Had my first gel mani with Tham today, after a recommendation from a coworker, and she exceeded all expectations! It's honestly the most precise manicure I've ever had. Also, surprisingly one of the quicker ones as well. She is so accurate and gets the polish so close to your cuticle (but doesn't touch it at all) that I know this is a mani that will last a full 2-3 weeks. Thank you, Tham! When I make an appointment to get my nails done, I expect at least decent customer service. The two experiences I've had with In Style have been the worst nail care experiences I have EVER had. My nail technician was rude, undermining, and had a terrible attitude with any questions I asked. She was not gentle with my hands, making two of my finger nail beds bleed and rolling her eyes when I would say "ow". There were several times during the session that I wanted to walk out/start crying. I wish I could blame just one technician but I've had two different ones from this business and they were both terrible. Not to mention cutting my nails to short and not listening to what I wanted. My nails had suffered a horrible full set from another nail salon but Thew saved them! I had called an hour ago before I went in and they let me come in the same day. Thew was professional and super nice. She rescued my nails from a horrible job done by another salon. My nails did not hurt after she removed the mess that was done. Instead after she was done my nails felt even better. My nails have not chipped or fallen off in four weeks. This is the best job I have had done! I went in for the first time about a week ago for a pedi. I was asked what type I wanted (basic, deluxe etc...) I really just wanted the basic pedi but really felt pressured by multiple employees to get the deluxe which was significantly more money, but I caved in and agreed. I was asked what fragrance of lotion, exfoliant and mask I wanted and I chose the charcoal one. Instead, they brought chocolate which I didn't see as a big issue until I smelled it and it smelled awful to me. The pedi, massage and paraffin wax were great as well as the little snow flakes she painted on my big toys. However, less than a week later, my paint started chipping off and the polish on one nail came off completely a few days later while wearing boots. I likely won't return. read more

These are the following criteria I look for in a good nail salon: Cleanliness: First and foremost. The place looks new and spotless. The floors are clean enough to eat off of and the pedicure tubs each have their own cleaning brush. They provide a personal nail kit for $1 that includes your own nail file, buffer, toe separators. A personal pumice sponge is another $1. I like the idea of having items that are exclusive to me, so I gladly pay. The autoclave was located in the back corner. The tools that were used on me were presented in a cup with Barbacide (the blue disinfectant). Perks: I was offered a drink when I got there. I saw that there were numerous bottles of wine in a wine rack on the wall (rear right) and sodas and water in the wine fridge. I have to assume is the wine is complimentary since they'd have to have a liquor license to sell. It was lunch time when I went during a work day so I will need to go back after work some night to explore this option! Perk 2: The chair. An amazing beautiful leather massage chair. It did things to me I never knew a chair could do. It had the regular back massager plus a butt/hip massager that was heavenly. Friendliness: Was greated quickly and pleasantly. There was only one other customer there so I was immediately seated for a mani-pedi. Polish - saw mainly OPI colors, good selection Pain Factor: Have gone twice and the first time I got a paper cut on my toe from the new file. Second time went for full mani-pedi and didn't get nipped at all. Price: Reasonable. I was there for just over an hour and paid $37 for a In Style Basic pedicure and manicure. The pedicure included hot paraffin wax at the end. Never had that before where I didn't have to pay extra. Wait time: Have been there twice during the week at lunch and had no wait time. For the acrylics - I use to have pink and white so I try to pay attention to the salon in case I want to go back. The woman who did my mani-pedi had a very nice set of pink and whites and I have to assume they were done in house. The cost is $45 for a full pink and white set, $25 for a fill. NEVER GOING HERE AGAIN!! This $50 shellac pedicure is suppose to last 5 weeks and after ONE day the polish came off in whole on my pinky toe, seriously?! I called thinking that they'd offer to fix it or give me a refund and the lady that answered told me "No, I don't believe that happened"....WHAT?!?! I offered to send her a picture and she said "No". I have been coming to In Style on and off for about 5 years now and I have to say they are the absolute best! I grew up in Portland, so I can assure you that I have been to numerous nail salons all the metro area. I can also admit that I am very, very picky about getting my nails done and I always leave with perfect nails!! I have introduced this salon to my girlfriends and they have all made this their new nail salon. I have been there 2 times in last month and the service was not good. I was done with my mani before they even started on my friends. Well, they put the foil to take her shellac off and left it on for 30 minutes. She ended up taking her own polish off. For 2 mani's, that we made reservations for, we were there over an hour and a half. They over booked and they are expensive. And insult to injury, they charged me $.75 to use my debit card without telling me. What a joke. Overall, shellac only lasted 4 days before it started to lift, my art I got on my one nail for Valentine's Day was smudgy and not filled in all the way and they didn't even apologize to my friend for waiting 45 minutes for them to start her nails. Worst experience ever. I waited over an hour 1/2 for nails, was told it was $28 multiple times, then all of a sudden the guy wanted to charge me $45. When he was putting my nails on he was yanking my wrist shouting at me to stop moving. Told him I wanted my nails to have a round shape and he wanted to charge me $10 just for shaping. I said no, and he started clipping my nails into a round shape so I said "just to make sure, you know I just want regular square right?" He proceeded to drop the scissors on my hand and roll his eyes at me. I even brought a friend to them and left her to get hers done and now I'm sitting at a different salon waiting to get mine fixed. The nail technician seemed too busy/uninterested in doing my gel pedicure. She didn't massage them very well or for very long, and when I picked out a nail color, she told me they didn't have it. I picked another color, she did my toes as quickly as she could. My friend and I got the exact same pedicure and got charged two different prices... so I'm not sure what that means. read more

