Indian Valley Meats was recommended by a local for us to check out and so my husband and I made a visit. Indian Valley Meats specialize in different types of game meat like Elk, Caribous, etc. But most of the meats are in jerky or vac- pack sausage form. We were really hoping for there to be fresh meat here available for purchase. However, by the register, we saw two large plastic containers of fresh meat (not sure what) just sitting out. There were also flies in the store. It surprised me that the meat was not kept on ice and not covered to protect from bugs and other possible contaminants. I wondered why I had just now got around to visiting Indian Valley at their Indian, AK location. As soon as I pulled up, I realized why: this is the definition of "tourist trap". My Mom and brother are visiting (tourists) and even they weren't impressed. This place is mostly overpriced jerky and sausage that is deceptively marketed. What do I mean? Well, stuff like this: "Elk Sausage": first ingredient "beef" "Reindeer Sausage": first ingredient "pork" If you're looking for cuts of game meat, say an Elk ribeye or a Caribou steak...this is not the place, they don't have any meat like this. If you're looking for 5% wild/game meat augmented with beef and pork, this is your spot! The snack-sized portions of jerky start at roughly $16. I saw a small container of habanero garlic cloves for about $18. They do process game meat that you've hunted yourself, that might be the best use of this business. One star is too many stars for these people. The first part of our experience was walking into their incredibly bad smelling storefront to pick up our order. Needless to say everything's gone downhill from there. Their meat processing is shockingly bad I had half a cow process there this year and it has been a terrible experience. I included photos of what they're calling a sirloin steak. It has a huge bone in the middle more bone than meat. This is the second sirloin steak. I've opened with weird bones in it. The other picture is of what they're calling stew meat you can see how brown and discolored the meat is Had random cut marks in it. I guess it's a you cut stew meat as I had to finish cutting it into chunks of meat myself for stew. I'm pretty sure they replaced the meat I took in with whatever garbage they had left over every package I'm open has disgusting brown spots where they let it get oxidized too much and didn't trim it properly. I had some of the cow process into the teriyaki sticks. They are terrible. It taste rancid even though I immediately cut them up and put them in the freezer to be stored safely. It's like they've already gone bad as soon as you open them. I would definitely steer clear if you care about getting an edible product back every package I open from them is bigger disappointment than the last truly horrific what they did to that poor grass fed cow. read more

if I could give zero stars I would. we brought meat to indian valley meats for a friend who came to Alaska to hunt caribou. they got two caribou dropped them off and never got their meat. after 5+ attempts (calls from out of state) to get answer with no answers or return calls they were finally told today they can't wait a year to check on meat. That they had no meat to give them. So the investment to come to Alaska to hunt for great food resources was stolen from them. do not use this business. likely they'll do the same to you and blame you and sell your meat to make a profit while you're out your hunt investment. We had our moose processed here this year. The price was reasonable and they did a great job. We had two quarters and the neck and rib cage with backstaps and tenderloins. It was a basic processing job consisting of trimming from the bone and cutting the back straps and tenderloins into steaks with bone in 2" thick and the rest into one pound packages of moose burger. Everything was done as requested and returned quickly considering were took it in on the opening weekend of moose season. They were less expensive that Alaska Sausage where we have taken our game for years. We tried Indian Valley this year as Alaska Sausage was closed on Labor Day during the opening weekend. We will return to Indian Valley in the future with our Caribou and have them process it into Sausage. read more

This is also the BEST place to get prepackaged jerky and sausage as gifts or souvenirs to take home for you or friends/family at the lowest prices in the state; this is kind of "outlet/discount" pricing that is the reward for driving out to them instead of getting it at one of the downtown Anchorage tourist traps. The meat is advertised as bison, reindeer, or elk, but looking at the ingredients I think they all are a mixture of multiple meats (like beef or pork), so read the labels if you're concerned about that. This is also a great place for both processing your fresh meat (smoking salmon, or turning bear, reindeer, moose, or caribou into sausage, jerky, pepperoni sticks, etc.). I don't know if they do a good job with meat or fish, but they have no interest in protecting their customers from the pandemic. None of the people inside the store (customers or staff) wore masks, even the elderly lady who works there. They are in clear and blatant violation of the mayor's mandates. I was a tourist recently to Alaska and wanted some area jerky as souvenirs to take home and share. We were told to stop here on our way through Anchorage to purchase these items. We bought individual packets of reindeer jerky and OMG! It's so tough, it's like chewing on plastic or shoe leather. We ended up throwing it all away as it was impossible to even soften it up! So disappointed and waste of money. Their other product may be good but stay away from the processed meat. On a side note, the two women waiting on customers were not friendly or helpful. We felt like an inconvenience. No need to make a stop here. read more

