I thought the food contained too much fish sauce for my taste, but my Vietnamese plus one thought it was very authentic and delicious! Follow the lines in AUS. I saw a line for Chat Thai so I came and it was one of the better thai food I've had...but it's probably a bit too pricey for how much you are given. I had the amy's noodles which I love the noodles as they were really tasty and had a lot of "wok he." The prawns werent that great(they're not that terrible)...I did love the veggies cause along with the noodles they were packed with flavors. I'll definitely consider coming back. read more

Nice buzzy ambience without the greasy floor of fast food asian places. I like the decor of the place. We may not have ordered the right dishes to give this place a true rating. We ordered minced chicken with green beans over steamed rice. Pretty good. I wished that there were a lot more green beans. A bit of spicy ness mixed in. I also ordered rice vermicelli with bamboo shoots, eggplant, chicken. The waiter told us that it was too spicy. But it came out smelling like rotten food (fish sauce overused?). I took one poof of the air above it, had one bite and felt like that I was going to throw up eating this and had to abandon it. This place opens late and the line is quite long even at 11pm. Stopped by this place for a spot of lunch. Was a great YELP find, I love this app. Anyway, the food, had the beef salad, spicy, authentic and delicious. Spicy cashew chicken also a hit. The Padt Si Ew, was just average, not bad, but average. Loved the authentic offering aluminum drinking glasses on the table when we arrived. The service good, sat down. They have beautiful flowers at the cashier station which is nice to look at while you are waiting to pay your tab. All plates were delicious but I will say the most memorable plate was the fish mango. The mango salad paired beautifully with it. Amy's hungry noodles were the right amount of spicy. Meh. Overrated. We found some blogs that raved about chat Thai and couldn't wait to come to try. Chat Thai was a bit further out from the other places that we tried, and we ended up taking a bus to get there. However, when we got there at 9pm, there was still a wait. So I was really excited, especially when there's such a demand from a restaurant outside of typical dining hours. However... our experience was far from good tho. Some background, I'm from LA and we are very lucky because where I'm from, Thai food is good, plentiful, and cheap. A good meal will probably set me back $30USD.. but here it set me back about $80AUD, approximately $60USD, which for what we had was overrated and overpriced. What we ordered What was good: the puff crab omelette, which was tasty and a bit different. It was a bit on the oilier side. meh: papaya salad, which had fresh ingredients and with a little spice, kinda kicked our butts. Interesting: the fresh steam roll. I'm not sure if I loved it or not. If it looks crowded, don't be deterred. They have a second floor. Three friends and I came in on a Thursday at around 2. It was crowded but thankfully, we didn't have to wait. To start, we all shared the spring rolls ($10), which consisted of smoked fish sausages, chicken and crab with caramelised tamarind relish. We only ordered it because everyone on Yelp kept raving about it, but I didn't really like it. The 'fish sausages' (whatever that is - I'm not sure I even want to know) tasted kind of spongey. On top of that (literally) was the sauce they drizzled on it, which was way too sweet. It almost tasted like it belonged on a dessert, and not an appetizer. So why the 4 stars? Well, you can't really judge a restaurant on one dish - least of all an appetizer. Its saving grace was the khau gai noodles, which was on their 'specials' menu. It's similar to pad see ew, so if you like flat (non-spicy) noodles, this dish is perfect for you. But if you're like me and you do like the spice, it does come with a side of sriracha-like sauce. You know that feeling where you're so full but the food is so good that you just want to keep eating it? This was one of those times. I'm pretty sure I finished off every last morsel of that noodle dish. Bottom line - go to Chat Thai, avoid the spring rolls but do get yourself some noodles! read more

Very popular Thai restaurant in Sydney, and I visited two locations, 20 Campbell St and Gateway Shopping Center. The first visit was at the Campbell St location, and as other reviewers have noted, it is very busy. You sign yourself in (which wasn't clear to everyone standing in line) and be prepared to wait. Being a solo diner, I was offered the bar, which I accepted since I was starving at that point. Facing a brick wall is not the greatest atmosphere, but the service was prompt and the food was good. Cashier was friendly as well. I would return to this location. The Gateway location was an attractive, convenient and much larger restaurant. Those are the compliments. I echo the reviewer who mentioned "late" is a confusing term to this restaurant. With no one in line and a half-empty, I was seated by a very haughty male host about 9 p.m. Immediately he asked if I wanted the bar. This time I declined since there were open tables clearly in view. He reluctantly seated me and disappeared. One of the reasons I enjoy Thai restaurants is for the graciousness of the Thai people. That quality does not exist at this location. The same host returns to take my order, and feels the need to add a further dig with "The kitchen will be closing soon". OK, whatever. He serves the food with zero personality or friendliness, and disappears. When I asked another server for some water, she looks at me like I asked for a deep-fried infant. She couldn't be bothered, and yells for the host without informing him of my simple request. So I repeat the request for water. What Thai restaurant doesn't automatically serve water anyway? I can see why there was a 30 minute queue, at least, on a Saturday night and this was early. Line up, put your name down and take a number. No bookings. Best to come with no more than 4 people. Menu is substantial. Classic Thai dishes or go rogue. Whatever you get is sure to please. As busy as they were, our food came within 5 minutes of ordering. Before our drinks! Yummy flavours, like the spicy green papaya salad, creamy red curry with duck and Pad Thai, for my less adventurous friend. Can't complain! It was crowded and noisy so don't go on a first date. My friend who has been living in Sydney for a year or two decided to take my friend and I to this place since her other friend recommended this place. When we got here, the place was PACKED. We put our name on the waiting list, and we waited for about 30 min. We ordered a variety of dishes and shared them. I forgot the names of the dishes in particular, but we got a papaya salad, some red curry, some soft-shelled crab dish, and pad thai. The papaya salad and curry were rightfully spicy, and since I can't handle spicy food all that well, I didn't eat too much of it. Everything we ordered came out delicious. The papaya salad was so fresh crunchy and spicy. The pad Thai was yummy topped with plenty of bean sprouts. You can really taste the quality of the ingredients. As I'm writing this, I'm craving the food again. We were absolutely full but had to order the donuts. I can see them carrying pitchforks, and chanting bloody murder... the look in their baleful eyes, as they train them on my soul, hold a promise that it won't be quick... that's the nature of elite foodie Yelpers, and they gon' be on me like Elvis on a cheeseburger. Soz peeps my experience here just wasn't that good and my expectations were set high. It was nowhere near what I get at Home or Prik Thai - where I am treated like royalty and the food is amazing. The Khanom Jeeb here were exceptional, granted, but they were entree. The service was also very good. The wait was short and our server was vivacious and colourful, which always helps. But... my main was a huge let down. I had the Crying Tiger, which tends to be either done very well by Thai restaurants, or done very poorly, and sadly I was very disappointed with it here. The beef wasn't tender at all and the sauce was not the traditional spicy flavour explosion that I have come to expect. If it's any consolation my co-worker said the Pad Thai was the best he'd ever had (and he's eaten with me at both the other places), but I don't rate Thai places on how well they do their most pedestrian dish. The complexity in the Crying Tiger wasn't there and the simple lack of tenderness killed it for me. Whilst I will be back to try Chat Thai again, my first experience was memorable for the wrong reasons :( read more