Finally, a nice nail salon close to home. First, I agree with the previous reviewer, this place is so clean and they did an excellent job making it comfortable and inviting. The atmosphere is very friendly and you will be offered a drink as soon as you come in, bottled water, wine, tea, soda...your choice. The massage chairs are very high quality and do a fine job on working out kinks. You will get a complete and well done manicure and pedicure, not some rushed, crappy, version of a mani/pedi like you will find in many nail salons. The price is amazingly low considering the quality of service. I should also mention that I have never made an appointment and yet I have never had to wait. And lastly, ask for Ava! She is the best! I was being too lazy to drive out to my usual salon. There were moments during my shellac mani that I wanted to walk out. Let me set the scene... I came in without an appointment and all the ladies were helping customers. No big deal-it was my day off and I wasn't in a rush. After about 10 minutes of waiting, I was seated and my mani began. It was going well. Then two ladies came in for pedis and that's where the discomfort began. My nail technician started "rushing" my mani. She began tugging at my hands and continued to look over her shoulder as if to check in on the other ladies that came in after me. I started to get a bit irritated, seeing that I had waited patiently like everyone else. This continued for the next 20 minutes. I don't expect to have a full blown conversation, but asking me how my day was going or building some sort of rapport would be nice. At the very least, make eye contact. That's what makes customers return---a positive experience. The salon is clean, I can't complain about that. But, for $30 for a shellac, I feel a little cheated. My nail bar offers a shellac for the same price, but you get the entire "relaxing" experience plus a glass of wine or beverage. And may I add a smile and a little conversation. I would've gone 2 stars based off of my experience, but even through all her rushing, she did a good job. Next time, I'll make the drive out to my nail bar and enjoy my experience. read more

