And I called one other company for a second bid. David showed up in time for our appointment, and his explanation of the problem (80 year old mortar in our brick house was falling out). The previous owner had gotten some of it repaired. That mortar was failing, too. I was particularly concerned because one pillar that carries a heavy load was cracked so badly (see photo) that you could see daylight through it from top to bottom. David explained why it had failed, and how the repair work someone had done years ago made matters worse. His bid that was about the same price as the other firm, but his explanation -- and the bid itself -- were so clear that D. Masonry was my obvious choice. He provided me with proof of insurance, too, a request the other company ignored. They lived up to my high expectations. Watching them work, I realized that tuck pointing is a highly skilled craft, practically an art form. They took the time to mix and try a range of mortar colors. With their help, we selected the one they advised. Now that the new mortar has completely dried, I can see it is a perfect color match. The pillar I was so nervous about? They elaborately jacked up and stabilized things, so they could remove the pillar, which they disassembled completely, laying out all the bricks (with all the old mortar removed), so they could put them back exactly as they were, only sturdy now, and good as new. Masonry repairs -- done well -- simply disappear when the work is done, right? As long as I own this house, my gratitude for this job-well-done will live on.

The biggest concerns were the lack of proper…read moresubgrade preparation, the lack of transparency, and the difficulty getting clear, consistent answers throughout the process. I specifically chose and paid extra for high early cement because my goal was to regain access to my garage parking as soon as possible. I expected clear guidance on the product's performance and realistic timelines. Instead, I received conflicting information ranging from not being able to walk on the concrete for 48 hours to not being able to park on it for anywhere from 2-10 days. When I asked for clarification, the responses were vague. Liftech's production manager stated, "There are no specific specs for high early since it is mixed with concrete at the plant," and also said, "There is varying information because no concrete is created equally." I would expect concrete professionals and concrete plants to have more consistent information regarding the product being installed. Another major concern was the subgrade preparation. Liftech subcontracted the concrete work, and when the crew arrived, they did not even have a compactor onsite. I asked the workers if they planned to compact the subgrade, and based on their responses and actions, it did not appear that proper compaction was part of their plan until I contacted their Project Manager and requested that a compactor be brought to the site. A video documenting the work can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/YBubb-Wx-ac. In the video, it appears that only about 50% of the area was properly compacted, with some areas not compacted at all. The subbase also does not appear to have been watered down as part of the preparation process. The video speaks for itself regarding the preparation that was completed before the concrete was poured. For a project of this size and cost, I expected better communication, transparency, and attention to detail. Unfortunately, my experience left me questioning both the workmanship and the information provided throughout the process.

Before he got back, his crew had started manually removing some of the old concrete because they didn't want to delay the progress. One of our biggest projects to tackle was the fireplace. We envisioned not only keeping it wood burning but making the room feel less like a cave and more bright, cozy and welcoming. We contacted several fireplace vendors and found one that helped with the pieces, but for our actual project we were told "you need a mason." So to the search engines we went. After talking and meeting with a few and getting some quotes, we chose to go with Adkins Masonry and are glad we did. From the beginning, Tommy was fantastic to work with. It's clear through conversation that he's passionate about what he does, and equally clear that he's very talented after looking though his portfolio. In the grand scheme of things, our project was pretty minor compared to a lot of jobs he does, but he treated us as if ours was the most important one whenever we met or discussed it. It was about a year in the making. We had an initial meeting to suss out our vision and come up with a plan. Then my partner and I took our sweet time to make sure we found the right natural stone for the look we were going for. We then started the demo, which was done incrementally as our project evolved over time. It took a while for the stone and hearth to come in, but once it arrived, Tommy was able to really get going. Since we were keeping it wood burning, and since Tommy is a mason, we ended up using brick rather than wood to frame it out which helped insulate it and make it safer. He also placed insulation over the vent, which did not exist on the original, to help protect the electrical and cable wires that ran behind it. We debated putting the TV over the mantel vs off to the side, and we ended up running power for both options to future proof it. Once the brick was laid and dried, he and his crew installed the concrete mantel and the giant hearth (which I cannot even begin to tell you how heavy it was). Next, he began to overlay the stone, first mortared into place, and then grouted to finish with the right color. It was really crazy to watch how each step completely transformed the project again and again. We are so happy with the way it turned out. The room still has a ways to go (floors, trim and oh, furniture) but I cannot recommend Tommy and Adkins Masonry highly enough. He was a complete pleasure to work with.

