Green curry with beef (#16) ($14.90 AUD)

We were looking for something cheap and tasty to eat in Manly. After checking out a few spots, we settled on Manly Thai Gourmet. It's a hole in wall, hidden in a small alleyway that also houses an Italian restaurant, Manly Pizza & Wine. We dropped in on a Thursday evening (around 7:30pm) and the place was busy. There's lots of seating (with even a private room area). This place is BYOB ($2.50/person for corkage fee). The menu is simple; chef's specials, entrees, soups, curries, stir fries and rice noodle salads. There's also a few daily specials and desserts. - 2x Steamed jasmine rice (#31) ($3.00 AUD/person) - Miang kom (#9) ($3.00 AUD) - prawn, roasted coconut, lime, ginger and peanuts. A nice refreshing bite but small. - Curry puff chicken (#11) ($2.00 AUD) - potato and vegetable filling with a side of sweet chili sauce. It came out crispy and hot. It's a small, one biter. - Green curry with beef (#16) ($14.90 AUD) - spicy curry with coconut milk, beans, broccoli and sweet Thai basil. We asked for our dishes to be medium spicy; our waiter was really skeptical to give us this. I'm not sure why. Maybe because the rest of the clientele was Caucasian? Anyways, he obliged in the end. Sadly, while the curry had a good spice level, the sauce was watery and underwhelming in flavour. The beef also didn't taste fresh and was a bit over cooked. We've had better. - Pad ki mao "drunken" noodles (#26) ($13.90 AUD) - thick flat noodles with chicken, chili, basil and light oyster & soya sauce. This had a great wok hei and our favourite dish of the night. Really well executed. Decent Thai but there's so many to choose from in the city. I'd have to come back to try more dishes but it's a 3.5 star for now.

Good food ! Not very clean place, but busy for Thai food at the beach. I wish their kitchen was cleaner, nice service over all. I liked the food , had myself some noodles today.

With much consideration I give this review with fear of a reprimand from locals including my friends because this surely has to be one of the Northern Beaches best kept secrets. Well hidden down the Arcade between The Brighton Hotel (with the longest refurbishment known in history) and The Steyne Hotel (Manly institution) sits Manly Thai Gourmet. The food here can not be described as ordinary in anyway including taste, execution and design. Having only been here twice with friends and after a week of illness in my little family I am in the mood for chicken and without thinking I consider Pad Thai. My friend recommends one of the Chef's Special being the banana flower salad. Reading the ingredients from the menu it defines the meal as edible banana flower chopped finely and seasoned with an exotic blend of spices topped with tender chicken and drizzled with coconut cream. When it comes to the table Im entralled at this creation that has arrived before me. Long purple elegant leaves curl towards the sky with the the chicken, noodle and coconut cream sitting in the middle like its the bouquet of a flower. It looks so beautiful I carefully spoon out the meal with my fork and the flavour is... well its indescribable. I try to capture it in a photo however it can do it no justice. The only other dish I have ordered is boiled rice and I am glad as anything other combination of food would mellow in comparision to this dish. I love that Manly Thai Gourmet in the evening is pure simplicity when it comes to table dressing which brings a touch of simple elegance to this local favourite. No dressing up is required for such a place as this as the food and value speaks for itself - in volumes.

Decided to try out their thai milk tea and pad thai. The milk tea had quite a lot of condensed milk in it and less ice which made it thick and over sweet. Maybe the different type of condense milk has also an impact towards the beverage. Would prefer less condensed milk. For chicken pad thai, I asked the server to not include the dried shrimps. Order came around 10 minutes later. The taste is great and the noodles are cooked in perfection. Some of the chicken was still cold.. The price for Pad Thai was great :) I noticed quite a few table ordered the coconut ice cream for desserts and crushed ice flavored drinks to accompany their meals. Looked like they enjoyed what they have ordered. Besides that, to accommodate to new customers, the servers cleaned the tables quickly so that a new customer can use upon walking in. Located at the ferry terminal is definitely a bonus for this store.

I would give it between a 3 and a 4. The menu is huge and has a lot of interesting items. They range from the easily recognizable (Pad Thai) to some really different dishes, although they're all distinctly Thai in nature. I ordered the Peking duck stir fry which was served with shallots and bok choy over noodles. We also got an order of yellow curry with chicken and vegetables and an order of vegetable pad Thai. The food came out extremely fast, which was born awesome and slightly disturbing. The portions were large. I really enjoyed the duck. It was very flavorful and multi dimensional; the bok choy was crunchy and added to the dish. The yellow curry was spot on, and the pad Thai was pretty standard. While nothing really blew me away, the food was good in general. Everything was solid, and everything that came out of the kitchen smelled delicious. Perfect for a fast, hearty dinner.

After a long walk/trek from Spite, we were searching for a place to eat in Manly. Back to back days…read morein Manly and we still had the same problem of finding a reasonably priced restaurant to eat at. We settled on Mortar & Pestle, which pans themselves as traditional Thai food, after walking around the area. It was busy on a Friday evening (around 7:30pm) but we were able to get a table inside without waiting. Service was brutal even though they are well staffed. We had troubles with ordering, getting wrong dishes, etc. We weren't impressed. The dinner menu is massive with appetizers, soup, salad, grill, noodle/fried rice, from the wok, curry, whole fish, seafood, vegetable and desserts. The lunch menu was much more succulent with only two pages of options. - 2x jasmine rice ($3.00 AUD) - you're going to want to get at least two bowls to sop all your curry sauce up. - Gang ga ree gai ($16.90 AUD) - beef, sweet potato, pumpkin and onion in a mild yellow coconut curry sauce. This yellow curry was really well executed. So much better than the curry I had at another Thai place in Manly the day before. - Roasted duck fried rice ($17.90 AUD) - curry & turmeric powder, grilled pineapple, onion, garlic, shallot, egg and Chinese broccoli. Another well executed dish. Everyone loved this one. Generous portion of roasted duck and good wok hei on the rice. Only complaint is that there was barely any pineapple and I thought it was a tad heavy on the salt. - Hokkien noodle ($15.90 AUD) - stir fried egg Hokkien noodles with chicken, vegetables and oyster sauce. Good variety of vegetables but the sauce was a bit too sweet. Pretty average. - Soft shell crab with yellow curry ($20.90 AUD) - came with egg, celery and red chili peppers. This came out late as they messed up our original order. Luckily, the crab was delicious; lightly breaded and deep fried. The sauce had a good kick to it. Wasn't a fan of the celery as the only vegetable accompaniment. If you can get past the terrible service, the food is tasty and reasonably priced for the area.
