Bomb food, good people, all vegan! Can't wait for them to reopen at their new location!

This place was hyped up way too much for their brunch menu. 3 stars because dinner is great! For brunch it took 45 minutes to get our food and there were only two other tables in there. When we got our food the waffles were cold and the sandwich that was $13 was a tiny English muffin. They don't have a coffee machine but just pour hot water over grounds so its extremely weak coffee. They are the only place in town to have a full vegan brunch menu so props to them for that and the staff are very friendly and the whole place has a nice vibe. Go for dinner, skip out on the brunch. read more

Had the loco bowl and it was delicious. Great variety of hot sauces (including Peggy's vegan hot sauce Hottermelon). Large vegan menu for brunch and dinner. Also lots of non alcoholic drinks and some pastries they make in house. Fun vibe and friendly staff. We will come back every time we're in Salem and maybe even drive here specifically for the restaurant. read more

This cool place makes creative use of their location. Edgewater entry door leads downstairs to a variety of indoor and outdoor seating options. Salem's only fully vegan menu (!) has lots of great options. I enjoyed the Engineer Bowl and my friend had the Tofu Satay Bowl. Both were tasty and filling. Generous and unique hot sauce and condiment options. We had great service at a good price in a nice space. Worth a visit. I'll be back. read more

We loved finding The Space after shopping in Salem. We loved all of the house made snacks. We love the Before the Butcher burgers and Space Sauce for our fries. The raspberry donut was a real stand out. It was perfect and not too sweet. We can't wait for them to fully re-open after Covid 19 and see some music! read more

Was a bit concerned about location and building however this place is a gem! A must stop for vegans, gluten free, soy free, nut free individuals. I had a gf, nf,sf, vegan scone that was amazing! All items on the menu are vegan! Aesthetically this place needs some TLC however the food was amazing - I also got a Little Sammie - English muffin sandwich with chickpea sausage and cheez. All you could ask for in a dive bar, except service from the bartender... Wanted to like this place, and I love the setting, but trying to get a drink was a pain. Server couldn't find the bartender, who came in from smoking, didn't wash his hands, and told us to wait some more until he counted out for shift change? Seriously, we were the only people at the bar, and he couldn't serve us first. read more

Yummmmo! First of all, all vegan! Yes please! The owner was an absolute doll and so very accommodating! The salad she recommended was so freaking delicious I couldn't believe it! It had beets, cauliflower, cucumbers and all sorts of amazing goodness! The cauliflower wings were to die for and the donuts...omg...the donuts! Must try! I got the London fog and pumpkin spice. I'm actually not a fan of pumpkin spice and this thing was outstanding! I had a burger the first time I ate here and it was pretty great and hearty! Definitely will be returning, well I tried, but they were closed for renovations. read more

Came here for brunch last Saturday at noon and it was AWESOME! Got the smother plate and my date got the son of Salem. Vibe is laid back, music just right and the waiter was so cool. Great Bloody Mary's!!! Definitely coming back again soon. read more

My friends and I ordered some delivery the other day! It was all pretty good except we didn't really think through the fact that nachos aren't something that you should really get to-go because the chips do get a bit soggy. I walked here last night so I could try a local vegan spot while visiting. But surprise, it was closed. I checked the hours again, and it shows them as being open. I call the number and someone answers, and they say "it was slow so we decided to close early". Wow, what a way to run a business. And by the time I walked to this place, all the other places I thought about trying, will be closed by the time I make it back across the water. So I ate at taco bell. One of Salem's best "not-secret" secrets. After the set of red doors that lead to this bar, you'll find yourself welcomed by one of their many friendly staff members. In the few times I've visited, they've been nothing but kind to me. The bands that roll through are usually very talented and the acoustics sound great. (This is a little surprising based on the shape/size of the room and the lowered ceilings.) The food here is delicious. I would imagine that it isn't an easy job to design a 100% vegan menu, with gluten-free, diary-free, nut-free options that taste better than their otherwise carnivorous counterpart. My favorites? The haystack bowl and loaded nachos. There are only a couple things that I wish would be a little different -- but, then again, I may not be the target audience. There isn't much of a selection at all of beers on tap. I'd love to come in and judgmentally adjust my glasses and make weird faces when I'm tasting new and unheard of micros. Instead, the tap handle for PBR is being pulled for the majority of customers. Also, while the vegan menu is impressive, there's an awkward disconnect from other foods for those that don't have those dietary requests/needs. My inner child exploded with excitement when I heard that you can order cookies and milk. But that same inner child became very sad when the cookies are gluten-free. PBR isn't gluten-free, why do the cookies need to be? (That rhymes. Whoops.) Anyways, this place is super stellar and is ideal for anyone who likes great food and great music around great people at a great price. It's all great. read more

