Came here with a group of friends on a Saturday night. The only booking we could get was 8:15PM for 10 people. We decided to go with the set menu to make things easier - $45 per person. I was excited to see that there was a lychee mojito on the menu, so I had to order it. 18 bucks but to be expected for cocktails in Sydney. The first two entrees came out - a pork and bean sprout dish - YUMMO and this prawn fritter which was also yummy. Then nothing came out for like 25 minutes! We were starving and then they brought out the next few mains - duck curry, deep fried prawns, chinese broccoli, a shredded prawn and chicken dish. We devoured it and was stuffed. We thought we were done but another veggie dish and crispy pork belly came out and we were had to try some. The pork belly was yummy and crispy but I could barely eat it. Then dessert came out - this warm chocolate cake with vanilla gelato - so good but we were all SO full. Ate about 1/3 of it and could barely move. I had more than half of my mojito left and couldn't finish it. We were supposed to go out dancing after but none of us could move. Great place with really delicious Thai food, but pace yourself! I made it a mission to come here for dinner, but I walked right past it! It's very dark, and the sign kind of blended into the window. After stepping into this restaurant, I was impressed. It's very beautiful inside! Food wise, I tried the Thai fried rice with pork, yum hua plee, and milk iced tea (Thai iced tea). The fried rice was good, but it was a little bland. The yum hua plee was very interesting. I have never had that before, and I'm not sure I would order that again. And the milk iced tea was ok - I detected a hint of a floral note, which I didn't care for. All the workers are very friendly here and are quick to take away any plates. read more

Bottom Line - This location is easier to get a table than their more popular Surry Hills location; and it's the same menu. Atmosphere is a bit higher-end. I came with 6 other friends on 16 October 2013, and we had a lovely dinner, eating the following: Mini Curry Puffs ($9.50) - These were a nice way to start. I'd order them again. Mini Spring Rolls ($9.50) - These were tasty; good thing I like fried food! Basil Crispy Pork ($23.00) - I remember these being more tender at the other location 5 years ago, but they're still tasty. Pad Cha w/ Pork ($18.00) - Wow this dish was very spicy! I could only eat one bite before my mouth was on fire. I wouldn't order this again, but only because it was so spicy! Massaman Duck Curry ($29.50) - This was my favourite, as well as the table's. The curry was exactly what I remembered. I wanted to order more!!! Red Duck Curry ($29.50) - This duck curry was okay, but we all preferred the roasted duck massaman curry. This dish was spicier than the massaman one. Beef Larb ($18.00) - A friend who does not like rice ordered this. He seemed to enjoy it, though it was quite spicy. Steamed Rice ($3.00/each x 6) - All but one of us ordered rice. LOVED it! Went twice during a short trip to Sydney and it was just so good. Has the betel leaf appetizer, tom yum and beef massamun both times. Beautiful presentation and delish. I will say that they are not so good with modifications to the menu I prefer mostly broth in my tom yum and mostly gravy in my curry. In the US, restaurants love me because they get to save on meat. Here they acted like they completely understood but the dishes always came out like the menu photo. Lol. It's all good. The beef is delectable and the soup is beautiful. read more

Thank you Yelp! After spotting several Thai places on Victoria Street and thinking "hhmmmm... better whip out the Yelp app and make sure I pick the best one", I chose Spice I Am, and it was some of the best Thai food I have ever had! I had a spicy noodle dish with seafood. It was pretty incredible and perfectly made. I just can't even tell you in detail, it was just perfect. PERFECT. We sat outside and had Thai beers. Yes, you are. Spicy that is! Oh. My. God. You Aussies know how to do Thai food. Friends took us here our first night in Sydney, it was just around the corner from where we were staying. I have never been hit so hard by spice, but loved it so much. We had the Whole snapper which had a lovely mango salad on top. The fish was cooked perfectly, and the chills paired well with the sweetness from the mango. The red curry was spot on, also very spicy but very delicious. We had a few other dishes that were equally as good, but I can't recall exactly what they were named. The place has a really nice style and look to it and good service as well. read more