I really dislike this place for a variety of reasons. 1. They did not actually have time for me, they just rushed through their previous service to obtain my business. 2. My shellac polish job was terrible. It chipped off within 2 days. They rushed my service for the next walk in. 3. I got nipped so many times, I bleed and no antiseptic. 4. I saw the lady in the station next to me not sanitize her implements. 5. The lady was sooooo rude that did my nails. 6. My massage was 1 min long. Why get a manicure and not polish change then? I was told that she was a little behind and I was directed to a pedi chair and then instructed to place my feet into the water. Every time I come in here, and this is now my 4th time, they always turn me away and say they are busy. There is not a lot of people in there and yet they never ask me to stay. This place became my go-to because my office was nearby and they were open late enough that when I worked past 5, I could still get my nails done (within reason)! The space is clean and bright, with plenty of spots for both manicures and pedicures. I love that they give you your own nail kit for just $1 (and at $1, every time I forgot mine - which was often - I wasn't crying about having to get a new one...now I have a ton of them...). Their techs can be pretty hit-or-miss, even from service to service, and I will admit that I've had not-so-great experiences here, but now that I don't go here anymore, I'm willing to divulge the name of my favorite nail tech :) One night (early January maybe?) I came in and was sent to a male nail tech I had never seen before - I guess he must have been new. His name was Kenny, and I think he's their only guy, or was at the time. He isn't allowed to do pedicures (kind of a weird system, but ok - I assume it has to do with newer people and training), but his shellac manicures are fantastic. It makes me crazy when they don't give you enough time under the UV light before the next coat, as I've had more than one manicure smudged when they go at it with the acetone after the topcoat, and it's not quite ready yet. Kenny takes his time with each nail, ensuring an even coat and also giving the other hand plenty of time under the UV light. So, he's not the fastest tech, but boy is he thorough! The extra time probably adds up to something like an extra 5ish minutes total on my manicure, and that extra 5-8 minutes consistently gave me an extra 2-4 days on my gel manicure, so to me it's totally worth it. As for other services with other techs - pretty standard 3-star experience. Pedicures come with a complimentary paraffin wax treatment at the end which is a nice touch. Sometimes they offer drinks and sometimes they don't, so it's not terribly consistent in terms of service. Regular polish color selection is pretty good, but in terms of shellac colors, I've seen better selections elsewhere. Still, not a bad selection. Prices here are pretty standard, I'd say, so nothing to rave about but also nothing to cry about. (Keep in mind I live in the DC metro area, so I'm not sure if the average prices are different around Portland.) I'd still be going to InStyle to see Kenny if my project in Portland hadn't ended - now I'm in NYC and on the hunt for a new go-to :( read more

This place has some nice touches that make me really like it. For istance, when they give you a nail file kit, its a convenient box rather than a flimsy, cheap ziplock bag. And, they have a great selection of polish colors. I'd go back if I wanted something special like a design on my nails or a particular color for a special occasion. Otherwise, I think Ill go somewhere more affordable where they value my patronage a little more. The major con, PRICEY!!! ($$$) I paid $76 for an acrylic fill, shelac polish and the most basic of pedicures. Other places tend to be between $55-$60 for all of this in my experience. They didnt even offer me a menu of pedicure options. They stay pretty busy so I would recomend an appointment and dont expect the royal treatment, they dont offer even a glass of water. read more

They have a large selection of colors and design choices like cat eye, chrome and ombre. Katie has been my technician from the beginning and has always done an amazing job, Shallac mani and Pedi's. Okay. Oh man, I was really hoping this place would be okay. I mean, it's in Bridgeport right? I read the other reviews and decided to give it a shot. But it sucked. We had to wait 15 minutes past our appointment time to sit down. Then we had to wait 20 minutes, while in our chairs, for someone to come over and put water in our pedicure chairs. And it was about another 10 minutes until we started. I didn't mind that they weren't super talkative. Pedicure was fine. Then they made us sit in a cramped corner to dry our nails before the wax, which was supposedly included, and that was uncomfortable. They were super bossy to my friend who came with me and the wax was haphazardly applied and was burning my feet. I was then charged $3 extra, for what I don't know. And then they forgot to give my friend her debit card back. So overall, not great. Will not go back. read more

(Because I didn't have time when I originally went in) Asked for shellac to be painted on them, and they changed me TWENTY ONE DOLLARS. $21. For nail polish to be painted on that took a whole ten minutes. EXTREMELY OVERPRICED. Not worth my money and will never go back again. I would not recommend. OH--- and they charge you $.75 to run your card as well lol if you're gonna charge that much for services don't be so cheap to charge people to run their card. read more

In Style Nails is my favorite place to get my nails done. I've gotten mani/pedis, Shellac manicures and paraffin waxes done here several times and I'm always happy with how my nails turn out. Especially with my Shellac manicures because they last for about 2-3 weeks; my nails usually grows out before the Shellac even begins to chip. This nail salon is very clean. They make sure that you have your own nail kit (you can bring your own or purchase one to keep that's in a cute case for a few dollars) and that the tools they use are disinfected. There's a great wide variety of nail polish colors and brands to choose from. The leather massage chairs are amazing, and all the nail technicians make sure that you're comfortable. The nail technicians also pay great attention to your nails. But I think what really makes a difference is if you request the same nail technician for each visit because they tend to pay even more attention to your nails. read more
