I recently completed building a house with Van Matre Construction and I was very happy with every aspect of their performance over the 14 months it took to complete. The house was a spec house with lots of architectural details inside and out. During the bidding/pricing process he worked with our architect to improve the project with several important "value" suggestions. The project was bid out to several contractors and Van Matre was clearly the best value. We entered into a fixed price contract during a period of escalating prices, and very tight availability of labor. The project was completed for that price. We did have several change orders, which were truly "changes", those change orders were priced very fairly. I never got the feeling he was "sticking it to us" on the change orders; an experience I've had before. Working with Brady and our Superintendent was very easy. They were very diligent, and followed through with questions very quickly. The quality of work was outstanding. All of the employees and sub-contractors were very professional and courteous. They kept a clean and neat job site. The few quality issues that came up were taken care of with no arguments or drama. After the project was finished we did have a small punch list. The items were mostly small finish items that were quickly dealt with. Overall would I hire Van Matre Construction again? In a heartbeat!! He made this challenging project fun and easy. read more

We hired them to reinforce the foundation where a few years before some tunnels had been dug through the soil under the footings to put in some new pipes. This is an old brick house and the footings are several widths of brick laid directly on the soil, not concrete. The reinforcement is to pour some concrete walls under the footings to support them and to stabilize the soil walls of the tunnels. They also poured concrete to stabilize another area where soil had been eroding under the footing. We also had them remove an unused brick planter next to the wall. The estimator, Lance Heimes, did a very thorough study of the area and then carefully described to us the recommended work. Because of his attention to detail and good explanations I had a lot of confidence in his recommendations. The work went smoothly and looks good upon completion. The weak point with this company was communication. I had to call them up to find out when the work was scheduled, and even then we were never sure when the workers would show up. They also sent me the final invoice for the work when the work was only about half-done, rather than upon "substantial completion" as provided in the contract. They did finish the work a day or two later, so it worked out OK, although for a while I was worried that they had forgotten to finish the work. read more

These guys were awesome! The job took several months, but the result was so cool looking, even the other contractors on site commented on it. It was not an easy issue they were dealing with. I own an historic house in Boulder, built in 1903, whose entire corner, including the foundation, had begun to slide down a hill--by something like a couple of feet. They were able to dig underneath the house and pour new footings, then cut out window and door openings into a degrading stone wall and finally lift the house by several inches. And, it looks fabulous! Oh! Also, they stayed within budget--no "change orders." I would recommend them in. a heartbeat! read more

Van Matre was truly outstanding from start to finish. Brady gave us an honest assessment of our situation and a number of reasonable options to choose from. He taught us a lot about foundations, and spent lots of time with us as we tweaked and tuned the plan. They were able to get us on their schedule fairly quickly, and they finished the job in about a week, which I thought was amazing. Willis, who led the crew, was super nice. He recognized our interest in the details of what they were working on, and kept us informed the whole way through. Joel, Wheelz and Adam were awesome too. So I worked with Brady Van Matre for many years and can not say enough good things about him and his company. Brady treats all of his employess with respect and is very fair. In return, employess are very happy and do great work. Brady also truely cares about every project he works on no matter how small or large. Steer clear! Brady is nice but he has no involvement after signing the contract. His sub-contractor that did our home is sloppy and cuts corners everywhere possible. I can't even count all of the errors he made on our home. It caused delays in completion. Months after the remodel, I'm still finding issues including phone jacks cut during construction, gaps between cabinets that are now falling...the list goes on. read more

They did a lot of work on our new home, including repair to the foundation, correction of problems with the drainage on our property, and several remodeling projects. The cost was very reasonable. We hired Van Matre Construction to do foundation repair for our home in June. We had to wait a few weeks for them to come out here and Lance set the date for July 22nd, which was last Monday. We hired workers to move our patio furniture, built a temporary fence to keep our dogs out of their work area, etc. They never showed up. Not a phone call, text, email. Lance would not return our calls and email. I saw MS in Boulder's review; the same thing happened with them. Our job was "only" $11,500 and as with the other homeowners, we think they just took a more lucrative job. We now have to wait 2 months for another company to put us on their schedule and have to move everything back the way it was in the meantime. This is the most unprofessional thing we've ever seen as homeowners. Lance has no integrity or even the common sense to know what a bad business he is running. As a business owner myself, I can't imagine treating customers like this. read more

We are so grateful to Brady and his team! An engineer friend recommended him, and I'm so glad he did. Brady's quote was reasonable, but not the very lowest. After a bit of talking through the project with him, it became clear that he would do a more thorough job and fix the problem correctly the first time. We couldn't be happier with the result. We've now used him twice, initially for a smaller job and recently for a larger project. Both times, we've been thrilled with the level of service, patience, and attention to detail. Brady's kindness and good sense of humor got me through the inherent stress of having this type of work done. He explained the timeline clearly, and finished the work on schedule and budget. Incredibly disappointed- Van Matre gave us a quote for a job last August and we accepted their bid. 8 months and multiple phone calls later and I cannot get them to actually come out and complete the job. I went with them initially because of their good reviews, so figured I would post my experience. Ours was supposed to be a one day job for $5000-$6000. I have spoken to the owner Brady several times. When I spoke with him in October he said they would schedule us in December. December 2018 he told me that they got some bigger (presumably higher paying) jobs after they gave us our quote, and that they were going to do those first and bump us back, but that were were in line to get our done in hopefully January. They didn't come. I spoke with him again in April, and he left me a voicemail saying he apologized and that they dropped the ball. However, when I got a hold of him and asked him for a date, he ultimately still wouldn't give me one. He said, again, that they have gotten additional bigger (that still says to me higher paying) jobs so they are going to do those first and bump us back again, but that he would take a look at his calendar and that I should call him the next day for a date. I was purchasing an older home in Boulder and the inspection revealed a drainage issue in the basement. I called Brady on a Tuesday to inquire about a repair cost estimate and he promptly scheduled a site visit for the following Thursday. Not only was Brady extremely prompt in responding to my inquiry, he was also very reasonable with what he prescribed. He is extremely trustworthy and professional.
