We went for the lunch buffet on a weekend. The food was good, though I would have liked more vegetarian options. I guess that's just not something to expect at a lunch buffet. Anyway, I was surprised by the rudeness of the staff. They were ok with us, but shockingly rude to a neighboring customer who they said they know/is a regular. Great Indian food! They've recently opened a dine-in area, which has a nice decor. I haven't ordered for delivery very often, but pickup is usually ready on time. All food is made to order, and they're very accommodating if the food is too spicy. Definitely one of my favorite spots! read more

I cannot begin to tell you how much I enjoy this restaurant. It's in a crappy neighborhood next to a liquor store that serves the homeless. If you can get over that the Kerala style Indian cuisine is refreshing and spicy. I enjoy the deep fried cauliflower, mushroom curry and shrimp vindalloo. All are excellent and underpriced. The staff are generous with raita and perfectly cooked rice. You owe it to yourself to eat in a place like this which doesn't serve bland buffet food. I have been there three times already and this is a real gem. Easy to park there and very friendly. But definitely not for a woman eating alone at night. Unfortunately, the food is good. Which means I continue to order from India Cafe, despite the fact that delivery has never been faster than 1 hr 30 min. This evening, I placed my delivery order at 6:59pm. My food arrived at 9:24pm. When I called the restaurant at 9:12pm to inquire if my order was forgotten (hoping I would at least have my order before the restaurant closed at 10) I was told simply, flatly... "that order is on the way." Good enough, I suppose, which sums up this restaurant. The food is good enough, and the delivery staff kind enough, that I return, always at my own risk. After doing some research we ended up ordering food for Take Away @ India Cafe, White Plains. Its a small place. You are greeted by pleasant Indian food smell as soon as you enter. The Uncle behind the counter was friendly. We ordered for Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken Pepper Roast. We also ordered 3 Naans to go with it. They can alter the level of spiciness here, so we asked for Spicy Food. He told us the food would take 25 mins to get ready. Both the dishes were Amazing, especially the Chicken Pepper Roast. Both the dishes came with Rice, which was of good quality and was tempered with Cumin Seeds & Cardamom. For One Naan that you order, you get two pieces which were large. Only Issue was that the Naan was also Fat... We personally prefer thinner ones.. But maybe they would alter that for you if you specify.. Portion Size was good. The menu is deep enough for all tastes. It's not the best place for a sit down, actually far from it but if you focus on the food it won't bother you. I wish there was a review with no stars. My husband & I wanted a quick bite to eat on Valentines Day so we thought it would be a good idea to go here. We walked in saw 3 guys sitting down at a table across from us. We placed our order with a guy that was running around like a chicken without its head. After about 20 mins, more men joined the 3 that were sitting down. Eventually it was a group of about 10-13 guys. Apparently they thought it was ok to discuss they're stupid cricket group schedule in an restaurant. After about 30 min's, we walked over to the guy and told him that we want everything to go . We did not want to enjoy our meal with a bunch of guys screaming about cricket. Another guy came up to us with a receipt to sign, I took a look and it was NOTHING THAT WE ORDERED . He went in the back and realized it was the wrong receipt and charged us for the wrong order ! Came back and had us sign the right receipt. This was about 40 min's later! After another 10 min's I got frustrated and walked over to the front and asked how long ? There was a take out bag sitting there. THAT WAS OUR FOOD! Sitting there for 10 mins, but luckily I asked to make sure it was the right order. By that time the naan was stone cold (which was also the case when we ordered delivery from them 2 weeks ago). I had them re-make the naan's we ordered. And realized that instead of Paneer Tikka, they prepared Paneer makhni. To top it off, the guy that came up to us with the receipt DIDN'T EVEN WORK THERE AND WALKED AROUND THE PLACE AS IF HE OWNED THE PLACE. A friend lives in the area so he brought us to this new restaurant when we were visiting his house. Apparently there is a large Indian community in the area (who knew!) The place looks brand new and the ambience very pleasant: wooden tables and new fixtures. It's a very small place that I'd suggest for a date. We've seen a few people come for take out as well. The food. I rarely eat Indian food but do love my naan and curry and other goods. I've ordered a few staples: samosa, chicken tikka masala, rice and naan. The bread is freshly baked - hit the right spot! Nothing is better than dipping freshly baked bread into that heavy sauce. The menu has tons of vegetarian options if you are into that kind of thing (I am not:)) I quite enjoyed my food and the prices are definitely making this place an affordable choice. I had a couple bites of what my friends ordered but can't recall what exactly it was. My Indian friend gave this spot kudos: natives giving high praise to a restaurant is a definite plus. The only downside I can think of is the size of the place. It's only a few tables so fills up fast. Finally! Indian food that tastes like being back in India without the layers of grease. Went here on a whim and so glad I stopped by. Ordered online and my food was ready within 15 minutes (and projected time was 10-35 minutes), so that started me off on the right foot. I spoke with the gentlemen in the front only to find that one of them is from Kerala and when asked, he said that his masala dosa was the real thing. Obviously I had to test that claim, since I've missed having it for breakfast for a few months. I now feel remiss for not getting here sooner. This is an excellent, excellent value. Came with the spouse, we both had the $9.00 lunch special. This is served from a steam table - there were three protein choices - butter chicken, chicken curry or tandoori chicken, presented as large chunks of breast meat. There were at least four vegetable choices, eggplant, channa masala, mushroom and what looked like onion bhajis. I am not sure of the exact protocol, but we each choose two of the chicken dishes and two vegetables. These are plated by the server onto a tiffin tray, with rice. Excellent fresh, hot naan arrived later, along with the samosas and samosa chat we also ordered. The butter chicken was the killer, with a depth of flavor that I have not experienced in the US. The other chicken dishes were very good, as were the savory vegetable dishes. We didn't have room for the crisp samosas and had to take them home, so we concentrated on the chat, which topped with chick peas and more veggies, was almost meal sized in itself. You don't really need a starter at lunch, the special will suffice. A dosa, going to another table, looked great if you need a vegetarian option - although the vegetables on the buffet should work well. Will return for lunch in and take out dinner. The decor is nondescript and it feels like a place in Queens. Not a place for a first date, unless said date is a bargain craving foodie. read more

