I love Indian food! I love supporting family owned businesses! I love Bellingham! Even with all these predisposing factors, I couldn't help but noticing that the India Grill was nothing special! My service - other than the man who swept out front and cleared my table - was moody, like they didn't want to be there. (The clean up guy was great, however!) This little Indian place has tasty yet fairly "safe" curries. I like them for what they are but don't expect to be blown away with spice and flavor. Comes with an appetizer, soup, salad, multiple types of chicken (sub one for lamb if they'll let you, its delicious!), vegetables, rice, naan, and dessert, but all in small portion sizes. It's a perfect amount of food and a great way to try everything! Unfortunately, both times that I've been here, we've been the only people in the restaurant. Three tiny pieces of chicken, one shrimp, one lamb roll. $16. We also ordered lamb masala. I would say the spicing was good, but not enough cream for a masala. Six small cubes of lamb. $13. Garlic naan was ok. Place is terribly overpriced for the portion size. Stay away from the tandoor oven stuff. read more

I've been craving Indian food and had passed this place during downtown wandering. It was very quiet on a rainy Monday with no diners except for myself. The $9 buffet offers 7 main dish options (4 vegetarian) with fresh naan, water, and two desserts (rice pudding, cucumber yogurt). I love indian food and have visited A LOT of them in the suburbs of Seattle and in the university district near UW. This place is one of the worst I've been to in a long time. The atmosphere is very odd. There was one employee (maybe the owner?) who was the only host/server and cook. Not particularly friendly, but not rude. We came for the lunch buffet and the food was neither fresh nor tasty. We could tell it had been sitting out for some time without being refilled. Lunch at an Indian buffet usually leaves me happy, even satisfied. Few are the type of place you'd write a review about, but for better or worse, there's the occasional anomaly. I'm a relative newcomer to Bellingham and every time I walked past India Grill, I thought, yum, I've got to fork out $7.95 and fork in a load of goodness. Today I finally fulfilled that fantasy. Unfortunately, my fantasy was like beer goggles and the reality was like waking up hangover next to a homeless prostitute. The front door buckled and jerked in the afternoon gale and once I figured out how to open it (user error) I walked into a dusty, dated, grease-colored cavern. The decorations were cheesy and dated and there was no place not to sit, since other than the host, my partner and I were the only people there. The host was not unkind, though not attentive. The process was straight forward, grab a plate and dig in. Unfortunately, digging in meant choosing from about six options that had undoubtedly been warming for hours and heaving them over rice. The chicken and pork were both chewy and dry, though the curry sauces they soaked in were not bad. The vegetable curry was OK, but too heavy on potatoes. The tandoori chicken was so flavorless, it seemed to have been dusted with powdered, red food coloring. Like it's curried brethren it was dry. The spinach was nearly liquified and the naan was dull. The green salad had been sitting for so long that the lettuce at the bottom of the bowl was disintegrating. I discovered this after picking up the tongs, probing the contents, and promptly replacing said tongs. The dahl wasn't bad, nor the vegetable curry. My favorite dishes were the rice and the rice pudding dessert. I left with three thoughts: 1. I hope I don't get food poisoning. 2. That was a waste of my weekly meal out. 3. That was the WORST Indian buffet I have ever experienced. read more

I dunno why this place has bad reviews. Its great. The lunch buffet is straight sick. Paneer, tikka, masala, some spinich thing with potatos, curry, tons of lamb. And for what... This place has a great lunch buffet where you can pretty much eat all the dahl you want (plus other amazing dishes) for under $10. If you come here in the evening, they offer an array of traditional Indian dishes. I believe it is the better Indian restaurant in town. My husband and I were spending the day together and decided to make the drive from Stanwood to Bellingham for the day. I had a craving for Indian food and after searching for a restaurant offering a buffet on a Sunday we ended up walking in here. It has authentic decor and low lighting typical to an Indian restaurant. The buffet was of reasonable size and everything we tried was delicious. We enjoyed our lunch and the people who served us. This place definitely offers the worst Indian food in Bellingham. It is extremely over priced and their lunch buffet is not even served on top of heaters so the food just sits there getting cold. The only reason why I am giving it two stars is because the decor is nice and the service is decent. I always laugh at their Bellingham Herald ads which advertise "AWARD WINNING CUISINE". I used to eat their lunch buffet fairly frequently because I have always been a big fan of Indian food, but for the last year or so I have been going to Indian Flavors on Meridian Street instead. My boyfriend and I were downtown recently and decided to give India Grill another shot. Bad idea! The lunch buffet consisted of bland Tandoori chicken that tasted like it had been steamed instead of baked, various watery veggies dishes, and a few pieces of stale naan bread that must have been left over from the week before. For a town of its size, Bellingham has an amazing selection of restaurants. Sadly, it does not have an amazing selection of Indian restaurants. I count Indian food amongst my favorites, and I do eat here from time to time but it is always a decision I back into from a lack of better choices. I can't help but place India Grill on a quality scale. It's not in the same league as this place in White Rock that is mind blowing, a little pricier but well worth it for the thick, rich sauces and eat-way-too-much goodness. I can think of four places in the U district of Seattle that are tastier so when I find India Grill at the bottom of that scale, it's hard to get excited about it. Decor isn't really something that draws me to a restaurant but at least they replaced the carpet. I always thought it was iron grey in color until I noticed that the edges betrayed it as originally being a blushing pink. That was enough to dim my appetite for India Grill on a number of occasions. The lunch buffet is overpriced at $8. It'd be overpriced at $7. The nan is a bit leathery. The dal and aloo gobhi are not bad and the palak (spinach curry) is good. I admit that I have never been here for dinner but the buffet is just not inspiring. I've tried them at the Farmer's Market and the quality was the same. Edible but nothing to write home about. I have never been to their location downtown but today I stopped by their new location on the WWU campus (vendor's row). I stopped because they had a sign that said "Veg. Samosa $1". Joy rang through the land. I hurried quickly to press my freshly found dollar bill into the vendors hand. The Samosa was excellent and for only ONE DOLLAR it is now the best deal on campus. I eat my Samosa with sauce. (The sauce was also awesome) The Samosa was in fact SO delicious, I had to dig through my purse for a second dollar. Once found I hurried back to the stand, and the attendant was so gracious and sensitive my plight that he hooked me up with two. I found a friend to give the other to. The owner of the restaurant, Santok, is the most friendly and caring fellow in the world. The man lives to share his great food with great people. I bought lunch from the WWU venders row location and it was delicious. The food was not too heavy and greasy like other options on venders row, and it was very flavorful. I got a mix of the different entrees offered and loved the spinach and butter curry chicken especially. Not to mention the portion size is more than fulfilling.
