With only a couple of tables with 4 chairs each, this really is better suited for take out. I was fortunate to grab a table (I didn't want to walk back to my hotel to eat) and really enjoyed my meal here. I met the owner who was really very cordial. Asked about my living in UK, etc. I ordered the lamb Rogan Josh medium spice, with garlic naan. Wonderful depth of flavor. Epic portions for the price with some really nice chunks of lean and tender lamb. The naan was just perfect. Complimentary bottled water was a nice touch. I found this little gem while driving down Post Road and decided to stop in for lunch. I am glad I did! I got the chicken tikka masala lunch special with a mushroom vegetable basmati rice and naan-. The tikka masala was creamy and delicious and I loved The mushroom side that I chose it was perfect! What a great value for 1099. Great lunch special choices! The people there were very nice! The food was pretty good. Not great overall. There were some dishes that were very good and others not so much. The service was fast. The staff were nice enough. The location, however, is not very good at all. Overall, it's a mixed bag. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this place, but, I wouldn't want to necessarily scare anyone away from here either. If you go here, just don't expect to be blown away by much of anything. And don't be surprised if you don't plan to go back again. read more

Seriously good Indian food. I came in for the lunch buffet and was pleasantly surprised. I had chicken tikka masala, goat curry, naan, rice pilaf, chicken tandoori and baingan (eggplant). The tikka masala had an excellent full bodied flavor that had more sweet and tanginess to it than in most other places, and the white meat chicken was not dry. The goat curry was spicy enough to surprise me, in a good way. The chicken tandoori (I chose dark meat) was tender and flavorful, but not spicy. The rice pilaf has celery in it - not a fan of that, although the rice was fine. The naan came in small pieces and was not oily, and cooked just enough to have less chewiness and a bit of crisp to it - good job. Service was friendly and attentive and the decor was a surprise (in a good way) as the outside leaves you guessing. For the cost of the buffet lunch, this was totally worth it. I hope to have dinner there some time to give them another try. read more

I did a double take when we arrived at the location: The dingy hole-in-the-wall we found with two sticky tables for dining in looks nothing like the photos of the sleek, clean, attractive space depicted on Yelp circa 2018. The address and phone number on Yelp appear to be the same as my Google Maps entry, and the menu seems similar to what's posted on Yelp, but... perhaps there were pandemic cutbacks?* After a quick scan of the surrounds, we opted to get our order to go. * Based on the Yelp photos it looks like they may have walled off the entire restaurant except for the recessed entranceway, and set up a register eight feet from the doorway, essentially converting the restaurant into a takeout counter. We went entirely for the south Indian portion of the menu since the kids were begging for dosas -- and this wasn't too far from their camp. The dosas themselves were fair, thin enough, crisp enough, not overly greasy, packaged well for takeout. (We ate them immediately in the car.) Sambar -- which can legitimately vary a lot from region to region or even family to family in India -- was pretty different from what we typically make or eat at Saravannah's or in the kitchens of the south Indian portions of our family. It was pretty thin (rasam thin), made without the addition of much, if any dal, tamarind, or sambar powder. There was the odd (to us) addition of celery, I think, alongside a section of drumstick, a small chunk of potato, something salty. The sambar ate more like a Panera-esque ten vegetable soup than sambar. Maybe this ought to be expected given the north-Indian centric menu. Lesson learned! read more

This place has 2 entrances. The one on the left is for take out and the one on the right is for dine in. We ordered take out: chicken tikka masala, lollipop chicken, and goat curry. These entrees came with 2 orders of basmati rice. Chicken tikka was fine, nothing great, not too bad. The lollipop chicken was pretty good. They used pretty good sized chicken for it and the taste/flavor was great. One thing to note is that the chicken is cooked in a sauce. I'm used to getting lollipop chicken fried and crispy. The goat curry was pretty nice as well, you get lots of chunks of meat. Not the best goat curry I've had, but it was above average at the time. The basmati rice was very basic, just plain and white. Some places mix in some color or peas or something, but its strictly plain here. This take out order took like 30 minutes or 40 minutes to prepare! This is on a saturday afternoon when there was no business (I went to both the cafeteria area and take out area). Friendly staff, and meter parking all outside. read more

