Last week, the better half asked me "do you want to try a local Chinese smokehouse".. and obviously the answer was a screaming yes. Yan represents the culinary maturation of Wolli Creek. What was once airport marshland, became a high density apartment sprawl with a sprinkling of convenience food, and now the area is evolving into a hot spot of flavours, with Yan at the front of the pack. Call me jaded, but when I read "Asian chimichurri", my 'spidey sense' warns of lip service fusion dining without heart or authenticity. I think this scepticism ultimately contributed to my enjoyment of the experience at Yan because the finished product told a much more refined story, it is one we look forward to enjoying again. As someone who was born in Australia but has spent half of his adult life in Asia, I've learnt to be wary of fusion dining, as it's often used as a smoke screen (..first Yelp pun!) for chefs who do not understand either cuisine. It was a pleasant experience to see these fears go unrealised at Yan, best evidenced in the pork belly, representing a best of both worlds flavour profile, as opposed to the half baked mish mash we've experienced in other fusion ventures. I believe we were there within opening week, and the staff were beyond helpful. I'm sure we've all experienced a waitress/waiter who is so genuinely concerned with your enjoyment that they must be an owner. We left feeling full, as if our horizons had been ever so slightly broadened, and with a list of friends to bring next time.

The atmosphere has a sense of tension, the feeling you get when you want a restaurant to surprise you with good food, drinks and price, unfortunately SOW doesn't do any of them very well. The menu in the US can be found at most road side truck stops, nothing new here only that it's slightly misplaced in Umina. Not that it shouldn't be there it's just that because of the prices of the food and drink I can't seem to believe they'll have a loyal customer base. Well not all year round. I'm surprised given the location and the cost of rents in the area they couldn't be more generous with either the servings or the prices. In fact the restaurant is far more suited to Surry Hills, and charges the same prices. There's only one healthy option on the menu an ode to vegetarians, but without any enthusiasm and priced as the most expensive, it would seem they were trying to avoid the subject. Being so close to the coast and a fishing wharf I'm surprised there is no fish on the menu smoked or not. The drinks menu is interesting and leans towards the craft beers and cocktails. The wine list is appalling and unnecessarily slim. A glass of average wine at $11.00 it's cheaper to drink in Surry Hills. Overall it's a bar that wants to be a restaurant that wants to be a bar but probably can't because of licensing. I'd definitely go back for a drink and bar snack if they reviewed their pricing. In fact it's close to being the go to place, if they could get it right and find their appropriate audience for the location. The service was good, attentive and appropriate.

The pancakes were sweet and well balanced with mascarpone! The coffee was smooth and the service friendly. We followed sweets with a brisket Rueben burger, poutine tater tots and a pumpkin salad for balance. Being a brisket lover I have high standards and this brisket measure up nicely; succulent, tasty and juicy. The salad was tasty but a few more options in the salad department would be nice(fennel citrus???). We devoured the poutine taters in no time, dripping in tasty house gravy and mozzarella. The hero of the meal was the brisket in my book, washed down nicely with a golden ale. If you enjoy southern US diner food, then you won't be disappointed with sounds on west, the jukebox tunes add to the charm! And they stock Henry's gin from distillery botanica in Erina. Great stuff.

My friends rave of this place - to the point where the staff knows them by name and waits on them hand and foot kind of deal. But it's good, tonight I got to reap the benefits. One of my favorite things about Newtown is that many restaurants are BYO. Tonight we brought in a Rose bottle to have with our dinner, and it was delectable let me tell you that. On the vegan menu there are about 15 different options. My friends said I had to try the 'Momo,' which is a dumpling either panfried or poached. An order came with about 6 and it was so yummy. Next, I ordered the vegan chow mein. I've had sooo many vegan chow mein or veggie chow meins back home that literally make me want to barf. This was not the case at all. Huge serving, lots of veggies and moist. I added some chili oil and a lil salt and I was suddenly in food heaven or food coma, I cannot tell the difference. My friends shared about five different things including a dumpling miso soup. It looked rad and by their content faces, the flavor seemed to be a winner too. Another win on King Street, with an asian fusion menu and vegan options around, this place gets a lot of love in Newtown.