Happened to visit a friend in Whiteplains and ended up going to this little restaurant. It seems to be newly opened. We've tried their Kerla fish fry, Chicken lollipops and Goat biryani. All the dishes were really good, tasty and fresh. Fish fry was really well complimented with crispy curry leaves. I asked about the biryani to the chef, as it was very different from else where, and he told me that it was a fusion of malabar and mughalai biryani. It's a must try. While this place has all the expected and familiar mainstays of Indian restaurants (such as biryani, chicken tikka masala, aloo gobi, saag paneer), what makes this Indian cafe a real special stand out is not only in the variety of south Indian offerings, but they also dabble a bit in "Mirch," which is "Indo-Chinese" or Chinese food one would encounter in India. I suggest taking a tasting tour of south India: From Tamil Nadu: Dosa (which comes on a platter with sambar and two chutneys), or do as I did, and order off menu and get "Sambar vada," which is a bowl of piping hot sambar with two medhu (soft) vadas. Filling and homey. Note: There are several Chettinad selections on the menu, which bridges the foods of Tamil Nadu and Kerala! :) From Kerala: The Naadan Fish Curry is a *MUST* to try. It's unusual, tasty, tangy, and special, and served up authentically. Very delicious! Kerala Chicken Curry is also a great stand out, served up in a coconut infused gravy with the toasted tadka of mustard, chili pepper and curry leaf. Also worth mentioning is the Kallummakka Fry (mussels) which are intensely seasoned and a dry stir fry (no heavy gravy). Protein packed and a nice punch of flavor! From Goa: Must try the chicken vindaloo or the Tandoori Prawns! And Indo-Chinese, Mirch? Try the Gobi-Chilly (which I guess is Gobi Manchurian), their fried rice, or their chicken lollypop:) The management really put a lot of effort into making the space clean and bright, a HUGE improvement over how the space used to look back when New China Star previously occupied the space. The service is good and friendly. From a price-point, it's a good value. And if you are looking for something NOT on the menu, just ask! They might be able to accommodate off menu requests. This has got to be the best kept secret in White Plains. The food (both Chettinad and Malabar cuisine) is exceptional. Perfect balance of tangy and spicy. There are many unique dishes like Nadan fish curry (made with a special tamarind) along with Mussels and Calamari fry. read more

It's really nice food and the naan is killing me Fact that white plains has a few Indian places which all have lunch specials..but the India Cafe's are hands down..damn good. The rice was perfect. This is a staple of all good food. I was very happy with the lamb! It tasted as lamb should. Had a perfect hint of spices (next time I go, I'll ask for it to be hit with a few hits of dried pepper along with biriyani) Everyone who likes traditional Pakistani/Indian/Nepalese will dig this food. It's a large menu. My only bummed out part was how tiny the "standard" size of their mango lassi-My humble opinion is..it made me feel so stupid to be walking with a lidded kiddie cup filled with a lassi that well ..didn't meet my Expectations (I've had this at every Indian restaurant I've ever gone too..) The other surprise was the alo Gobi..everyone has a riff on this standard..I had to add a hotter curry to it when I got home) other than that.,if you'd like your food a bit hotter make sure to ask as it's mild for those who eat it on a regular basis. This place just opened, so I'm leaving room for improvement. The food was on point, I got the chick peas and my buddy got the chicken vindaloo which was really tasty. Portions were very generous for the price! We got it to go and waited in the dining room, it did take about 20 minutes which was kind of long. However, it was the end of the night so maybe they already put stuff away. The guy at the front was pretty friendly and explained everything satisfactorily. My biggest complaint and reason for docking stars is the ambiance. Taking into account its only been open a month or so, they still need to do better. Paper cups on tables? Plain white paper place mats? The walls are completely barren save for the security cameras which I thought was pretty funny. It kind of had a sanitarium feel to it with all the white & cameras.
