If I could give this wife-husband run restaurant more than 5 stars, I would. I have eaten there about 4 or 5 times in the last six months & have never been disappointed. India Garden is now the last surviving authentic North Indian Punjabi restaurant in Pittsburgh. Don't get me wrong--there are many fantastic Indian restaurants in Pittsburgh. But after the change of ownership of Taj Mahal (in Pittsburgh & Bridgeville, PA), most other restaurants are purveyors of non-Punjabi Indian food (eg Gujarati Indian, Udipi South Indian, Goan Indian, Bengali Indian etc.) The only Indian restaurant that features a North Indian Punjabi chef (the aforementioned husband-wife duo) is India Garden. I recommend all their breads, especially the tava-cooked Aloo Paratha and Plain Paratha. Make sure you ask for the Paratha to be cooked on Tava (Indian pan) and not the Tandoor oven. I find all their naans delicious but my favorites are the their butter naan & garlic naan. Their chicken reshmi kabab appetizer is especially noteworthy. They serve it on an aesthetically pleasing bed of vegetables including peppers. But that only tends to distract from the tenderness & flavoring of the kebab meat. Their sarson-ka-saag (mix of mustard leaves with other leafy veggies) is simply outstanding. Pair it with the plain paratha or Makki-ki-roti (Punjabi flatbread made from finely ground corn flour). And ask for their home-made butter on the side. Unlike other Indian restaurants they provide Indian pickle either free (with paratha) or at a nominal charge. One other pairing we like is their version of Indian scrambled eggs (Bhurji) with Plain Paratha. Other reviewers have favorably reviewed their other dishes (chicken, lamb etc). And I agree wholeheartedly: they are all delicious. As for Ambiance: it's quite acceptable. What makes this restaurant stand out is the freshness of ingredients and above all, the love with which the food is made. You taste that love with every morsel you eat. Kudos to the owners for maintaining the high standards of Indian flavors & freshness in their food. Oh, and by the way, the Indian pickle they serve is also house made and not out of a jar bought at some Indian grocery store. And if you new to Indian food, feel free to ask the owners for advice. I love the food. Absolutely delicious and their garlic naan, perfect. I had a lamb dish I think it was called Rogan Josh or something. I got a spice level seven and that was perfect. Just enough to taste the spice without it burning you. My friend got spice level five and didn't taste anything spicy. I also had the mango lassi which was great. The restaurant is located on a strip mall. Nothing fancy. The bathroom was clean. The tables are super weird. It's all booths and the booth is movable but it's attached to the booth/seat behind you if that makes sense. So if you move your booth forward, you are moving the person's chair behind you backward. it was an uncomfortable set up but at least the food was delicious. read more

Their food is like non other. I was never a fan of Indian food. I don't like curry. Or at least I thought I didn't like curry. I got a gift card for a meeting once and ordered India Garden to try the Tika Masala. I also got some naan. This was, by far, one of the best lunches I had ever had. So fast-forward, we were out and about one day and thought we'd stop for the buffet. There was a line-but, I was determined. I must try more of their tasty food options. We had about a 10 minute wait. Not too bad. We were seated and told about the buffet options. We tried a lot of them and they were all amazing!! I am not a big dessert person, so that wasn't where I spent my time. Tika Masala, Butter Chicken, Naan....and then seconds! This is quite a great restaurant, with lots of different Indian foods. Some of them, like the Kabuli naan, are quite unique. I decided to try some classic Indian foods, and ordered the chana masala (mild spice) which came with the usual side of rice, as well as some gulab jamun. I was very surprised by how many gulab jamun pieces they give you per order! This was definitely one of the better priced deals for such a treat. There were 4 large pieces, and all of them were plump and soaked full of sweet syrup. They did have a bit of a starnge flavor. Almost as if they were in the refrigerator with some other food. And they were extremely cold as well. The channa masala was good, too. A nice portion for just $12. They made the food a bit too spicy for my taste, but I think they will satisfy most people who enjoy a bit of spice but not too much. Overall, it was a nice and flavorful curry. Lots of chickpeas and a curry 'sauce' that was a nice consistency. All in all, it's a good spot to check out in Monroville. I especially think they are great when you need a good deal. The food isn't the best in the city or anything like that, but you should be satisfied. Growing up on Indian food I am really particular. After years of trying and going to places after a conversation with a owner once I figured out what I like the best. I love home style Indian food. What I mean by that is that I got used to eating it this way and when I go to higher end Indian restaurants it does taste the same. I know weird when I say it that way but I think that's why this is my go to for Indian food in the area. Family visited and he grew up in England. I asked him would he like to try the food at my favorite Indian place around. He got so excited and said YES. Ordered around 5 different meals plus a bunch of other sides. We got everything we ordered and picked up in less then 30 minutes. Went home and set up for our home style Indian dinner. Everything was delicious, hot and fresh. We each ate something of what we ordered and were more then pleased. My favorite their is the Mutton vindaloo. I get spiced to the max and each time I finish very happy plus very full. Visited this place for a graduation lunch. There is an entrance to the restaurant and the hall is located at one end and has its own individual entrance too. The tables and chairs inside were well displayed. Food served was really good and they ahad a large variety displayed. Tikki chaat, dahibhalla, rice, paneer, saag paneer, kadi rice, naan were on the menu. Currys were smooth and well spiced, food was warm and good. For desserts had pistachio and mango kulfi both were good too. The shopping center nearby looked little rundown. There was ample parking available and not many customers were there. read more

