As a Black woman, these repeated experiences left me feeling unwelcome and discriminated against. In addition to the customer service issues, I experienced problems with my prescription not being handled correctly, and I later developed an eye infection, which was extremely concerning and frightening. What made the situation even more frustrating was my attempt to contact the office for assistance. My calls were repeatedly forwarded or went unanswered. However, when I called from a different phone number, my call was answered. This only added to my concerns about how I was being treated. Based on my personal experiences, I felt that I was treated differently because of my race. I have submitted a complaint regarding my concerns because I believe this situation deserves to be taken seriously. I would strongly encourage people of color to carefully consider my experience before choosing this establishment. No patient should ever leave a healthcare facility feeling ignored, disrespected, or discriminated against--especially when they are seeking help with their health.

The most uncomfortable part of my experience is how both the doctors and staff address gaps in care. If you haven't been seen in a few years, they bring it up sharply--almost like you're being scolded for not coming in sooner. It's awkward and unnecessary, and it comes across as if they assume they're the only optometry office in town. Our family has gone elsewhere and had far better experiences without the judgment. The sales staff is another issue. They are very rigid and come off as rude--no warmth, no smiles, just transactional and cold. As for service follow-through, it's been frustrating. When my recent glasses were ordered, I was never called to pick them up. They acknowledged that mistake, and I was understanding about it. However, this was also the first time I've ever had an issue with a prescription. I returned to explain the problem, and they sent the glasses out to be corrected. Again, I waited for a call--nothing. After about a month and a half, I finally called and was told the glasses had been ready for weeks. I'm still using my old prescription and technically need to go back again to get this resolved, but at this point, I'd rather start over somewhere else. Between the scolding tone, lack of communication, and overall unwelcoming environment, it's just not worth it. You can absolutely find a more professional, comfortable, and customer-focused experience elsewhere. I'd recommend avoiding this place.

Then I was told I needed to download the damn app. At a glasses store. In Bakersfield. Nobody else in this city has ever told me I need to look it up myself or install an app just to be helped. That is not how this works anywhere else here. Buying glasses for a child is already hard enough. I should not have to stand there and be told you have no way of looking anything up. I said my husband had access to the insurance. That still wasn't enough. You still expected me to leave, download an app, hunt it down, and do your job for you. That is insane. If you cannot check VSP, do not act like the customer is the problem for having coverage you don't feel like dealing with. I left and went somewhere else. They used my son's insurance and I paid $72. In network. No runaround. No app. Then I turned around and spent $350 on snowboarding goggles for him. I will spend the money. I just will not stand there and be treated like I have to do your job. You advertise two pairs for $79 like that's some huge win. The price is meaningless if the second someone mentions insurance you shut down, tell them to download an app, and make the parent do the work. I will always go to the easiest place to buy glasses. I was greeted by the front desk receptionist with a friendly welcome and smile. My wait was no more than 5 mins after my scheduled appointment. I was assisted by Carmen who is one of the friendliest and most knowledgeable there can be. For my pre-exam the process was smooth as I was navigated to each eye machine. I then waited for Dr. Li and again not long. He greeted me with a great sense of humor. He is very easy going and is attentive to patient's needs. He is quick to address any concerns you may have. You can rest assured your questions are answered honestly. He is one of the most thorough optometrists I have even been around. He reviewed all the graphs and results of my pre-eye exam and broke down what exactly I was looking at. I essentially was looking at my entire eye health. This something unique and akin to what a dentist would show you when they take x-rays. I was really impressed. He was very forthcoming about what to expect as I age with my eye health. He also was able to provide a sense of understanding. I was very appreciative of his knowledge. Following my visit, I was escorted to the optician (I forget her name). She assisted me in selecting frames. She helped me with understanding what my insurance covers, and she even allowed for me to combine my wife's coverage. She was very patient with all my questions and not once I ever felt rushed. I may have kept her longer than I intended and had to depart. However, I was introduced to the person that finished up for her and that optician too (I forget her name) was very nice. At the end I was able to select a quality pair of frames that I am sure I will be happy with! From start to end the visit was one of the best I have ever had! The facility is comfortable and inviting. The entire staff I encountered were all very professional and courteous. Dr. Li was simply a joy to speak to and I am sure I can trust him with all my needs for years to come! I cannot recommend him enough. If you need an optometrists consider Li and Liao Optometry! Just a note, I saw many reviews and was skeptical at first in purchasing frames at the optometrist's office. I am someone who have been accustomed to purchasing eyeglasses from Costco. Costco offers a good selection, and the costs are more than fair. However, I can say that after my visit with Dr. Li and having the opportunity to keep an open mind to see what they offered I opted to purchase my frames from his establishment. I wanted to support not only a doctor who knows his craft but a business who provides awesome service, impeccable knowledge of eye health and second to none care. I find that when sitting with an optician I get the most out of selecting the best frames. Of course, you will see name brand choices, and this may scare some when it comes to pricing.
