This shop is SO cute and convenient for working and holding business meetings! We used to have monthly meetings there for a freelance job I had before. The tables and booths are big enough to fit a group of people. We usually had about 6 of us and the tables were comfortable and had plenty of outlets. It is a very chill atmosphere and would be a good spot to read a book too. I love their coffee, bubble tea, and pastries. I haven't tried their bahn mi or bowls because oftentimes they are sold out later in the day. When we would have morning meetings, I would get either an almond milk latte or sometimes I would add lavender. My colleague would always get the french press coffee and we would laugh as he would carry a full pot of coffee over to the table. If you are planning on working there for a few hours, the french press might be a good idea! I love their coconut bubble tea and taro bubble tea. You pick green or black tea, then your flavor, then if you want boba or jelly, and pick your sweetness level and milk. I LOVE that they let you pick the sweetness and the milk. This most recent time I was super bummed they were out of boba, so I tried something a little different. I got black tea with taro flavor, lychee jelly (wow-addicting) with almond milk and 0 sweetness. I knew it would be sweet from the lychee jelly. It was really good even though it didn't have the chewy tapioca pearls. They also have great pastries. I'm not sure where they get them from, but they are always fresh! The employees are always very friendly and willing to suggest things on the menu. They have a small section for outdoor seating too. What brought me here was the really cool "coffee passport" someone gifted me for Christmas! I was so happy I came as soon as I entered the place... the coffee shop has ample room, especially on a beautiful sunny day. From a side area with twinkle lights, an w covered patio, as well as a very spacious inside, all with outlets. I think it's very convenient if you want to do work there (which I did). Very cute place! Nice decor and seating - it's a cool touch that some of the tables are old Singer sewing machines. The banh mis are decent but the meats aren't as flavorful as you get at really good banh mi places. I wish they had the classic traditional banh mi with pate and cha lua, but their offerings are not bad. The cold brew Vietnamese coffee is an Americanized halfway between ca phe sua da and American iced coffee - I'd recommend getting their actual ca phe sua da. read more

I wasn't really sure whether this place was a coffee shop or a delightful Banh Mi kitchen, but either way -- the coffee and banh mi were both really delightful. I'd skip the Pho next time. Vietnamese coffee is great! Nice and refreshing and they offer it in both a freshly brewed and cold brew option both of which are pretty good. Three hot option does take a while (~10 minutes). I had high hopes for the banh mi from Ineffable Ca Phe. I love the combination of flavors from seasoned meat, vinegary pickles, cilantro, and spicy sauces in a fresh baguette. It's the perfect takeout food! However, I was disappointed by what I got here. I ordered two banh mi -- one banh mi thit kho (braised pork belly), and one banh mi thit nuong (grilled pork). For the price of $8.50 per sandwich, I got untoasted baguettes with a laughably small amount of meat and vegetables in each one. In total, I would say about a tablespoon of meat in each half of a sandwich, with a few sprigs of cilantro and equally small amount of pickled vegetables. Jalapeños were on the side, as I had requested. It was the ratio of filling to bread that bothered me most, and not the flavor. The baguettes were even hollowed out on one side, to accommodate the extra air in the sandwich. Aside from this, the little meat in the grilled pork banh mi was also quite dry. The pork belly banh mi was less dry due to additional sauce. Flavor was lacking. Non-food observations: Take-out only due to the ongoing pandemic, so no comment on the service. There was one person manning the cash register and making sandwiches on the afternoon of my visit. It is very nice that they have a two car lot in front, but I imagine it gets crowded under normal circumstances. Verdict: I don't know what the bar is for this type of sandwich in Pittsburgh, but their banh mi is decidedly below average. I feel like I got extra unlucky with the banh mi today -- it could have been because it was takeout, maybe they were understaffed, or both. It doesn't account for the sandwich being bland, though. Ok as a a second gen Vietnamese person that grew up on the west coast I've had my fair share delicious banh mis that costs as much as a cup of coffee. By Pittsburgh standards this is pretty good and makes for a decent lunch however did not meet my expectations for what a banh mi should be. The bread was ok, but lacked the crunchy outer shell and fluffy interior of a true banh mi. The jalapeños were not spicy at all and there wasn't even cilantro. The pickled carrots were too thin and didn't include daikon. The pork belly meat was quite good and absolutely melted in your mouth but could have been marinated in more spices and more fish sauce. I know there aren't a lot of Vietnamese places around here so I know I can't be too choosy, but I think I'll save my banh mi cravings for when I'm back at home. read more

