We went to this place for our first dinner while visiting some friend there in Las Cruces upon their recommendation and we are so glad we went. The place is not super fancy, but the service and food certainly made up for it! We all ordered mangalasis and they were smooth, creamy and delicious-- I had TWO! I personally ordered the goat curry, as I had never had before and thought it was yummy. Everyone in our party liked their meals as well. The food at India Hut used to be good, a bit too oily, but pretty good. We went last night and it was inedible. It seemed like someone dumped tablespoons of salt in our food, way too much pepper, the portions were smaller, and the food was swimming in grease. I don't know if there are new owners. This place used to be my go to for Indian food however, lately the orders come out prepared incorrectly, and when you question how the food was prepared, the cook is to blame overall I would say this place now has poor service and poor ambience. Still good food. Different greeters (they also have an El Paso location now). Still courteous. Their food has changed a bit - for the better - and more items added to the menu. The vegetable biryani was good, no longer "aromatic (perfumey)", thankfully. Lots of different vegs. The kulcha was very good, as well as the samosas. It took a very long time to get the food - almost an hour - but I'm really not complaining. I've waited five years to come back here, so what's a few more minutes ;) But hopefully the next time won't be so long...or... so long. The inside is nicer than before with blinds instead of the curtains and overall a bit nicer and cleaner, fresher looking/feeling. In the middle of the summer, it was very hot inside. I don't eat much in restaurants anymore and had my food "to go" anyway. The outdoor seating is minimal, ratchety little seats and tables and in the sun. It'd be nice if that could be their next upgrade project. If you are looking for a buffet, they no longer have one. I for one, never did the buffet before covid and have ZERO desire to ever get food from a buffet ever. For those who don't understand why they haven't brought it back (perhaps they will in the future, who knows?), buffets are THE worst, most unhygienic places, full of bacteria, and why so many people through the years before covid have gotten sick after eating in buffet restaurants. I could care less if they ever bring it back, though it may be good for their business, esp during the lunch hour when people don't have time to wait for food. Overall, it's pretty good, and currently, it's the best Indian food in town. The only other place barely got started and doesn't have a full menu yet. Sadly, if the other Indian place gets going, and is any good, I probably will only be at India Hut once in a blue moon, as it is in a very hard to get to area from the Northeast side of town. Vegetable samosas were prefect, butter Naan was excellent for scooping up all the sauce from my paneer tikka masala. I miss the dinning experience here and they have never recovered after COVID and seem content to only do to go orders from here on out. Great freshly home cooked Indian food! I have not had anything bad from this place. My favorite is the buttered chicken and their garlic naan bread. If you want it really spicy you need to let them know when ordering. The only reason I am not giving India Hut a 5 star rating is because most of the time when we order to-go from here it is usually double the amount of waiting time that they tell us that it will take. However it is a mom and pop with limited staff who are always a delight and the food is definitely worth the wait! The hubby and I just take that extra time into consideration when ordering and our food is always stove hot when we pick it up along with the naan bread being freshly baked! This is one of our main go to spots. Their lunch plates are very filling, along with their regular entrees which can easily feed two! read more

My husband and another couple recently ate there for the first time. While I've been in Indian restaurants that did more to make their setting feel more authentic, India Hut set the scene sufficiently. We had read that service could be slow, so we had decided to get there a half hour earlier than usual. As it turned out, service was fine and we easily could have gone when we originally planned. However, I tenor that observation with the fact that we ate there midafternoon on a weekday. Our server was a young man. His english was heavily accented, which made our communication choppy at times, but added to the Indian authenticity. We all selected from their goat and lamb selections on the front of the menu. The meat was appropriately served in the sauce separate from the rice. We all enjoyed our food. While my husband and friends ordered their's medium spicy, I venture to the 'hot' category. Be forewarned, when I say 'hot' it was at the limit of my tolerance and I'm generally unphased by most anything in this area. I rated our experience with four stars because I felt that the prices were high for the dishes served. My Lamb Curry had perhaps five 1" cubed chunks of lamb in a sea of sauce (even after dishing the sauce and meat over the rice, there was enough that I took the sauce home). The rice was perhaps a cup and a quarter in size. Naan was not provided with the meal. At $16.99, I found the price expensive. read more

Although it was very busy and it did take a little bit, it was definitely worth the wait and our server was incredibly attentive for how busy he was. I heard they cleaned up their kitchen after getting a bad review so I gave them a shot. Everything was delicious. I ordered some chicken saag (spinach chicken), butter chicken and garlic naan. If you like it spicy make sure to get it hot. The medium spice level didn't even tingle my tongue. I've been to many really good Indian restaurants in cities like Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Dallas and our little city has some Indian food here at India hut that stands up with the best of them. If you are looking for an elegant dining experience this probably isn't the place for you. If you are in search of really good Indian food then look no further. They had our favorite dishes, lamb vindaloo for me and butter chicken for my wife plus lots of garlic naan. I like mine pretty spicy and it could have been spicier, but the flavor was great. They could also use more drink options but my tea also good. This place is certainly no frills and has little in the way of atmosphere but the service was excellent and the food was great so I think it's worth checking out. read more