I went to the Indian Garden for lunch. It's located in a dilapidated parking lot with struggling businesses, so plenty of parking! Anyhow they offer a lunch buffet from 11-3, I believe, daily. Typically I despise buffets but since I am a novice to Indian food I thought this would be an opportunity to try different things. First time up, I did just that. A small scoop of this, some of that. I really don't know everything that I ate. There were some signs, but unless you are familiar with the cuisine it might as well be written in Hindi. There were a few recognizable things, Chicken Curry, Chilly Chicken, and Chicken in Teriyaki sauce. The rest would be words that made absolutely no sense to me, but I am adventurous so I tried most of what I saw. All in all, I enjoyed it. It wasn't something that rocked my core and made me want to rush back, but there was some good flavor in some of the dishes and a nice spice level. I would say charging $10.00 for a lunch buffet seems steep to me. I think it should be more in line with the 7-8 dollar range, and lastly I felt the dining area could use a good cleaning. This is definitely a diamond in the rough. The service was outstanding and the prices are very reasonable. The bathroom needs some attention so I took one star off. The decor was very cultural and welcoming. I love all the options the menu had to offer in addition to a wine list. We had the lamb curry, rice, bread and tandoori chicken. The food was outstanding. The tandoori chicken came out sizzling and it was very tasty. This was my first time trying it and it will not be the last. The lamb curry and basmati rice were seasoned to perfection and I highly recommend this dish. I had some leftovers and it was delicious the following day as well. The garlic naan was outstanding. It was warm and seasoned just right. It compliment both dishes and with ease. You need to try to get past the look of the exterior of this restaurant. Don't let it scare you off. It is located in an old strip mall next to some kind of strange Halloween oriented indoor miniature golf establishment. I went for lunch buffet and loved it. I just recently started eating Indian whenever I can (since a trip to India) so I ate lots of chicken dishes. Tikka Masala, chicken curry, chili chicken, tandoori chicken & naan was all very good. The Naan was a little crunchy and could have been more fresh, but they did have plain, garlic and cheese naan on the buffet which I don't see often. The dining room is nice and much more reasonable than the exterior (see interior pics). I will eat here again when I am in Monroeville in the future. I suggest you do the same. read more

I've been to India Garden twice and they were incredibly different experiences. What remained consistent was the quality of the food. The first visit was on a Saturday evening. It was some of the worse service I have ever had. We had to ask for menus, there were very infrequent visits by the server to check on us and it took almost an hour before our food arrived. We were going to order dessert, but we worried we would be there another hour if we did. It then took another 20 or so minutes for the bill. The only redeeming factor is that the food was very tasty. I The second trip (because of an expiring certificate) was totally different. Service was so efficient it was almost too much. And it didn't even need to be because we ordered the buffet (which is offered for lunch and Tuesday evenings). The three stars is because of the inconsistent experience. I wish I knew that the service would always be as good as it was on our second visit, but since there is no guarantee it won't take us two plus hours next time we visit, I think I'll be sticking to other area restaurants instead. read more

