Phelps installed a new well pump. The pump recently failed again. I called their office, and asked about their warranty. I was told that they provide a 1 year replacement, 2 yr limited warranty. Problem is that the pumps are warrantied from the manufacturer and can be replaced at the local reps warehouse, for FREE. Essentially they were preying on the fact that I was without water, and desperate to have the work completed, so I would just have to take their word that there was no warranty of any significance. Phelps was going to have me pay the $1700 to have a new pump installed, so that they could take the manufacturer warrantied pump back to the warehouse and get the pump replaced for free, essentially bleeding their customer for $1000 for a new pump and $1000 for a free pump for themselves. This attitude is unacceptable. Fortunately I was better informed, I had another company perform the pump install, whom honored the pump warranty even though they did not install that pump, to have it replaced at the warehouse at a later point. The new company will have my business forever and I will tell every person that I run into to stay far away from Phelps. read more

The field techs are really nice and super professional however my issue is that the customer service people have no idea what they are talking about. I had a simple issue that I could have fixed myself but customer service went on and on about how I could break all my pipes if I did it myself. I received a bill day of for $98 and I offered to write them a check on the spot - the field tech told me I could call in my payment. When I called in they told me it would be $156 so I questioned it and they said no but we can drop it to $125 with a 2.5% fee for paying with a card. I understand wanting to make money but they seem so sneaky about it. I would definitely weigh your options before settling with Phelps read more

After spending thousands of dollars and using Phelps for several years for both routine maintenance and major system updates, we have decided to change to a new company after a very troubling experience. I had a bad encounter with a technician and a follow-up call with the company that demonstrated they are unwilling to take accountability and hold little value for their customers. We have had several technicians to the house over the last several weeks to fix a number of problems with our well, spending about $3,500 so far. When they were here 11 days ago, they identified a problem in the electrical wire that runs from the house to the pump and recommended replacing it. The technician did not have the correct wire with him, so he ran a temporary line to the well and said they would come back at a later date with the correct wire and bury it. He advised me we could dig the trench ourselves to save some money, as it costs $250/hr to dig the trench. I agreed and after spending several hours digging 50ft of trenching, called them to schedule a new service date - the soonest available was in 8 more days. I did not dig the final 4 feet of the trench, because I wasn't sure where along the side of the house the wire should go. When the technician arrived 11 days after the original call, he told me it was $1050 to dig the final 4 feet! Not only is that insane pricing for 15 minutes of work, but I had already been quoted $250/hour, which I had in writing. I showed the technician the quote and told him that the last technician didn't have the correct wiring which is why it wasn't already done, but he didn't care. When our conversation escalated, he yelled at me, cursed me out, got in my face, and physically threatened me. I've never experienced such a thing in my life. When I called and explained the situation to the company, they offered nothing more than a weak apology, told me they would talk to the technician (ok, but that doesn't help solve my problem), and told me the next available date to bury the line is in 11 more days, by which time my grass buried under dirt will be dead and I'll have to re-dig the trench from water runoff. The behavior by the technician was unacceptable, their personnel clearly hold no agency to make decisions, and the lack of accountability from the company demonstrates they hold little value for their customers. After already spending $3,500 and having a written quote for $250/hr, the correct course of action would have been to honor the quote, spend 15 minutes digging the trench, and expedite the scheduling of my service. Instead, they have charged me $3,500, want another $1,000 to dig 4 feet of trench, and will not have completed the work for three weeks since I first called them. I will be using a new company to complete this work (already scheduled to come tomorrow), will be using a new company for my routine maintenance, and will not be recommending Phelps to anyone. 2 stars, because they had been servicing our system without issue for several years, but this latest incident indicates it is not a company I should continue to do business with. read more

While field staff are very nice and professional my problems worsened after each of their 3 day visits which also left me several thousand dollars poorer! Had to hire two other plumbers for 1/2 the price to resolve what they should have done properly to begin with especially putting my pump back incorrectly or not flushing the line which pushed iron through my pipes and caused the replacement of pipes and hoses to my toilet and washing machine. I was actually told to consider selling my house! Reading their fine print useless to request any money back as they are very good at noting disclaimers for no guarantee of work performed. read more