When he fertilized my lawn, instead of applying fertilizer only to the grass, he drove the fertilizer spreader all over my new concrete walkways, leaving dozens of ugly rust stains everywhere. I have spent hundreds of dollars on power washing and other attempts to resolve it and such attempts have made the problem worse, so I now have rust + discoloration all over my walkways, which is a major eyesore. It will cost me many thousands of dollars to fix this problem that Dan caused, since I will need to rip out and reinstall 3 new concrete pathways and a giant patio. Dan's response was extremely disappointing, he did not take responsibility and there was 0 concern or effort to fix the problem. I would caution against using Dan if you want someone who is thoughtful and careful on your property. I hope this review will ensure this doesn't happen to anyone else.

NOTE: I don't generally post reviews and I seriously debated about writing this one, but the work was SO BAD that it had to be redone, and people should be aware of the work they can expect if they hire Golding & Golding Hardscaping/Landscaping. REVIEW: Bryan gave an estimate for two jobs (a bird landing and a xeriscaping project). He didn't ask a lot of questions, which had me questioning his level of expertise, but I didn't want to spend a lot of money, so when I received his reasonable quote, I decided to hire him to do the landing. If that went well, I would hire him to do the xeriscaping job. Bryan estimated the job would take him 4 hours to complete and expected to be done by noon that day (6/25/2025). Although it took him 2 full days to complete the work, he did not change his estimate, which I did appreciate. He laid a new gravel base, and compacted it with a gas-powered plate compactor, but did NOT use screed rails--which most professionals use--to level the sand. When asked about leveling the sand, he said he "levels as he goes." I should have asked him to level the sand, but I accepted his response and let him continue. He completed laying pavers for the 5' x 5' section on the Day 1. The last 3 sections would be laid on Day 2 and would be finished with polymeric sand. We had a very heavy rain after the Day 1 and since polymeric sand is water-activated, I texted Bryan my concerns about how that would affect the polymeric sand application. We exchanged a few texts and his final response was, "I know what I am doing and this is what I do for a living. Can I just have some space to get the work done please. Thank you." Since he clearly had no interest in addressing my concerns and he obviously didn't appreciate my questions, I should have fired him then, but the work was half done, so I let him continue. We also had a brief, somewhat confrontational phone call in which he again ignored my concerns. By the time he finished, I just wanted him gone, so I gave the landing a cursory inspection, paid him via Zelle, and walked him out. It wasn't until after he left, that we really inspected the work. It was AWFUL! One section sloped up, another section sloped down, and one section was mounded (pics attached). While it wasn't highly visible to the eye, it was like walking on an undulating fun house walkway. The polymeric sand wasn't compacted into the pavers to ensure that the joints were completely filled, so cracks were visible around most of the perimeter pavers, one of the pavers was cracked, and the pavers along the perimeter of the largest section were crooked. He didn't blow off the excess sand to prevent it from hardening on the surface. I should have contacted Bryan and had him redo the pavers (or demanded a refund), but he clearly DIDN'T know what he was doing, and wasn't open to questions. Since I didn't want to deal with him ever again, I tore up the three smaller sections, leveled the sand using screed rails, and reset the pavers myself. I left the larger section alone, but it will eventually need to be redone. So, now I'm out the $530 I paid to Bryan, plus the additional cost of buying more materials to do the job correctly. Not to mention two days of my own time redoing the work of a hired contractor. Needless to say, I did not hire him to do the xeriscaping project and I would strongly advise against hiring him for any technical projects that involve leveling or patio pavers.

Ground Up Exteriors and Brad F. were incredible to work with after my home was hit by a major hail…read morestorm. I needed a full roof replacement, window and screen replacements, painting, and new gutters. Brad handled everything, including help with the insurance claim and supplements, and made a stressful situation easy and comfortable. This was my first major insurance claim and repair job and I was nervous going in, but Brad made things so EASY! He was always in touch, answered all my questions (and I had a lot), and kept things moving on schedule. The crews were professional, on time, and did top-notch work. Cleanup was spotless, it was like they were never even here! Brad truly went above and beyond, I can't even explain it!! He's amazing!