I have such mixed feelings about this place. When we first came here I started my review off as "the Worst Thai place in Sydney!" - but certain things have changed my mind a bit. So the reason it sucked so bad at first? To start, the entree portion sizes are a joke (literally the worst I've seen in Sydney) and it's a massive rip off for Thai. To top it off, I thought it might be the only Thai place I've been to that doesn't have chicken breast (at least that was according to the waitress). Don't even try to ask for sauce- they can't give it to you and there's no way to make any modifications- everything is pre-made evidently so they can't change anything! At first I wanted to walk out but with 6 people (including overseas visitors, how embarassing right?) I think the other nicer people in my group didn't want to make a scene. But then, we got our mains. Firstly, there WAS chicken breast- the waitress didn't know what she was talking about- which was a bummer because I totally would have ordered that. Secondly, the mains were really delicious. If it weren't for the tasty mains, this place would be getting one of my worst reviews yet. However the quality of the mains does make up for the crap entrees and pretty crap service as well. If you come here, DO NOT order piddly little entrees. They are a waste. Stick to the mains and then head down the street for some post- dinner cocktails or dessert. read more

Wow this place really does live up to its name! The lay-out of this restaurant is really nice and clean and the service was great. We ordered spicy beef for entree, green chicken curry and crispy chilli chicken and WOAH was it spicy!! I love love love my spicy food and am always craving more spice. All our dishes said they were medium spice but they were wayyyy spicy than I expected. Don't get me wrong, the food was really good but just a warning is that it is very hot! We took some home for the next day and the curry was even better the next day. read more

Fast service, professional chef, good atmosphere. The roast duck massaman curry - oh ma God - so good! It's different and I don't even like spicy food, but I smashed that dish. Only $1 difference from normal beef massaman. So, totally recommend. Though, in general the prices are a bit overpriced. Came to this place on Saturday with group of 10 girls.The food was amazingly good - upper class Thai I would say. I have ordered a lychee mojito cocktail and was superb. We had a set menu and believe me we had so much food. the food was just keep coming and coming. At some stage I could not eat anymore I was so full. And then we had this amazing desert - warm chocolate cake with vanilla gelato - one of the best deserts I had in while. I was so full that I couldn't even finish that. Next time I will come here I wont have set menu is just too much but will for sure get starter main and desert. And maybe next time I will be able to finish all up. read more

The sister restaurant to the hugely popular Spice I Am in Surry Hills, the Darlinghurst Restaurant has raised the bar creating an amazing dining experience. The food is out of this world good, the atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable, the service is excellent and the staff are friendly, helpful and efficient. Oh and did I mention the food is amazing? My favourites at Spice I Am the restaurant include: Bour Tod - which is four crispy betel leafs covered with chilli sauce, crushed cashew nuts, coriander and a crispy prawn. $16 Yum Gai - A super spicy salad of shredded chicken breast, lemongrass, ginger, chilli, lime juice, coriander, eschallot and crushed roasted cashew nuts $18 Gaeng Ped Yang - Roast duck in red curry, pea eggplant, apple eggplant, kaffir lime leaf, chilli, cherry tomato, lychee, pineapple and Thai basil. $39 Moo Gob Prik Khing - Stir fried crispy pork belly, wok tossed with red curry paste, green beans, chilli and kaffir lime leaf $30 This restaurant is an amazing experience and the food is truly devine but you will most certainly pay for it. Given the higher prices I think Spice I Am Darlinghurst is the perfect spot for a special dinner where you want to push the boat out and have a few drinks. The cocktail menu is scrummy and I can admit to making a good fist of trying most on the list. My favourites though are: - Canadian Summer: Canadian Club Whisky, Absolut Rasberry vodka, French rockmelon liqueur, fresh raspberry and ruby red grapefruit juice. - Pomegrante Martini: Belvedere Vodka, Parma Pomegranate liqueur, ruby red grapefruit juice, cranberry juice and pomegranate jewels. Food was pretty good - massive selection which always frightens me a bit as tough to keep ingredients fresh with so many options. I digress - food was solid, service was terrible. This post should really just be called "Pork Belly". I'll be honest, despite being one of my fave restaurants we've tried in Surry Hills, Bodega sort of turned me off to pork belly. Everything was lovely, but the pork belly was really just a large hunk of fat. To be fair, we'd ordered way too much as usual, but the pork belly was just a bit over-the-top. Which is why I was very skeptical when all were praising the pork belly at Spice I Am, but everyone was right! Order the Moo Gob Pik Pao ($30). This is the first of two pork belly dishes on the menu. The second one is said to be spicier, but the Moo Gob Pik Pao is the signature dish and the best way to describe it would be "crispy, yet melt-in-your-mouth delicious, bites of spicy joy". We also ordered two Ho Moks ($9 each) - steamed pockets of fish curry wrapped in a banana leaf. These were tasty. Sort of a strange mushy texture, but good (surprisingly very spicy!) flavor. The last dish we had was the Yum Hua Plee ($36). Beautifully presented - it was made up of a banana flower salad with king prawns and roasted coconut. The king prawns were delicious. Might have been yummier over some sort of noodle, but the banana flower salad was an interesting texture. In addition to the food - Spice I Am has quite exquisite drinks. McKay stuck with Makers Mark on the rocks ($10). I went for the more frilly options. The Pink Lily ($18) - sweet, but refreshing vanilla vodka drink with raspberry liqueur, grapefruit juice and fresh strawberries. The Ten Cane Colada ($19) - was a little too rich for a drink. More a dessert really, but a very tasty dessert made with rum, fresh mango and coconut, and banana liqueur. read more