My family of 4 have been wanting to try the food here for a long time and decided to go today for the Brunch on Mothers Day. They obviously weren't expecting such a big turn out because they were not staffed accordingly. We were barely greeted when we walked in and we waited almost 45 minutes to even order our food. The Bloody Mary was amazing, they didn't skimp on the vodka at all. We waited another 30 minutes to get our food and they had already run out of their home fries and waffles and they'd only been open for an hour. When we did get our food, it was DELICIOUS! We were hoping for a free Mothers Day freebie or at least an apology, but that didn't happen. Luckily the food saved this review, because the service/ customer service was seriously lacking. I hope they get things figured out because we'd like to give them another try in the future. read more

Finally tried this only last night to attend son's music gig. They certainly have an innovative menu of exciting vegan food. And I know whereof I speak, having spent years as a diverse diner with a highly refined palate and knowledge of epicurean diversity. When I left the Bay Area in '96, I was forced to become a skilled, in-home chef due to lack of options to which I'd grown accustomed. Thus, I am a tough audience, & our in home dining is top-notch. I make the best, natural "clean foods" like fries, hummus, & vegan sandwiches--to the point that I dare not venture out. Lo and behold, so does this place! My family typically ventures out of the area to find more vibrant venues.  When I lived in San Jose, a place like this would be packing 'em in due to their wonderful culinary offerings.  Unfortunately, here in town one hears much buzz about the more corporate and "ready made food" establishments. You may be considering lifestyle changes and "clean eating" or you simply want to support a locally-owned joint...either way, come here for an experience that impacts in a positive way. I, for one, am going to find a way to frequent with my impressionable young teens (who have thus far been raised with high standards in ethical and nutritious eating). Places that are offering "responsible cuisine" simply need to stay in our community! **important to note- I'm not vegan, but my fam leans "lacto-ovo." Overall emphasis is on quality ingredients, made-from-scratch, minimally processed, and avoidance of harmful refined sugars & sodiums in all their terrible forms, and bad fats. read more

I don't like very much about this "venue." Twice I've gone to events and no mention of a cover charge until I get there, at which point a dude stops me on the stairs to collect an arbitrary amount now that it's awkward to walk away. The stage is also awkward with large square columns right in front so viewing comics or musicians is difficult. I can't speak to the food or service because it was ridiculously hard to order or even hear when music is playing. The building is dilapidated and restrooms dingy. This isn't a place I would go except to support the entertainers. read more

The only thing saving the space from me putting one star, is the fact the food was "okay". We ordered 2 plates of nachos one full one half (on a dead night one other table). Literally took them 40-50 minutes to bring out our overly salty Luke warm nachos. To top it all off I wanted to check how soggy my paper straw was I found a hair half in my straw that was definity not mine as I have really short hair. read more

The space offers a plant based food menu that consists of delicious and well made food. I personally have tried their BBQ soy curl sandwich several times and have never been disappointed. The drinks from the bar are fun and delicious as well. I have not made it to a performance yet, but I can imagine that it could easily become packed at such events. The atmosphere is that of an artsy dive bar and they display local artists' work regularly. I would give this establishment another star if I felt that the staff were a bit more friendly and attentive to my friends and myself whenever we come in. They aren't rude or completely negligent by any means, but they fail to provide topnotch service on a consistent basis. But don't let that stop you! Give it a try! read more

The Space has been revived and rejuvenated from its former Broadway street location, and has retaken its place as one of Salem's premier locations for live music and entertainment. The location is tucked away on Edgewater with a street entrance leading down to a lower level bar, giving a very speakeasy feel. The outside seating area has a great deck with ambient lighting, creating a relaxing comfortable atmosphere. The indoor/outdoor expanses make it very versatile, giving the option to be submerged in the entertainment, or take a moment to enjoy the calmness of the outdoor area. I highly recommend checking out one of their many events (usually listed on their Facebook page), you'll get to experience some great local talent and support a budding local business. read more

If you are wanting a place that makes you feel like you are Norm from Cheers from the moment you walk in, then The Space, and their variety of events, is the place where it feels like everybody knows your name. The location is very unassuming. The staff are welcoming and friendly... and this is coming from an introvert. The venue is spacious and accommodating. This isn't a space where 300 televisions are broadcasting sports so loud you can't here your own eardrums burst 24x7. This isn't a space where snobby staff think you're poser because you don't look like them. This is The Space filled with real people... of real people, for real people... This is The Space; a place of welcoming. Upon first walking in the door I was made to feel welcome and included. I was introduced to others that otherwise would have remained strangers at the end of the evening and I was given a tour of the place. My second time there I was sincerely welcomed by owners; as in welcomed like we were long time friends and they had a full house for their show. The Space is engaging. The Space draws you in. This place fills the void of a music venue in salem. Its a basement bar with great patio space. They have a nice selection of beers and liquor and a few good eats to choose from. They are in their early opening stages and making additions and changes to their offerings as they learn what the customers want. They have live music...to poetry... to record vinyl exchanges... a big variety of events and open friendly owners who will listen to what their audience likes. read more

The food here is awesome, regardless of if you are vegan (my wife) or not (my self). We went for the first time last night as part of a birthday party, and we will be coming back. I highly recommend their Classic burger, and the Satay Tofu is awesome as well. The staff is super friendly and real.