Tasty and authentic indian food with traditional Indian decor is hard to find in this area. We recently came here for a team dinner and were pleasantly surprised with the variety and quality of the food. The chicken tikka masala is delicious and the vegetarian dishes are just as good. Of course, the non-stop bollywood videos captivated our attention for hours. The only reason this restaurant didn't get a higher rating is because of the lack of service. There were only 3-4 parties in the entire restaurant and yet we waiting for a long time to get our food. The service was good and everything but unfortunately this place is not as good food-wise as it was prior to the p a n d e m i c. I got the chicken malai kebab which is advertised as coming out on a sizzle plate (customary of a tandoor oven dish) but this came out lukewarm, nearly cold, on a bed of raw, bland green peppers and onions, on a regular plate. So I was rather disappointed. And the chai was also pretty weak tasting, unlike how it used to be. I was the only person dining in the place too so I don't understand why the meal was so off. The food was just okay but I appreciated that there was a continuous refill of fresh naans. In sum, the is by and far the most exceptional Indian food in all of Western PA. I really enjoy their buffet too. Normally, I take the Anthony Bordain approach to Buffet which is avoid it at all cost as if plagued. BUT NOT HERE! The buffet here is prepared fresh, each and every time. Indian buffets are popular in pittsburgh. However, a tasty addition found on their indian buffets is almost always an interesting goat dish. Their naan is amazing- crispy, rich, and delicate. I eat too much every time! I believe they are especially skilled in Tandori, Kofta, and Masala. Please do not let the outdated exterior and location sway you- their food is amazing and their service is excellent each and every time. This garden of goodness never fails me. We ordered take out on a Sunday afternoon and it was just as delicious as sitting in the restaurant. I have to say that that is probably the best thing about this place to me: the food tastes just as good whether you eat in or take out. A lot of restaurants aren't consistent with their foods and I really appreciate the fact that India Garden is. They always ask how spicy you want your food..."0-10" . I always receive my meal accurately prepared, and the staff are friendly and accommodating. A few times they even gave me extra garlic naan (brownie points)!! While eating in, I find that our food is always brought to us in a timely manner and drinks are refilled graciously. If you really can't decide and are here during the lunch hour, you can't go wrong with the lunch buffet. Now that I am writing the review, I can't even think of something that I would improve about IG if I could. Maybe it would be a bit of updating the building? However I like the "old feel" and think it adds character. A must-try is the shrimp saag (I can't stray), and the Taj Mahal beer they sell has been requested by my brother in law for years, since he can't find it anywhere in Philly. Arrived around 2pm on Mother's Day. Buffet was the only choice. Buffet had very little food left and had not been replenished for the hour and a half we were there. Plate of unclaimed food was left on the buffet table, no cups for tea, only sauce was left in the entree trays on the buffet. After we wasted an hour and a half we decided it was time to leave and find another place to eat. We had to pay full price of $11.96/person for tomato soup and naan bread "because we ate from the buffet." We won't be back. read more

We ordered manchurian for a starter , which was served quickly with a divine look , but the taste is devastating which stabbed out our appetite . We also ordered egg biryani & a thali in which biryani looked delectable but didn't taste anything like biryani or fried rice atleast Thali is even worse as the curries are sweet even though the spice level we ordered is more , the parata they served with the thali is very hard ,soggy n un chewable. Tried the lunch buffet on a Sunday afternoon. Fairly crowded. Really big selection of Indian favs and some I had never tried. Not very spicy but they have a bowl of homemade chili sauce that will surely kick it up a notch. Good experience and reliable service/food. I have no complaints about the service here but their lunch buffet is seriously lacking. I have been to other Indian buffets and they have almost 3x as many dishes as this restaurant. The goat dish was a paltry 2 pieces of actual goat; instead there were many pieces of sharp bones mixed in the rice. The dessert section had only two items--this sugary mound of gloop and pieces of watery honeydew.