The password is posted where the trash cans, napkins, sugar and cream are. How is the food? The menu is perfect! Not too overwhelming nor is it limiting. The Banh Mi sandwiches are made with care and taste super fresh! You can choose among 4 types! And the drinks? Honestly the coffee is so good! It definitely tastes fresh and authentic, which means a lot coming from me because I'm super picky with my coffee! I got the Iced Vanilla Latte (as I was craving something sweet). You can ask for skim or whole milk. They even sell Vietnamese Drip Coffee! And they grind their beans to order! The tables are all on very old/antique sewing machine stands. the booths seats are a little higher then a normal chair but comfy. The table was about the height of a computer table so easy to type but I did find myself leaning forward for some reason. Guess I like a harder backed chair to type when using my computer. Ah, this place is so awesome. My go-to spot when I need to do some work on the computer or meet with a colleague. I usually get the Thai iced tea in the summer and or a chai latte in colder months. Nice indoor space with power outlets for laptops or devices to plug-in. Usually you'll find people quietly studying or working. The pork belly rice bowl was delicious! I'm glad they have food options, specifically gluten free... Which you wouldn't expect with these dishes (that includes soy most of the time). I also do not like coffee and usually never drink it, but believe me when I tell you, get the Vietnamese Coffee. It is a cool process to watch and it is delicious! They really do have a wide selection of coffee, tea and non-caffeinated beverages. I ordered a lemonade the last time around and it was fresh and tasty. My only critique is that the booths are really high compared to the tables. Why does this matter? When you're working on your laptop, it is a back breaker for sure. Crouching over for hours is not good for anyone! I would hope at some point they'd raise the tables (I feel like that's the easiest option?). It's cool they're old sewing machine tables though... There's a cute little pop-up home goods shop now within the cafe. I really loved looking around and found some items I'd love to come back to purchase. The proportion of coffee to condensed milk was on point. In my last trip, I also got the chicken pho and bubble tea. They were both good too. Believe it or not, I discovered Ineffable after attending a wedding here a few years ago, which was complete with banh mi sandwiches and an open bubble tea bar. It was a lovely, intimate reception. The menu is simple but affordable and delicious. The banh mi can also be made over rice instead of bread if that's more your speed. And the drink selection is incredible. Lots of coffee and latte options, milk options, and in my opinion, the best bubble tea in the city that I've had. I make a point to stop here whenever I'm in the area. It never disappoints. My only complaint is the parking situation if you're getting there by car. I usually do street parking on 39th and walk up to Penn. There is a bus stop nearby. read more

I was a little nervous to try another Banh Mi spot in Pittsburgh since my last was mediocre. But I thought this was different than what I'm used to back home in Boston so I gave it a try. The coffee wasn't as rich as I'd like because it was the cold brew but I assumed I had to wait for the drip if I wanted it over ice. So I settled for the cold brew but I don't think it's worth $6.5, maybe $5 max. I make Thit kho at home but never thought of it in a banh mi. It was good. The jalapeño had a spice and the mayo made it more creamy which I love. Bread was crispy enough and the meat to bread ratio was good. If you want to sit outside to enjoy the good weather on a Spring or Autumn day, there is an outdoor sofa you can sit on as well as a bench with a low-lying table and several desks. Indoors, you can also find a sofa and armchairs around a coffee table, as well as several booths. Pretty much every type of seating preference is accommodated here, which is an enormous advantage. There is also a leave one/take one bookshelf open to anyone who drops by. Customer service is usually highly quick and efficient, so don't anticipate that you will interact or converse with this cafe's serving staff at any length. The speed of service makes this an excellent place to go if you need a tea or coffee in a relative hurry, although the comfortable seating also makes this a good place to stay a while. The food served is generally in light quantities and doesn't lack in nutrition, making this one of the better guilt-free options if you are a diner who is sensitive to how many calories you take on. The principal dishes served are variations on rice bowls and banh mi sandwiches. There are specialty coffee beverages served in the Southeast Asian style (which is to say with lots of sugar and cream), but you won't have any issues ordering your coffee black: just be aware that the prices on coffee beverages here can be relatively steep. One major issue, thus the only 4 out of 5 stars - there is no recycling for food and beverage containers, which are almost all made of non-recyclable/non-biodegradable plastic. Located on a stretch of Penn Avenue where parking hasn't been an issue but you might drive by as its tucked inside being 3-car parking spots in from the street. Great coffee, bagged tea, bubble tea, fresh squeezed lemonade/orange juice and BYOB after 5 pm. Vietnamese cuisine food selection is tasty plus muffins, cookies, and local small business Pigeon bagels. Tables and couches inside and outside. Great sized booths, outlets, and free wifi. We stopped by here for a late breakfast early lunch on a Sunday morning. Got easy street parking. When you get in you can see it's a pretty cool place to stop by. The cappuccino was almost $5 for a very small cup and it was just ok too. I'm sure their other coffee taste great and the price isn't as high. My wife got a breakfast Bahn Mi and I ordered a veggie Bahn Mi with fried tofu. My wife liked her breakfast Bahn Mi and my Veggie Bahn Mi was excellent. The tofu and other ingredients were really good. I probably needed to put some siracha on it or maybe a little more mayo cause it was a little dry but easily fixed. Coffee and bubble tea review: I've only had the Vietnamese drip coffee and bubble tea here, but I'm eager to try the banh mi! Vietnamese coffee - delicious, really strong, so the condensed milk it comes with helps break down the boldness. I also asked for a cup of ice (thanks for the tip, Yelp!), and had my coffee iced instead of hot. It's on the steeper side in terms of $, but would recommend if you're staying in there to work/eat, since it takes time to steep. Bubble tea - surprisingly good! I had almond milk tea with boba, which lived up to my expectations. They definitely use powder for some things, but I liked how thick and flavorful the tea was, not watered down like a lot of other places. The variety of flavors and toppings is great. I came mid-afternoon on a Sunday and they were running out of a few things, but the baristas made sure to let me know once they heard we were ordering bubble tea. Side note: their boba isn't sweet/soaked in honey, which I prefer, but still was good boba consistency! Atmosphere - overall, great place to study/work/eat. Love the antique sewing machine tables, which were large enough for a friend and I to sit at and work.