I love this place, but it is infuriating. I think their website has the totally wrong hours on it. 3 out of 4 times, when I call them, no one picks up. I called them several times on my birthday, probably around 4:30pm, to put in a huge order for dinner, and was incredibly annoyed when no one answered. I called like 6 times!! I see now on GrubHub that they seem to have changed their hours and not update their website. I think they close from 2:45-5pm no matter how you try to reach them. Tonight was a special pre-yom Kippur dinner with friends and our screwed up order resulted in one of the worst evenings of the year completely ruined because India Cafe restaurant in white plains allowed me to order mango chutney and then did not send it with my $98.62 order.   They felt that offering a $4 credit was ok when I would have NEVER ordered from them if I knew they were out.  Its like ordering burritos and the restaurant runs out of avocado or tortillas and assume the customer still wants the order.  I WOULD HAVE CANCELLED!  Now I'm stuck with $98.62 worth of food and without the essential condiment, its not worth it.  Imagine if you spent $100 on French fries and  looked forward to it for weeks, and when they finally arrive, they tell you they were out of catsup.   We are so upset considering there are plenty of other indian restaurants in the area.  The unfriendly lady at the restaurant told me she was born and raised in India and that no one eats mango chutney with their food. Was this supposed to make me feel better? I was l left insulted and in a rotten mood. When I did finally eat. The food was entirely too spicy for my palate, but I'm sure that if I had complained, I would have been told that its my problem. The service I received on the phone was beyond bad. If you like hot spicy food, you will love this place. But if you order mango chutney and it doesn't arrive, don't worry; apparently only stupid Americans like it and you don't really need it anyway. read more

I recently started working in this area of White Plains and have passed India Cafe multiple times but never tried their food until today. Seeing that most casual conversation at work usually revolves around food, my colleagues and I decided to try someplace new and order lunch from here. India Cafe actually resides in two spaces on East Post Road. In addition to their sit-down restaurant, a few doors down they have a small storefront solely for takeout orders. Peeking into the restaurant, I can see they did a great job with the decor - the modern, clean lines are very inviting. The takeout space isn't as nicely decorated, but you're pretty much in and out so it's no big deal. Since none of us were connoisseurs of Indian cuisine, we decided to play it safe and split some tandoori chicken and naan. The chicken was good - it wasn't try and had loads of spices and flavor. The naan was amazing - they must have just taken it out of the oven because it was warm, chewy, and delicious. I may be partial because I'm a sucker for carbs, but damn - this naan could convert any carbophobe. Overall I was impressed with India Cafe and am glad they're so close to work. I will definitely be ordering from them again and look forward to exploring more of what they have to offer. read more

Very sad to write this review. We have eaten here a few times (at ANAR) & loved the food & service. Always tasty entree's with good flavor & spice. We have ordered food to go also several times & never disappointed. Well today was just the opposite. Maybe there was a new / different chef in the back, all the 3 entree's were not even close to par. All the dishes were bland and the gravy was very diluted. The chicken chettinad we ordered was not the right recipe. Chicken chettinad is one of the most flavorful & spicy hot chicken dishes from the South Indian cuisine. This dish was not spicy & the flavor was off & gravy was watered down. Same with the saag paneer & chicken tikka masala. Was almost ready to go back to the restaurant & return the food, I would have if we lived close, I wish I would have, but It was just too hot & humid outside & the restaurant is a distance from our home. Checked out this place on Sunday for their lunch buffet. I've eaten here before when I worked down the street and liked their food. Post Road isn't the best street for parking during the week, but good on weekends. For $13/person, it's not a bad deal. Loved this place. We stumbled upon India Cafe while looking for something "different" near where we live. We arrived to a totally empty restaurant (8pm on a Sat night), and were naturally nervous. However as our Samosa Chat arrived, all worries went away. Very yummy. We ordered a few entrees, including a lamb biriyani and chicken mappas, and some na'an, including the house special Kerala paratha, which was terrific and totally different than the typical na'an. After a bit, three other tables were filled and the service remained friendly and attentive. Portion size is larger than many Indian places where we've been, and so we'll have enough for lunch! India Cafe is a welcome addition to White Plains. Their location on Post makes it a tough place to get discovered, but there's plenty of parking and it's worthy of a visit for sure. I work a few minutes away and love walking here for a great lunch. The lunch plate offers ALOT of choices and variety, and they have given me a little something extra just about each and every time. It's a small place with no public restroom, about 12-20 seats total -- but takeout = YES. Tried this place for the first time as it's closer than Swagat which is our normal goto Indian restaurant. Food here is actually decent but was really disappointed when we saw the side of "onion chaat" we ordered for $4 was just sliced onion, a slice of jalapeño, and a lemon wedge. No spices or sauces. Called back to verify if they really charged me $4 for sliced onion that literally cost nothing. They verified it is which is hard to believe. Needless to say, it's not the money that bothers me but the principle of it. Skip their "onion chaat". They don't need your donation. read more

Had some great south indian food from this place. One of the best indian restaurants I've recently been to. Their food was great and their customer service was amazing. I would definitely be going back and would strongly recommend it to all. They have a long menu with a lots of south indian food choices. Their Kerala Porotta (I love porotta) was the best out of all, Fresh and soft. We also ordered the Chicken Fried Rice and Chicken Dhum Biriyaani, both were fresh and tasty.