Simply called to let them know that their yearly service was not up to par from last year and got no apology, no I'm sorry and no remedy. I was explaining the situation in a calm voice and the person on the phone literally hung up the phone by putting me on hold in the middle of me talking.. Someone else picked up the phone and also refused to own the gap or seek to resolve the issue. Both people I talked to you were unhelpful & unapologetic & didn't even seek to remedy the situation. My husband and I just moved into town a few months ago, and neither of us had ever been on a well as adults. After moving in, we sort of just walked around with big question marks over our heads about the entire system, knowing only that we needed to refill the salt for our softener. A few days ago, we noticed some strange noises and a change in our water quality. This morning, I gave Phelps a call and was so quickly and professionally responded to, I couldn't believe it. We had someone at our house this afternoon, and now not only do we know how the whole system works, but it's all functioning properly, AND we weren't left with an empty wallet right after the holidays - always a huge blessing. Iron in water. System installed by Phelps during new construction Sept 2017. Had company out each year for annual inspection. Last week the system was not cleaning iron from well. Upon inspection the tech said the pistons and rings needed to be replace. Tech was professional and did a great job (5 stars for Ray), but the company would not honor the 5yr warranty stating parts were not covered. I talked to the manufacturer, and they said the company should have replaced the valve under warranty but even if they didn't the cost should have been half of what was paid. Issue: Not only did they not cover the repairs under warranty they charged double the price for parts. Inflation has not hit 100% yet. We will not use this company again. read more

Everyone we have dealt with at Phelps Water Company is professional, knowledgeable, and extremely responsive. This incredible company responds quickly when there is a water emergency, installs high quality equipment at a fair price, and stands behind their work. What more could anyone ask for? Within the last year, we have had Phelps Water Company perform work at our house three times, and two of those were due to a no-water situation. With a family of five, no water constitutes an emergency for sure, and Phelps responded by prioritizing our work; they had our water running again in no time! Most recently, I discovered we had no running water last week; I left a voice mail on their non-emergency phone number at about midnight explaining what was going on. At 6:15 am, they called me back to let me know that they had prioritized our job and a team would be at my house between 8:00 and 10:00 that morning. The technicians who showed up were personable, knowledgeable, and extremely professional. They were great guys! They had already looked up what equipment was installed in my house, realized that the well pump was 20 years old, and were completely prepared with to replace the pump when they arrived. Some quick troubleshooting led to the conclusion that the pump had finally quit, and they had a new, high quality pump installed in no time. Let's face it, customer service is a lost art in our digital age, and it is rare to find a company that is so focused on its customers while it provides high quality equipment, installed by remarkably talented technicians, all at a fair price. Phelps Water is one of those companies! It is good to know that they are only a phone call away, and I will only use Phelps Water Company for any future work that we need. This company provided the worst customer service I've ever experienced. The horrible experience started with the scheduling. When I scheduled my service I was told my tech would arrive between 8-12 so I took time from work during this window with plans to return. At 10:30 when I called to inquire about the ETA of my tech the receptionist just said oh there's no services scheduled for today until 1-4 if this doesn't work for you you'll have to reschedule. Um no thanks. You will just give me the wrong window and waste my whole day again. It goes down hill from there. The first service man shows up at 3 in an obvious rush stating he only has time to drop off materials and someone else will be coming behind him to do the work. The service man who installed two new tanks for us wrapped up within 30 minutes and wanted to run out the door without telling me anything about the new system or waiting to ensure no leaks exist in the new lines and that water pressure was satisfactory. Due to his carelessness and subpar maintenance skills one of the pipes leaked during the backwash cycle and my finished basement was flooded. He also left mud trails from his dirty feet. My insulation was flooded as well as the finished floors. A bag of salt was everywhere in the wet mess. It took over an hour for another service tech to come out and remedy the problem. It was the first man I met and he did a great job but that didn't make up for the headache, inconvenience and damage. When we called the owner to complain they played phone tag with us. Finally a female receptionist answered our call and accepted zero responsibility for their mistakes. She said, "well we sent someone back out as soon as you called." As if that made it all go away. No apologies what so ever. Extremely poor experience. Do not recommend. And from what I have heard this is pretty normal that one service man always has to follow another to fix these sloppy mistakes. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! These services are expensive. I just moved into the area and they got me set up with a new UV light and some salt for my water softener. I tried installing the UV light myself and accidentally broke the quartz container causing water to start leaking so I had to shut it off. I called them up and they had a service member (Mike) at my house within 20 minutes. Mike was very professional and worked quickly to fix the issue (service charge was ~$90, part cost was ~$70). I'll continue to buy my water products from them and if I ever run into an issue I know who to call, thanks for all the help! read more

Ask for fees when scheduling appointment. I scheduled and asked service fee, quoted $95 to service. Tech determined system not properly installed so didn't service. When I inquired on refund because service couldn't be completed was told tech called for a discount from $135 to $95. Well since I asked in advance, that's not true. A shady business move and company won't resolve by will credit if I install new system. Well another company fixed the existing system. Wouldn't recommend a dishonest company! read more
