If you're a seafood fan, then you need to get to know Garfish…read more Much like its Manly and Kirribilli siblings, the Crows Nest restaurant works on blackboard specials that list the chef's picks of the day alongside a series of cooking and sides options. The deal is you design your own meal, but if that sounds a little too daunting, they do cite recommendations (eg. the Swordfish is best spiced and served with the cous cous salad). In a clever nod to newspaper wrapped fish and chips, there's even a brown paper menu listing the rest of the a la carte delights. And yes, there are even some red meat and vegetarian dishes. The service here is consistently warm and friendly, with much appreciated help given to moving tables and chairs around to accommodate for both a toddler and a babe-in-arms. We also came bearing a birthday cake, which was brought out with some (suitably embarrassing) ceremony before being served with a dollop of delicious vanilla bean icecream. The fact that the restaurant is also BYO is a just bonus, making it an even easier decision to return for future birthdays and fun times.

In other words, you're given a list of the day's offering of fish, along with different preparation methods and sides. You can't really choose a bad combination as all the fish and sides work perfectly together. Since there were several types of fish I had never heard of before, I referred to the TV screen which describes each fish's origin, taste, and texture. There's also a menu that's filled with other seafood plates (I'll be getting the Snapper Pie next time!). I ordered the roasted Hapuka, a flakey white fish from New Zealand, served with a salad of fennel, parsley, and kaffir lime leaves. There was a bright sauce made with lime juice, olive oil, and chilies. The entire dish was absolutely fantastic. The fish was roasted to perfection, with a crispy skin and light showering of fleur de sel. The salad was the epitome of fresh and summery. For dessert, I had the Belgian waffles with clotted cream and strawberries. Well, I definitely had a complaint about the dessert. It was WAY too small! Just kidding--but it was one of the best waffles I've had. Service at Garfish was stupendous. Our waitress couldn't have been more friendly or accommodating. She helped everyone choose his or her fish combination individually. When one of my friends spilled her drink, the mess was cleaned posthaste and she was immediately offered a refill. Everyone at the table was very satisfied with our experience at Garfish.

We had a lovely meal here. We have had Brazilian barbecue at several places in California and Texas…read morebut the meat here was far superior. The meats were perfectly seasoned and not overly salted. The manager, Daiana, was so sweet and made us feel welcomed. We are gluten free and she went out of her way to let us know what was safe for us to eat. She checked in on us multiple times to make sure all was going well. The atmosphere of the restaurant was very nice with a good vibe. Even though there were quite a few people there the restaurant wasn't loud and we were able to talk easily. It was chilly outside but they had heaters going to keep it nice and warm inside. The only things I would recommend are a salad bar with veggies and cheeses and a sign to let the meat servers know when we need a break. It's hard to say no to all the delicious meats they were bringing to our table but it was hard to keep up. 10/10 would recommend.

This is a serious meat-eaters' heaven. It's very male here at Bah-Bq. And as a gal that's quite all right, especially if the men are all suave and eager to please. And please they do! Handsome Brazilian waiters tempting all the diners as they walk by. Bring your appetite here if you want to get the 'all you can eat meat bonanza' called Churrasco $49 per person. Rarely do we go over our $30 per plate usual limit. But we've had a good week so it was a bit of a treat. And when it's time for a splurge this is the place to do it. The atmosphere is modern rustic - with rope room dividers and chic orange hanging lights with groovy timbered features - love the little lounge area where you can enjoy a drink and a chat before the feasting begins. Reminds me of the old days when dining out was a real treat and you'd always have a drink at the bar or the lounge area. That builds the anticipation and heightens the mood for food for sure. It's romantic too. (TIP: guys this could be the place to win points in the romance stakes!). The night we were there (Easter Sunday) there was live music. The host said Friday nights is when they have live music - this was a special treat just for us. I've never heard 'Girl From Ipanema' sang in Brazilian before tonite and enjoyed this exotic version with guitar and djembe percussion. One thing I don't usually comment on are the table settings - I don't mind timber, or laminex or linen - but I have to mention this - the table settings were immaculate - the tables themselves were a deep dark polished timber, gleaming like a mirror. So spectacularly clean. We chose this place cos our friend Scott LOVES meat. Him and meat go way back - in fact his first job was working in the Wellington Abattoirs out near Dubbo. It turns out this meat destination decision was perfect. Once giving the waiter the green light to the Churrasco for three all we needed to do was sit back and let the magic begin. And we didn't have to wait long. First the sides arrived (assorted hot breads including to-die-for cheese bread, polenta, some kind of banana something - it was lovely anyway; thick cut potato chips; potato salad; rice and flaked almonds; a stew of black beans; green salad) and sauces (hmmm the chilli and molassas-like sauce is amazing!) and home made fresh salsas arrived. Then came the procession of 'straight-off-the-barbecue' meats on massive steel rods (some looked like swords) led by pork sausages which were so yummy! Next up was the gorgeous barbecued haloumi cheese. (If you're vegetarian then you may want to stop reading here). Next came some cooked to perfection juicy medium rare rump steak which when sliced right before our eyes by the waiter showed off a gorgeous red-bronzed centre; after that came some oh-so-succulent lamb, two types of chicken, prawns, honey glazed pork, more lamb this time pesto chunks. Then more, more and even more fresh barbecued meat was offered - some arriving on swords while other offerings displayed like crown jewels - set in little platters. We accepted these delicious offerings until we could fit in no more - well apart from the barbecued fresh banana and spicy pineapple which we could fit into our 'dessert tummies'. Our party of four agreed this was a wonderful feast and great value. So happy that a Brazilian BBQ restaurant like Bah-bq is in Crows Nest cos the other closest Brazillian BBQ places were either Norton Street Leichhardt or Taylor Square Darlinghurst. This is just a short hop skip and jump for us. I'm definitely jumping at the chance of going back to Bah-bq again and hopefully it won't be too long.

Hmm something fishy indeed. I was recommended this fish and chips shop by a foodie friend. I…read morethought that meant I was in for a treat - some quality fish, some perfectly cooked chips - not too soggy, not too crispy. I bought a piece of battered snapper and a handful of chips. It was certainly edible. The fish was nicely cooked, albeit a bit slimy. The chips however were brown, like triple dipped, hanging about the cooker too long overdone. There weren't even many crunch ones or soggy ones, just brown ones. I'm also not sure if it was the overdone chips or the fish but there was an ever so slight whiff of something not quite right. I feel OK today which is a good sign all was OK but I have to say the chips let me down and I don't think I'll be going back. My sister, who picked them up, said she almost didn't go into the shop because of the way it looked. Personally I'm not so fussed about the decor but if a fish and chip shop slips on one of their two biggest sellers I wouldn't even try to justify it to my butt why it's a good idea.

BUT try the tartare! Rich, but homemade by owner and at 40c, an absolute steal.

These are available to be fried up whilst you order, though it's advisable to order ahead, as we did, so that it was packaged and ready for us when we arrived 15 minutes later. The prices are mercifully decent and service very cheery, especially considering it was the Friday night boom. Our whiting was a cracking blend of crispiness on the outside and tender flesh on the inside, while the chips were chunky and crunchy, the best mixture for any easy as pie Friday night chippie!
