Do not take your car to Import Auto Repair (IAR) for repairs. Instead, go to a trustworthy dealership. I own an MB C-300, and when the engine light came on, I took it to IAR because it was a local shop, and the nearest dealership is 80 miles away. IAR ran a diagnostic (charging $200) and determined that the air injection reactor pump was broken. They ordered the part and replaced it (costing $800). However, two days later, the engine light came back on. I returned the car to IAR, and they told me that Bosch must have sent a defective part. They ordered a new pump and replaced it again. But just two days later, the engine light came on once more. This time, IAR ran more tests and told me that a module was broken and needed replacement at the dealership since they didn't have the tools to fix it. So, I took my car to the dealership. However, the dealership recommended running a diagnostic again because the module that IAR identified was expensive and non-refundable. If they pre-ordered the part and it turned out I didn't need it, I'd still have to pay for it. After running their own diagnosis, the dealership discovered that a fuse was missing, which was causing the issue. They added the fuse and fixed the problem. I went back to IAR and told the owner, Carl, that a fuse had been missing, implying that they hadn't properly checked the car. Carl denied this, stating they had never touched any fuses and abruptly ended the conversation by saying, "Goodbye." How professional! When I got home, I reviewed the invoice from the first repair, and to my surprise, there was a charge for a fuse. This meant that either IAR had worked on a fuse, or they charged me for a part that was never actually used. I called Carl and mentioned the fuse. He chuckled and told me they had "put in and out fuses." So, it turns out, IAR was the one who forgot to replace the fuse. The bottom line is that Carl runs a dishonest business, and now I'm questioning whether the air injection reactor pump was ever actually broken in the first place. read more

I'm a student at WSU and this was the best car service shop I have ever been to, Carl is the owner and he's super fair in his prices and does a great job. I got my car fixed by Jerry's auto service the first time in Pullman and the prices were extreme, plus I'm now having to get my car fixed for the thing they supposedly fixed at Jerry's. Carl did a much better job with my car and was a lot more fair with the prices. I had to bring my car to him twice in one week and he should have charged me 150 the second time around but only charged me 60 because he felt bad that I had a different issue. This is definitely the only car service shop I will be bringing my car to in the Pullman area from now on. read more

I cannot say enough positive things about ICS. We were in a BIND with my daughter's car having a special key lock and it was stranded at Les Schwab as they were not able to get it off. The dealership we purchased it form EVENTUALLY did the right thing, but Carl was an absolute god send. He offered to go to Les Schwab (which he did multiple times) to take a look at the car to see if he could get the bolts off (my daughter attends WSU and we are in Bellevue). We did not end up needing his services but his professionalism and courteous nature was certainly an amazing gesture. Will definitely have her go there for future! read more

Coming from Seattle, I had my choices of VW dealers and independent shops. I was worried about the move to Pullman since the nearest dealer is Spokane. ICS is, by far, the best independent auto repair shop I have ever dealt with. Service was fast and extremely honest, even to the point of trying to help me get a hardship warranty extension. Carl is extremely friendly and very helpful. Wheel bearings, brakes and a new catalytic converter would have been done in a single day if it weren't for a shipping mistake. Next morning though, the GTI was humming like new. Highly recommend going to ICS. They're fast, honest, friendly, and helpful. read more

I brought my car to this shop to have an issue looked at and was charged a significant fee ($70-75) just to have the car "diagnosed" with a "major problem." Nothing else was done to the car, other than to take a few minutes to analyze the mechanics and notify me that I had a "major problem" - all for $75! I went to another shop in the area, and the shop took 5 minutes to diagnose my car--and find the "major issue"--free of charge! As someone who likes to compare service and get 2nd opinions (like you would with a medical issue), its safe to say that I was not happy with ICS charging such a high fee to tell me what a competing shop told me for FREE. The shop also quoted me a significantly higher free for potential work done to fix the issue - compared to other shops, and was very close to what the dealership (eh, stealership) charged. In summary, the shop is good at figuring out problems, but charges too much for the work, and charges too much just to determine the issues you may have. There are more affordable alternatives in the area you should first look into. Buyer beware: shop around. read more

I've had two good experience with Imported Car Service. Both times, they've done good work, and been both fair and trustworthy. When we moved to Moscow and started looking for a good mechanic, I got a few recommendations to check out Electrical Specialists. But when I called them, as soon as the word "Volvo" came out of my mouth, they said, "We don't really work on those, but you should call Imported Car Service in Pullman." So I did, and I'm very glad I did. The first time, I came in because my reverse lights weren't going on. I'd already eliminated the easy stuff (bulbs, fuses, etc.), and the internet lead me to believe it was a sensor attached to my gear box. I'd bought the sensor, and spent about 4-hours in my driveway trying to get it in, and ultimately failing. So, when I got to ICS I told them the story and handed them the replacement part. Turns out that was the correct part, but it required lowering the gearbox to get at. They charged me a fair labor rate and did the job in an afternoon. More recently, I came to ICS because I was losing coolant and having trouble with current fluctuations coming out of my voltage regulator. I'd had another shop estimate $400 to replace just the regulator, but ICS charged about $500 to replace the whole alternator, and I figured that was more than fair to get an entire new alternator. Turns out the coolant was leaking from my overflow tank, and they replaced that with a new one for a very fair price. Unlike every Volvo dealer I've ever been to and many independent shops, ICS never tried to upsell me on services I didn't need. They're friendly and easy to talk with. When my new alternator was delayed coming in, they were quick to communicate and gave me options for picking up or leaving my car there. It's hard to find a trustworthy, capable mechanic. Especially when you're looking for someone to work on European cars on the Palouse. I'll definitely be bringing my car back to ICS as long as I own it. read more

