I am in remiss, I meant to write a review for this lovely place sooner but was sidelined by several disruptions. Namely, I'm a spaz and I just totally forgot. Regardless, back to the point at hand. I had the nicest stay here at the end of July. I booked Sarah's Suite, which had a separate sitting room, a fireplace, a private bathroom, and a balcony. I was just here for one night on business, but the whole stay was simply lovely. The house itself was absolutely stunning; words do not do it justice. Coming from the land of stucco, cookie-cutter tract-crap developments I was blown away that such places are real and not simply Hollywood sets. WHY DO WE NOT BUILD HOUSES LIKE THIS ANYMORE?!? Riddle me THAT. The house was an enormous 3-story, heavyset granite, Gothic Revival structure. Built in 1877, it was beautiful, imposing, and lovingly restored. From the original wood paneling and wood floors, 12' plaster Florentine Ceilings, stained glass accents, tiles fireplaces, pocket doors, and original hardware it was just magnificent The owner, Dennis, took such good care of me that I felt that I was in wonderful hands. He greeted me just as I arrived, actually waiting on the front porch for me to pull up! I was the only person there for the night, which made it seem extra special. He carried my bag upstairs, provided me with china and silverware settings when I ordered a take-out for dinner to eat in my room with a work girlfriend that was meeting me there for a quick visit when I was in town. After my friend left, I drew a hot bath in the clawfoot tub, flipped off all the lights, and opened the French doors that are just opposite the tub and open up to the private balcony. I took an amazing bath while watching a distant thunderstorm light up the night sky, it was the perfect end to the day. It doesn't hurt to mention that afterward I slept like the dead in the big, comfy bed. The next morning Dennis made the most spectacular breakfast for me and treated me to a delightful conversation about the home and general area. Pro Tip: His Belgium Waffles are otherworldly. Folks, if you are gonna die and become a ghost this is the place you want to do it. It's the perfect setting for a dramatic afterlife as a 21st century ghost, eternally wandering the hallways in an Old Navy t-shirt and Kirkland jeans, looking for an outlet to charge your eternal iPhone 10. But maybe first, check to see if you can still consume those delicious waffles after death.

I visited the Goggleworks website (www.goggleworks.org) and was impressed with the options available. Via email, I inquired with my questions and was answered immediately. We ultimately chose a private glassblowing session. Remember when you are choosing to partake in these artisanal sessions, you are paying for the artisan's expertise and sharing of knowledge . So at first glance, it may seem pricey. However, given the experience as a whole, it does NOT disappoint! Our instructor Andrew was awesome! His energy and passion matched our excitement. He made our experience so much more fun with his anecdotes about the glassblowing. He explained everything in detail; we never felt rushed or uncomfortable about our skill level. There were four of us in our glassblowing session. He expertly guided us in the best artisan experience I have ever had. For our glassblowing class, we all chose to make drinking glasses. Each of us chose different color palettes to match our varying personalities. Of course, due to the nature of glassblowing, it was a very HOT experience but we were dressed accordingly and hydrated throughout. After we each had our turn, our glasses were immediately placed in a temperature-controlled device (I can't remember its name) to slowly cool the glass down and prevent cracking. We were not permitted to take the glasses home but rather had to come back another day to pick them up. After our session, we headed back to the main Goggleworks building to check out the art exhibits, gift store, and (what I'll call) the artist alley of artisans' work spaces and offices. We spent lots of time enjoying the space and speaking with varying artists. Turns out that the space is a former goggles factory that was used back in the 1800s and the space takes great care in preserving its history. It's soooo cool. It was truly enjoyable!! I highly recommend Goggleworks! This is one of my most memorable experiences!! I can't wait to see our glasses. Note: We arrived early to have breakfast at the onsite cafe, Thorn Alley Kitchen (see separate Yelp review for more details).

We walked in and the lady behind the retail/customer service desk told us about the building and where to walk since it was our first time visiting, she was very lovely! The first floor had their showing for their art show and the rest of the floors is their classrooms and displayed all their students art pieces. It is an absolutely beautiful building and all of the art is amazing. Some pieces you are able to buy which I find very cool!

This might be a long review, so please read to the end. My daughter has a cheer competition today…read morewhich has drawn in teams from all over the nearby area. I live in Arlington and she lives in Chantilly. My wife and I had planned to go up and stay elsewhere as my daughter had elected to go with a friend and her friend's mother. Unfortunately, she was unable to attend with them because she became very ill, yet still needs to compete. I called around to various hotels, but all that was left at the major chains were King beds into which a rollaway bed wasn't permitted due to fire safety concerns. So, I called The Gables and spoke to Cesar, the owner. I explained to him the situation and asked if we'd be able to stay at the hotel past checkout so that my daughter could sleep as long as possible in hopes that she'd feel better. Not only did he allow us to stay as long as necessary, but he put me in contact with his sister, Jeannette, who would be in charge when I arrived. I explained the situation to her and she was waiting at the hotel when we arrived. Immediately she took my daughter up to our room while I brought in the luggage and completed check in with her. She provided a brief tour of the area and showed me where I could find tea, hot water, and other things to make my daughter more comfortable. She also kindly offered a glass of wine since I'd just completed a three hour drive. As we're checking out today, I inquired how late we could stay and both Cesar and Jeannette said not to worry. Cesar even offered that Jeannette had previously worked in healthcare and to let her know if we needed any medicine. To say that they've been accommodating is an understatement. The team here at The Gables is the best service I've experienced in years and I'm only giving 5 stars because I can't give more. The breakfast was delicious and the hotel itself is phenomenal. Thank you so much to Cesar, Jeannette, and the team here - you all really outdid yourselves. We will certainly return!