In rating India Hut you have to consider where the restaurant is. In Las Cruces, NM you're lucky to find something other than a chain or a Mexican restaurant. What is encouraging is that while we were at the restaurant we did notice India Hut taking a lot of to go orders. That means Las Cruceans pallets are broadening! That's great. India Hut took over what I think used to be an old Taco Bell. I'm not for sure, but I always like seeing businesses recycling former businesses. It's a shame when buildings go unused and wither away. That said, it's not the most appealing place to have dinner in. LoL. Caste your criticism away and you'll be fine. It's a simple little building that can be summed up as a blend of India flare with American diner. The food was good. My lovely wife ordered chicken vindaloo, kids had butter chicken, chicken tikka masalla, and chicken tikka. I had the chicken biryani. Mine was surprisingly good. I didn't expect it to pop the way it did and I was pleased to experience that. The kids all enjoyed their meal, and when young kids eat and enjoy you know it's good. Kids tell the truth and most times in a manner to embarrass their parents. In this case the food was good enough to keep them relatively calm and having decent table manner. LoL. My wife's said she is accustomed to her vindaloo being spicy right away. India Huts vindaloo took a second to get hot. That makes me wonder if they rely on dry spice for heat as opposed to something fresh. Either way it was still good. The best thing about Indian restaurants is that middle eastern people love children. I have spent many tours overseas and I have had the good fortune to get to know people around the world, and one of the most encouraging things I've found in the Middle East is how cool they are with kids. When I first experienced it I thought it was weird. Now I see it is their culture. That doesn't mean come to India Hut and expect them to babysit your children, no. It means you don't have to feel on edge because you have kids. As a whole we enjoyed our dining experience at India Hut. Good Food but overpriced for a most casual restaurant. Now that the pandemic is in the rear window and the Indian Hut has reopened with regular hours I decided to stop in and see what has changed. First off the interior and ambiance are much the same. This is a smallish and very casual restaurant. It appeared tidy and clean but it is not a place for a special night out with your girl. The service was performed by one young Indian man who acted as both host and server. He was dressed in a pair of blue jeans and had a shirt not tucked in and a baseball cap on. He was pleasant enough but certainly not a conversationalist and it was clear that the service was not of a professional quality. Still, no complaints on the service. Also of note: for those of us who like a buffet when it comes to an Indian restaurant...they have done away with it. No buffet! The menu is a bit restrictive but it has a number of the more traditional dishes. From the time I placed my order to the time my food arrived at table over TWENTY MINUTES had passed. Although there were only a couple of people in the restaurant at the time it still took that long to prepare my meal. I ordered the CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA which came with a side of rice but NO NAAN. The main dish cost $15.00 and was nothing more than chicken breast chunks in a sauce. If I wanted the naan with it I was expected to fork out an additional $4.00. A soft drink is $2.50. With tax this simple meal would cost $23.00. Factor in a tip and your cost is about $26.50. That's a hefty price for some chicken chunks in sauce, some rice, naan bread, and a soft drink. If you take your special someone out for dinner at the India Hut you will pay...without an appetizer of dessert...about $55.00 or so for a most basic meal. Most meals with meat run $15.00 to $18.00 Considering that this is not exactly fine dining in an upscale restaurant I'll leave it up to you to decide if the experience is worth the money. Keep in mind that their appetizers run between six, eight, and twelve dollars. On the other hand, there was a good bit of chicken on that little silver dish along with a fair amount of rice on a second silver dish. The chicken was tender and had a real nice Indian flavor. The rice was sort of ordinary. The curry masala sauce was very good, but not exceptional. Upon ordering they did give me the option of having my food, hot, medium, or mild. I selected medium and it was spot on. At the end of the day I would judge the flavor and quality of the food at the India Hut to be around FOUR STARS....meaning quite good. The overall dining experience I would argue is about THREE-AND-A-HALF STARS...meaning just above average due to the ambiance, service, and slow preparation of the food. Whether all this is worth the cost.......you decide??? (Ps....there is another Indian restaurant set to open across from the Las Cruces Library on Main Street. It will be called "A Taste of India." I will report back on it when it does open this summer.) read more

HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU GO. Best Indian food and prices (and maybe the best restaurant) in Las Cruces. Fresh ingredients and friendly service - we have returned every week since the first time we went. Standouts are Goat Curry (request your spice level) Chicken Masala and the plain naan which we use to scoop the delicious sauce. The basmati rice that comes with many dishes is the best we've had (N.Y. D.C. Philly) anywhere. We always have enough left over for another full dinner at home. The outside is a bit dismal, but the food is as good as any Indian we've had (and we moved here from the SF Bay Area). The chicken tikka masala, chicken korma, and coconut chicken were all excellent. Their buffet is almost always on point but at the end of lunch and dinner the food is not nearly as fresh as it could Update 3/1/19 Gone there 2 times in a row, customer service has really gone down the toilet. 2weeks ago there was one server, place had about 20 people and there were no plates or silverware. Server was in the back and never came out to help. Left after 15 minutes waiting for a plate to serve myself. Yesterday, showed up about 11:15. No chicken in the curry chicken or chicken tiki massala....just sauce. Asked the server and she had no idea what to say. Watched 5 people walk in, look over buffet and leave. Sad because the place use to be a great alternative but now suffers from Las Cruces syndrome: poor service, untrained wait staff and owners who just don't seem to care. I'm so glad I found the India Hut in Las Cruces. I ordered the Butter Chicken and the Mushroom Mutter and they were both delicious. The Naan was also a hit. Nice Basmati Rice. The dishes were carefully packed for takeout (no leakage or spillage during 70 mile trip home). I haven't been visiting Las Cruces very often during the pandemic but now I have another reason to make the drive more frequently. A winner. Thank you. read more
