So I visited Little India as I wanted to complete my Shawlands strip of Indian restaurants, plus it…read morewas marginally cheaper than Cafe Noor (which I had already been to) when outside of Cafe Noor's awesome pre-theatre deal time. The service wasn't particuly speedy or good (they were very puzzled that one of our group wanted popadums with his main, not as a starter and that we weren't ordering starters) and indeed proceeded to deliver the popadums as a starter - awkward as no one else had a starter. Beer prices around average for an Indian restaurant. The keema naan was really nice though, with a proper layer of keema in the middle of the naan. The mince vindaloo was also very tasty, really hot too. However the Tikka Masala looked very similar to the korma which was slightly off-putting. In a city full of very good and excellent Indian restaurants, I'm afraid I can't recommend Little India - however it's decent enough.

I do it all the time:/ Well today I decided to forget "new and cool" and pop in for a £4.90, 2 course lunch deal. Pakora and a curry with accompaniment for £4.90! Pretty good deal for the cost of a soup and a sandwich in some places. Have to say the food was well prepared and delicious and the service was more than adequate, so I'll have no hesitation returning... :)

However, behind the slightly crass exterior lurks a genuinely enjoyable Indian restaurant which my boyfriend (who lives nearby)raves about. What makes the Pearl of India so enjoyable is the way the staff makes you feel like a valuable regular, even if this is your first visit. The level of attention given to customers can be slightly overwhelming at times. After briefly hinting that he was thinking of going to the restaurant for Christmas dinner, my boyfriend's dad found himself harranged by three members of staff, a diary book and a selection of Christmas menus for a good twenty minutes, before having to ask them (politely) to leave him alone. Perhaps he should have expected it really - he was probably the only person to query having Christmas dinner here (what about turkey & all the trimmings?!) As far as the food goes, it has quite simply the one of the finest chicken pakora in Glasgow and that alone is worth the trip! Yum yum.

The food however, my god the food, the two of us that went ordered so much and really couldn't stop eating, we waddled out after I definitely will go back now that I know where it is

Same team and hopefully same excellent restaurant and great menu! Arrive hungry and choose the banquet! Just like its hugely popular sibling Balbirs in Glasgow West End they serve the banquet to your table. Everyone raves about their tandoori salmon, though I stick to their vegetarian options. Its a smart joint serving excellent modern Indian cuisine. Keep your eyes peeled for signposts on A77. Since the new Symington flyover the access to Balbirs has changed a little to make it safer and easier. Who would have thought an unspectacular 'box' that was once home to a Little Chef could be so lovely inside!

Overhauld (practically rebuilt) withmuch more room & lots of parking at the rear, this is probably the only restaurant I have regularly eaten in at least 4 times a month. Service is excellent, with the boss Michael & waiters providing an efficient and friendly, but never intrusive service, and quality and taste of food just outstanding! I have eaten in the other variants of Balbirs, in Church St in Glasgow's West End, at Shawlands, at Charing Cross, but though very good, they don't really come up to Balbir's at Route 77 standard in terms of outright taste and quality. Much of this is down to the chef's interpretation of a dish, for example try a lamb saag here & then compare elsewhere & you'll see the difference. Similarly the lamb methi and chicken tikka achari or pan fried lamb fillet interpretations are unbeatable. For something really different, order the salmon pakora, and you'll be back here for more. We've eaten in Asian restaurants around the world : some good, some very good and some I'd rather forget about & am happy to see that in the last 10 years or so the number of really good Asian restaurants in Glasgow & West of Scotland in particular (sorry : don't know about Edinburgh) has increased enormously. However judged on the sheer flavours which burst in your mouth, irrespective of which dish you've ordered, this retaurant comes right at the top. Theres no doubt if I was to be asked what my one favourite restaurant is, this has to be it. Price : extremely reasonable considering the high quality and a bit less than what you'd pay in central Glasgow. Just about forgot they do carry outs to the same high standard. The only slight downside is the slightly remote location which realistically means it can only be accessed by car (I suppose the up side is it doesn't get invaded by over excited people from the local pubs around closing time) and if heading back to Kilmarnock / Glasgow you have to head towards Prestwick first before turning since it's a dual carriageway. A trivial price to pay though. All in All I would have no hesitation in recommending this Balbir's to any discerning curry lover & have no hesitation in awarding it five stars.