For entrees, we got the curry puffs and they are fantastic. Light and delicious! For mains, my wife and I both got the Pad See Ew. The flavors were a bit unbalanced (heavy on the garlic), but all in all I'd get it again. The portion was pretty large-- we both boxed some up to bring home and eat later. And the price wasn't bad at all, especially considering we had leftovers. Ambiance was nice. I'll probably be going back again. read more

We stumbled upon this place and I am very glad we did! Authentic Thai food that is so fragrant and delicious. When paying the bill, I noticed that our waitress wrote our order in Thai, that is how legit this place is. We had the lemongrass chicken and the spicy chicken salad - both fabulous and there was nothing left on our plates! Friendly service and a good selection of wines. We booked a late Sunday lunch at Spice I Am, arriving for our meal at around 2.30pm. We ordered starters and mains to share - I had the mini curry puffs, which were tasty little filled pasties that came with chilli sauce. For mains I ate a vegetable pad thai, which was really delicious - just the right blend of peanut and chilli, and filled with tofu as well as veg, which was a nice treat. Unfortunately Spice I Am is not an all-day eatery, and while we were aware of this when we booked, I did feel that we were ushered out reasonably quickly, which was a bit of a shame. Overall though it's a decent place to eat, but not somewhere I'd make a special effort to return to when I'm back in Sydney - it was just lacking that je ne sais quoi. read more

It was good but I can't see how it justifies the prices they charge. Like it was good, but it wasn't exceptional. The "spicy" dishes in my opinion and that of my wife were quite bland regarding spice. Dishes were still flavoursome "green curry chicken, pad kee Mao, crispy pork all were meant to be spicy dishes, but I was left waiting for some chilli. The food was pleasant but when I go to a Thai restaurant, I want at least the spicy dishes to be spicy. If I don't want spicy foods I'd either eat pad see eww or go to any Italian place in Sydney, I don't want to pay $20 a plate to just have some westernised watered down version of a Thai dish. We even asked for the dishes to be extra spicy. Glad we went but it isn't worth the hype. I'm not sure what all the reviews here by others are going on about how spicy their food is? We forgot to reserve at another restaurant so we wandered along the street and found Spice I Am. Our first disappointment was that we were dining with a toddler and they had no baby seats. In fact they didn't bring any chair for the baby at all. So, we let the toddler run around the hallway for a while until we stole a chair from another table. The waitresses had to keep dodging the baby, but hey, we didn't ask to be seated right near the kitchen when the restaurant was almost empty and there were plenty of places where the baby would only have been in our own way. So half of our food arrived. My chicken was quite OK. 15 minutes later the other half of the food arrived. My fellow diners agreed that the food was too spicy to eat, and barely had anything except rice. The waitress explained "that's what Thai food is like." My fellow diners, who couldn't eat the food, were from Malaysia and India, I think they can cope with Thai food. What they can't cope with is stupidly spicy Thai food. Essentially, this restaurant was a complete disappointment. The staff made no attempt to cater for the baby and didn't care that we couldn't eat the food. There's no chance we'll go back. read more