I've priced just about every meat packing place in south central. We (a whole bunch of us!) think Indian Valley is the best. The prices are competitive if not the cheapest but the product is the best tasting, too. In Alaska, if you hunt or fish, you have to familiarize yourself with a meat packing place. At some point you just can't do it all by yourself all of the time. Most have web sites and post their prices, clean meat policies and packing policies. At Indian Valley, they guarantee that all the meat you get back is your meat - not a mix of someone else's. Some places mix other meat with yours to make sausage especially, so they can make it in large batches. Indian Valley does not do this. This is how the procedure went for me. Spouse and relative kill a caribou in Barrow. They skin it, gut it and cut it up and send it down with a Shell oil friend who was traveling light so the caribou made up his "luggage". I met said friend who transfers meat to me. I take a couple hours off work and drive from Anchorage to Indian Valley (30 miles south of Anchorage on the scenic Seward Highway). The 80 lbs of meat is divided up into two coolers in the back of my SUV. I see moose and mountain goats on the drive. I go to Indian Valley (road signs tell you where to turn) - driving up the steep road into the mountains and back into the area where meat is unloaded. There are signs that tell you where to unload. I go into the main area and the place is full of men loading and unloading moose and caribou, etc. Two men who look like they work there ask me if they can help me and they follow me out and load up the heavy meat. They bring it in and weigh it in tubs and then help me fill out the order form. I am told it will be ready in 11-14 days. The place is busy. 10 days later I get a call to go pick up the meat. A man meets me at the side and again, packs all the meat into my SUV for me. He even holds my hand so I don't fall on my ass in the perpetually icy parking lot! The photos show what we got back - total 116# of meat from 81# we dropped off (stuff added to sausage and burger). I get it home and divvy it up for the person we are sharing with. The border collie ignores it as it's all spread out on the floor (see pics) but the cats circle and sniff like vultures. Very cool. We will cut and vacuum seal the jerky and sticks ourselves which saves money. Total cost was $197 which is about $1.77 per lb. Fabulous. They do caribou, moose, deer...fish too...You name it. If you shoot it in Alaska, they will help you package it and ship it out. I will ship half of it back to Barrow free of charge again thanks to our friend who works for Shell...yes, he gets some of the meat too! I was most impressed with the slick service - gentlemen that jumped to carry it in and out and helped with the order forms, too. I also like the ambiance of the mountain setting. They have peacocks and stuff wandering around...and there is a nice bed and breakfast as well - besides the million dollar view. Indian Valley is a top choice among many Eskimo in the North Slope. They can ship game down thru Northern Air Cargo and back if they don't have someone willing to mule it in or out. You get many choices of flavors and varieties of sausages, sticks and jerky and the prices are competitive. This is also a favorite place for everyone in south central Alaska for smoked salmon - they have infinite varieties. This is a family run business but you can find their foods in nearly every retail store in Alaska. You can trust them with your game. read more

I've been putting off this review as it's hard to criticize a place that produces such fabulous meat. However, we took 435 pounds of clean, skinned moose and received back 135 pounds of processed meat. When we asked where the rest was were told that was all there would be. We had over half the meat slated for burger which they ADD 20% more fat to the meat mix. In asking around our hunting friends they all said we were robbed. IVM's refused to reduce the price to us, or even look for the missing meat. There were 4 experienced hunters involved in this transaction, and they all were stunned by the lack of response by IVM's, and the gross reduction of meat received back to us. As a devout bachelor living in a hipster condo downtown, I don't have the luxury of owning an Alaskan sized smoker to take care of my catch. So, I'm looking at 30 pounds of king salmon fillets in my freezer storage locker with the Homer Winter King Derby looming on the horizon. Obviously, I will need the room for my derby-winning catch to be laid to rest. I ask around, and some of my friends suggest smoking it. Once it's "mouth ready", food seems to disappear quickly. IVM was suggested, so off I go. I was driving up the incline to the shop when I realized that I hadn't been up here in over 30 years! Yep, the last time was in 1985 to pick up some venison I had processed. Why haven't I been back? Must have been living under a rock. I took my fillets into the store where they were weighed and my order form filled out. There were four flavor choices for the kippered style of smoking, and I was really torn about getting all of it "squaw candy" processed. Maybe next time. On my way out, I couldn't resist perusing the displays of smoked meats, fish, and other delights. Reindeer stew meat, smoked cornish game hen, free samples...you name it! Lots of Alaska tourist trap stuff for the summer crowd, and ice cream too! On my back and forths this summer between Anchorage and Homer, this will definitely be one of my go-to stops! DO NOT GO HERE. I heard from multiple sources (people that use to work here) that when processing your meat, they just throw a bunch of other peoples meat in the grinder etc. So your final product could include your moose, somebody else's moose, AND somebody else's moose (for example). This isn't normal, and is the lazy way to do things. Don't give them your money. read more

Recently four of us went to Whittier AK fishing with Crazy Ray's Adventures. After two days fishing, we had about 250 pounds of halibut and king salmon filets to be packaged and frozen. Our daughter and son-in-law were flying back to Kansas City from Anchorage three days later. Indian Valley Meats had their fish frozen and packaged to ship safely without spoiling. My husband and I were flying back to DFW from Fairbanks 6 days later and could not pick up our fish. Indian Valley Meats shipped it by FedEx, and it arrived in less than 24 hours from the time we called. It arrived still frozen and in great shape! We were extremely pleased with their handling our fish and their customer service! They even have after-hours drop-off for your fish, 24-hour service, which we used. read more

I really don't know if Indian Valley advertises at all. My guess is they don't need to. Word of mouth probably gets them most of their new business. I know that's what got me to go there in the first place: About 10 years ago a friend told me to take my fish there if I wanted the best finished product. In those 10 years I've recommended them to dozens of people. Even if you're not a fisherman or a hunter but just like eating the stuff, their store is loaded with a huge, delicious variety of smoked fish, jerky, reindeer sausage.... you name it. All made on the premises and all fantastic. It's worth stopping by on your way up or down the Seward Highway to try some samples and pick up some great tasting fish or meat for the ride (or to give as gifts... believe me, people love it when you give them stuff from Indian Valley, especially if it's fish or game you harvested yourself). Great people to deal with, consistently high standards, and a sterling reputation. Really, it doesn't get better than that. Highly recommended. read more

I love this place! We are avid fisherpeople and have tried the other companies throughout the years. Without a doubt this place has the best customer service and prices. For example, I was late getting there and they had closed 30 minutes prior. Instead of turning me away and telling me to come back the next day the gentelmen took my fish . Thanks you thank you! I hate processing it myself and since we fish every weekend it can be so timeconsuming. i just drop it off, they follow my directions and viola! I've only gone there to get wild game processed, but they do that extremely well. A bit pricey, but you pay for quality.
