He did some exterior tuckpointing, matched brick 1947 brick for a slight exterior alteration, and fixed some interior cracking in plaster with concrete block underneath. I met the owner, David, when he was doing some work for a neighbor. The neighbor spoke highly of the experience and the result, so I called the company. And I called one other company for a second bid. David showed up in time for our appointment, and his explanation of the problem (80 year old mortar in our brick house was falling out). The previous owner had gotten some of it repaired. That mortar was failing, too. I was particularly concerned because one pillar that carries a heavy load was cracked so badly (see photo) that you could see daylight through it from top to bottom. David explained why it had failed, and how the repair work someone had done years ago made matters worse. His bid that was about the same price as the other firm, but his explanation -- and the bid itself -- were so clear that D. Masonry was my obvious choice. He provided me with proof of insurance, too, a request the other company ignored. They lived up to my high expectations. Watching them work, I realized that tuck pointing is a highly skilled craft, practically an art form. They took the time to mix and try a range of mortar colors. With their help, we selected the one they advised. Now that the new mortar has completely dried, I can see it is a perfect color match. The pillar I was so nervous about? They elaborately jacked up and stabilized things, so they could remove the pillar, which they disassembled completely, laying out all the bricks (with all the old mortar removed), so they could put them back exactly as they were, only sturdy now, and good as new. Masonry repairs -- done well -- simply disappear when the work is done, right? As long as I own this house, my gratitude for this job-well-done will live on. read more

Together we found the best option and Dave kept me updated with photos and any problems they discovered once the carpeting came up. He was able to patch the floor and then paint it so it looks very good - much, much better than what was there before. Not only did they find the entry point from outside and seal it off, but they re-mortared the entire inside portion of the chimney in a lighter color that brought new life to our great room and brings us joy every day. I contacted the David by phone July 3rd and told him about my brick patio repair project. He said he would come assess it and gave me 3 days he thought he would be available to come see the job scope and discuss. He asked me to text my availability on those days and I texted him the info right back. He replied he would check his schedule after the holiday 4th and get back to me. I did not hear back. On July 10th I texted him and asked if he still might be interested in coming to assess my project. I never heard back. It's fine if you changed your mind about interest in a project. I was selling my 1895 Victorian in Highlands, and needed a COMPETENT mason fairly quickly. One masonry company I tried was 5 weeks out, and that was just to come out for a quote! So I searched around: A general contractor friend of mine recommended Dave's company, and so I gave him a call. Things got rolling soon after. My job was varied, and involved filling cracks, some tuckpointing, and restoring the 'crown' on a chimney. The tricky bit was that the chimney was about 3 stories up. Dave patched that up using just a ladder (no scaffolding) - very impressive. Dave's costs were VERY reasonable and his crew efficient. They worked harmoniously with some of the other people working on the property. I'd have no hesitation working with Dave again. read more
