Bilo don't play that. While "honest mechanic" seems more an oxymoron these days, Bilo is as honest as they come. He doesn't flip out if you want to bring your own parts (bringing the wrong part just means delaying your repair). He also will show you where things are broken, where service technicians have screwed up (thanks Jiffy Lube!) and keeps your budget in mind when coming up with repairs. Plus, he has the skill and knowledge to make repairs, not just swap parts. If you're looking to be charged 200% markup on parts on top of $85/hr labor by all means go to one of the franchises in town. If you want a fair price and a competent, honest mechanic Bilo is your man.

They've serviced my car to them for several years now and they have been good about diagnosing and correcting problems, have told me clearly when a problem is beyond them (my Prius was having problems with the big battery), have suggested good alternatives to the town's exorbitant Toyota dealer when they couldn't make the repairs. If the part is going bad, they show it to you, explain how it should work, show you where the problem is with its functioning. Their prices are great.

The man I met told me he had been working there for his family over 20 years, and it's hard to find a better local resource than this for the price of a small tip and your gas. The station was very accessible and neatly kept right before the heart of downtown Amherst. You can pull in from either direction--just know what side of your car has the gas cap! All in all, I would tell international travelers, locals, students, and people of all ages and walks of life to go here. I'm certain they'll make you feel welcome and answer your questions, even in the bitter cold. Again, for full service gas, the price is low so mind to tip your attendant, 10% is a good amount and fits the current era we live in. The days where a single dollar was a good gas station tip were at least 30 years ago. :)

My band…read moreplayed a show in Easthampton on a Thursday night, and on our way to the show, our transmission started throwing error lights. We tried that night to hook it up to the computer at an auto parts store and pull the codes, but our van turned out to be too old for their computer. The next morning, we were facing a seven hour drive to Buffalo, and we didn't want to get on the road without knowing what was wrong with our transmission. So...we were in an unfamiliar town with vehicle troubles that we needed fixed in a hurry. Usually, this is a recipe for getting price gouged, but this was not the case at Northampton Transmission. After calling around, we found these guys, and explained our situation. They told us, "we're backed up today, but bring it in and we'll get our computer hooked up and let you know what we can do." We pulled into their garage around 11. They were telling the truth about being backed up; every lift was occupied, and there were many more vehicles awaiting service in the lot. Nevertheless, they diagnosed the problem, bumped us in line (they even took another vehicle off the lift that was halfway repaired), and took care of our issue. We were back on the road by 1pm. The entire time, they were totally respectful and easygoing. When it came time to pay, I noticed that they had all their prices on the wall by the desk (flat fee for a diagnostic, hourly labor costs, etc...). I quickly checked the price they were charging against what was on the wall, and THEY DIDN'T EVEN CHARGE US EXTRA FOR THE RUSH JOB!!! How cool and honest is that?