I went to this place whilst in Sydney on the recommendation of others but I can say that it really was pedestrian Thai food. I found it had no flavour besides chilli so much so that even the Tom Kha soup was unbearably spicy. The service was slow and they mixed up our bill with someone else's and struggled to take our order correctly to begin with. This decadent restaurant / lounge is overthrown with rave reviews and is the result of much success of smaller venues owned by the same management. What makes this restaurant so well loved is the artistic presentation of authentic Thai cuisine. It's spectacular to see your food brought out to you, each dish is capriciously designed for your consumption. You can sit and have a drink in the lounge before taking a table for dinner or you can jump straight into a meal. The lighting is very cool and dim - it has a stylistic ambience that privileges party and a good time. There is definitely a vibe of blessings and good fortune. The food is designed to share but you can also try a la carte. Time for Sujet Saenkham to spot check his Darlinghurst location where the front of the house is sabotaging the dining experience and will tank his business. Unfortunately the great food will never make up for the appalling service led by someone whose favorite word is "no." Of course if his metric for good service is how often that word is uttered during a quiet Monday night dinner service, or how unwelcome they achieve making you feel, or how often they mess up your check when the relief of departure is finally in prospect, then Saenkham has hit all his marks. "No," you can't sit at any of the 25 vacant all night tables. "No," you can't have a vegetarian side...and on and on it went. This location, one of his quartet of high priced Thai outlets, will mercifully limp slowly to its ultimate demise on the basis of the staff's common refrain to everything -- no. Terrible example of Thai food. The 1 star rating I give is for the ok service. A friend and I were there on a Sunday night. We both eat a lot of Thai food and thought we'd try this place. We didn't follow the rule "if there are no Thai people eating in there, don't go"...Looking at the menu the prices were a little high compared to Thai restaurants in the area and the city, but we thought it must be good if the prices are higher. I ordered the Tom Yum Goong, he ordered the Pork skewers wth peanut sauce & the deep fried spring rolls. The Tom Yum was served in a small ceramic bowl - made with coconut milk (not coconut water or plain water). I was assured it was the Tom Yum and not a curry that it looked like. There was no taste of the lemongrass or the kaffir lime leaves. There were plenty of prawns but hardly any spice ... when ordering we asked for hot (Thai hot not Australian hot) & the waitress said she would make sure there was extra chili. There was none. The dish was bland and badly made. I picked through it and realized it wasn't what I ordered. The pork was even worse. It was served again on white ceramic. The pork had been beaten and flattened till it was 5mm thick. It was about 10cm long and there were 5 of them on skewers. The peanut sauce was in a tiny white bowl not even enough to cover the measly pork serving. The spring rolls also were tiny .. they were about 5cm long and about 2.5cm in diameter. There were 6 or 7 of them. All the entres were small, unseasoned and tasteless. We also ordered 2 mains - the chicken jungle curry and the beef green curry, as well as steamed rice for 2. Both curries were badly made, not seasoned and were bland. The rice was so over cooked it was clumped together and tasteless. We asked for extra chili and we were brought "freshly sliced" (it wasn't it was clearly stale) and ground (which had been in the spice rack too long and was also stale). I've been to Thailand and the food didn't remotely resemble the country - The meals are small and overpriced. The service was ok. The decor is lovely. It's probably the worst "Thai" food I've ever tried to eat. Don't waste your time... you'll find better at a take-away. read more

Past its prime. Although this is the first time I've been here I was sorely disappointed in many aspects. They miss the mark on many points. Namely the food and pricing. Sydney is full of excellent Thai eateries at differing price points and although this restaurant was successful ten years ago it hasn't kept up with the change in scene. Namely the huge influx of Thai bringing more competition and vastly superior food to an adapting Farang palate to accept more heat.. Dining in Darlinghurst the room felt vacuous, admittedly it was a Tuesday night but on arrival they had music playing which was soon switched off. The staff although efficient seemed less than primed to offer any personality. We ordered a Watermelon cocktail yet was informed they didn't have any watermelon ! The shrimp was off the menu because of the cancellation of importation due to an outbreak of bacteria from Vietnam meaning local prawns were too expensive and for no apparent reason the duck was scratched too. We ordered the Snapper which was over cooked and dry The Tom Yam which was salty and mixed veggies with Oyster sauce which was coated in MSG. The best dish was the pork skewers as a starter. The food although acceptable to eat wasn't great by any means if you are familiar with Thai food. It was far too sweet and salty lacking balance or heat (was expecting it to pack a punch based on reviews and the name, but it was all just too sweet based off the common belief that Farangs can't handle chilli ). Admittedly with a Thai girlfriend from Issan Thailand (the hottest food area of Thailand) I have adapted to more heat than most Farangs eating authentic home made Thai. This Farang style Thai would be more at place ten years ago. As is the dining room which is too formal and vacuous. Overall it is overpriced for average fare in a slightly pretensions dated room with slightly rude staff. Won't be back. read more