THE BEST auto mechanics I've ever been to. They are friendly, their service is fast, affordable, and incredibly honest. They have very knowledgeable mechanics, who will give you the straight up truth. There have been countless times they could have given me the runaround - when i got my first car at 16, the engine would pour white smoke out after driving a few minutes. I took it down, they said "Oh, your radiator hose is dripping on your exhaust", tightened it up, and sent me on my way. Since then, I've taken all of my cars there, and will continue to do so. I recently took my Subaru WRX in to have a 60,000 mile tuneup, and their service was superb, and super fast! I had it back within 24 hours. They will offer to give you a ride when you drop your car off. Absolute top-notch service all around. You can trust them! Carl is an awesome guy! read more

What providence (and good judgement) that the tow driver brought her car to this shop in Pullman. Being so far away, we felt helpless, but Carl took great care of us: estimating the problem, fixing it (without piling on any unnecessary repairs), thoroughly test driving it (twice) and helping get it back in the hands of a trusted family friend (yeah, Billy!) who offered to drive it back to Seattle for her (- she had to leave Pullman without her beloved Subaru) We couldn't be more pleased. read more

I recently bought a car and drove it to pullman. A week after buying it I got a check engine light. I did some research on my own and quickly realized that I was in deep. Luckily I took it to these guys and they helped me a lot. I found out that the car I bought I was scammed into buying a car with problems but these guys helped me figure out the problems. I walked out only spending minimal compared to what I expected and they helped explain everything to me. I suggest going to these guys! This place charged me 112 bucks as examine fee, just to figure out my car battery died. Even after I told them i just need to replace a battery!! The estimate cost was around 200 bucks to replace the battery, and ended up to be 297 bucks. You can certainly choose this place, long as u feel free to get cheated and robbed. :) read more

First off, I drive a Saab 900S. I had been hearing a different sound from the engine bay for a few days and last night it started smoking and spitting melted, plastic pieces about two minutes after I lifted the hood to take a look. After reading all the good reviews about this place, I went down this morning to see if they could help me with it. As soon as I mentioned I had a Saab, the guy at the counter started shaking his head and told me they no longer work on Saabs because they were losing money on it and that it's purely a business decision. Alright, completely understandable. I asked if he could come outside just to take a quick look and maybe give me an idea of what was wrong, and he interrupted me with a very rude "no". Considering all the reviews about their great customer service and how knowledgeable they are about Saabs, I figured even if they wouldn't fix it, they might be able to help me find out what's wrong before I take it up to Spokane to get it repaired. Who knows, he might have just been having a bad day, despite his relatively cheerful exchange with the customer ahead of me. However, with the attitude I received I would not recommend this place to anybody I know, especially other Saab owners now that they won't even take a quick peek. read more

Went in to have some odd noises when accelerating from a stop diagnosed. Mentioned that I knew there was a check engine light and that I had already had this diagnosed. I went back to pick up the vehicle after receiving a call stating they were done and got some surprising news. I was told that there was no noise at all in the vehicle(it still exists) when accelerating. I was also told that I should replace my gas cap with an OEM gas cap. This would make sense if the gas cap on the vehicle wasn't one that I had purchased the week prior to this "diagnosis" at the VW dealership in Spokane. In the end they had no idea what was wrong with my vehicle other than the bad O2 sensor that I told them about when I arrived. Everyone was very nice when I spoke to them but I did not see any of the great diagnostic skills I read about here when I made my appointment. I was charged $170+ for no real diagnostic at all. They couldn't hear any sounds that I and anyone who has ridden in the car has heard on a daily basis. They didn't recognize an OEM gas cap that even has German on it. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend ICS to anyone after my experience. read more

One of the most expensive shops in town. And, I've taken my vehicle there two times and both times they diagnosed more wrong than was actually wrong -- so the price was much higher, of course. These guys will take your car in and, without telling you any sort of pricing, start doing work. Had my car towed to another shop after a $1300 quote to fix a coolant leak including a $77 flat fee for a pressure test (more than double what many other places will charge). While I can't speak to the quality of their work I know they will perform work without consent and then have no problem billing you for their time after the fact. Very disappointing, take your car somewhere else if you don't want a sneak attack on your wallet. Dishonest. read more

Our fan was making strange noises so I called and Carl said to come in, he'd listen to it. Turns out a mouse had built a nest in the fan motor! Carl fixed it quickly and charged a very reasonable amount. He and his office staff were also extremely friendly and and nice. We will definitely use ICS in the future for both our cars. read more

Strait up, honest guys. No one that works there will give you any sort of run around. They will take you into the shop and show you exactly whats broken on your car. Their labor prices are very low compared to other places in town, and they get stuff done quick. Most importantly, though, they are mechanically competent. I can only vouch for their competence in German diesel car's, but I cant overstate how hard it is to find a shop that knows what they are doing with a German diesel. They require special oil, special services, etc. I have tried several other shops, and they try to sell me oil changes using some diesel pick up truck oil, not the special high tech diesel synthetic required. I was sold on ICS after seeing that they were some of the few that put the right oil in these cars. If they know about such a rare type of car like a TDI, I bet anyone else will have just as good of luck taking any other imported car to them. read more
