I'm sorry I forgot to take a picture but god late night cookies slap so hard I'm crying I love warm chocolate chip cookies with milk. I wish I had a microwave in my room so I could just keep microwaving cookies. I used to think cookies were not a big deal but after failing to bake them well I have a newfound respect for cookies like I followed this fancy recipe and like the cookies were fancy or whatever but I think sometimes you just need the most basic ass cookie. Like you know those pillsbury cookie logs you cut up and then throw in the oven like that's the level we need to aspire to I think. Ok so I have lived down in the Short North for 7 years and I went to grad school at OSU for 3.5 of those years. And I am ashamed to admit that I just now recently tried Insomnia Cookies for the first time! I feel like I had heard of Insomnia Cookies a long time ago. My sister was in undergrad at OSU and I had heard her talk about it. I got the impression it was just a place that had subpar cookies catering to the late night snack cravings of drunk college students. I never seemed interested in trying them out. Fast forward well into adulthood and my boss told me that she ordered me a treat to celebrate my work anniversary-- I had been at my company for 5 years. Which happened to time up extremely well with Fat Tuesday this year. I figured if she ordered me a treat I was open to whatever it was! Soon enough, Insomnia Cookies came aknockin' and I was enamored with that fresh baked cookie smell. I opened the box and instantly contemplated skipping dinner just to eat cookies. Luckily, I managed to eat dinner and then dug in! The cookies were fantastic! She ordered me all 6 of their "deluxe" cookies: Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup, Confetti, Oatmeal Chocolate Walnut, S'mores, Salted Caramel and Triple Chocolate. They were all amazing, but I feel like Confetti was my favorite, followed by Salted Caramel. I ate half of each cookie that night and chose to freeze the remainder. The good news is that these cookies freeze really well. I ate them a few weeks later. Just took them out of the freezer overnight and ate them at room temp. They were still super soft and tasted fresh baked. All told, I'm officially a fan and think this is such a great treat to send to someone. I was very surprised and grateful for the sweet gift. Decided to go to Insomnia Cookies because I have heard a lot about how great their cookies are. After seeing for myself, I was highly unimpressed. It's downtown near campus so you have the stress of trying to find a parking spot. You walk in and it is a tiny shop. They offer very cheap quality ice cream, and cookies that taste like they are made from frozen dough. To top it off the prices are expensive. I ordered a cookie Ala mode, it was a single scoop of cheap sugary ice cream with a small warm cookie underneath for $5.30. The restroom toilet was not clean, there was "hair" all over the toilet seat. You definitely did not want to sit down if you are a girl. This isn't the first time we've had Insomnia Cookies, but it is the first time at this location. The gentleman that was working gave off the impression that we were bothering him. All of the cookies were great except for the BigWich. This cookie is supposed to be 2 regular cookies of your choice with a nice layer of frosting in the middle. Well, as you can see ours had a teeny tiny strip of frosting just enough to hold the two cookies together. Let's get real. When you have a hard core cookie hankering at 9pm it's never followed by, "Oh and I can't wait to make them from scratch!"--said no one that I know ever. So enter Insomnia Cookies near OSU campus. It's the hot cookie delivery service for anyone living nearby. Good for ya'll. I'm not in their delivery zone. Which means when I want my late night cookie snack I have to hoof it there myself. That alone itself is a strike against Insomnia Cookies in my book. Second, parking is horrible. It now becomes a 2 person job: one to drive and brave stopping in the middle of High Street (flashers on) in front of the shop front long enough for the passenger to hop out of the car. The passenger goes in to get hot cookies while the driver (me if you hadn't guessed) gets lost in the maze that is OSU campus because well, it's a campus. By the time the driver gets back to the cookie place, the passenger has happily eaten her cookie in the store so it didn't get cold since she was waiting forever. Who could blame her. So at this point this cookie better be THE most delicious, amazing, scrumptious milk chocolate little thing that has ever been created because it took forever and a day to get it. Here's the problem: well, it's just not. I honestly like warming up Sam's Club milk chocolate cookies in the microwave for 11 seconds better than the cookie I got from here. (And Sam's cookies are FAR less work.) I like a very gooey, soft, melt in your mouth cookie. Like when you pick it up it breaks apart soft. Not the biggest fan of warm crunchy cookies, not at all, actually. Insomnia Cookies are small for starters, and my cookie experience was a warm crunchy cookie. The milk chocolate morsels were melted and quite lovely. The best bite was the last bite--the very center of the cookie. But beyond that there was so little that would compel me to go through the whole big rigmarole to experience that teeny tiny center bite of loveliness. Did the cookie taste good? Uhhhh--it's a warm cookie. Yeah. Was it my favorite? Not by a long shot. Would I get it again? If they came warm to my front door, absolutely. After a depressing dinner last night, I had to find a quick pick me up. I conveniently parked close to Insomnia Cookies knowing I'd give into the temptation. I had been debating ordering these all day but never did. I got one of their deluxe cookie sandwiches, and it was pretty amazing, albeit a bit pricey at $7. The triple chocolate chip cookies were so tasty with some chocolate ice cream in the middle. So healthy. One issue I have though is that they put the ice cream between two of these really warm cookies, so unless you're eating it immediately, you literally end up with cookies 'n cream. It actually started melting as soon as it hit the cookies. I ended up salvaging what I could and using a spoon for the rest.