One of the BEST thai places in Sydney! I stumbled upon Chat Thai at around 2pm, scribbled my name onto the waiting list and ripped off my numbered ticket. I stood by the waiting list and read everyone's names to kill some time (which probably sent off some stalkerish vibes) and read through the thorough menu. After about 20mins or so, we were awarded for our patience by being seated and we were overly-prepared to order! I can't remember exactly what we ordered but I do recall that the food was very appe-THAI-zing ;D The staff were super friendly too! Apparently, they had served us a dish with the wrong condiments on the side, unbeknownst to me. We had chowed through half the dish accompanied by the incorrect sauce (which still tasted awesome) before a waiter came by, swiped up the dish, was very apologetic and replaced it with a fresh, new one with the right sauce. Honestly, I don't even know how they realised we had been given the wrong condiment since it had already been a few minutes and we didn't signal that anything was wrong with it, but kudos to them for being on the ball. In America, we're used to explicit business hours but the laid back Australian closing time of "late" got the best of us. After being turned away by several options, we headed over to Chat Thai, knowing that it really closes at 2am (kitchen closes at 1:30am). Even late at night, there was a small line. That's always a great sign! The food descriptions looked authentic and there were definitely ethnic Thai customers. We ordered 3 items: Khao Soi, a $5 mini soup egg noodle, and grilled Crying Tiger. I am obsessed with khao soi and it's my go-to whenever I see it on a menu. The khao soi here was not the best I've ever had. The topping that came in the separate little plate was way too salty. Maybe I wasn't supposed to dump the whole thing in. The noodles were still enjoyable despite the overly salty flavor. My friend liked both the grilled beef as well as the soup noodles. I don't pretend to be an expert on what authentic Thai food tastes like (or even good Thai) for that matter.. but Chat Thai just does good food. Full stop. I always enjoy all the dishes we order here. It's a huge menu and you worry that you're going to miss out on something by ordering the wrong plates. However, that seems impossible - it all works out in the end. I still need to work my way through more of the desserts, but the ones I've tried were really nice. The mango and sweet coconut sticky rice and most recently the 'iced bread' -- which is insane (and awesome). I love that they're open late. I haven't been this excited by a restaurant in a long while. Chat Thai's main game seems to be Thai-style sweets and deserts, but their Midnight Bites, $5 for things like spring rolls and noodle dishes, just became my post-pub destination. Judging by the lines that greeted us at 11PM, everyone else is thinking much the same thing. Crowds or no, we were still seated and served water and menus almost instantaneously. We jumped straight in with a serve of gai yaang, chicken grilled in turmeric and lemongrass ($10), and a spicy noodle curry called khao aoi ($12). The latter was the clear winner, being both fragrant and warming, perfect for a rainy night. My friend and I couldn't even go near the smoked chili oil - be sure to taste a little before spooning in. Unable to resist a bargain, I also ordered the ba mee mu daeng (usually $10.90). This felt much more like street food, with the dumplings, barbeque pork and noodles being served separately and with little garnish, but the food was fresh and the flavors simple and refreshing - especially after the full flavors of the other dishes. I also ordered a traditional thai coffee with caramelized milk. Nothing special there - the 'caramelized milk' seeming too similar to the condensed variety. Other diners seemed to be enjoying the chilled coffees though, so I'll have to give them a try next time. By the end we were too stuffed to even consider desserts, but no doubt I'll soon try a few. I've been thinking of an excuse to go back. If that's not the sign of a great place, I'm not sure what is. read more

There is this little speck of Thai food in Haymarket called Thai Town and if you don't see the tiny small sign you'll miss it. But I've seen the reviews of a certain spot and I've got to try Chat Thai. Okay at first glance I am pumped!!! I'm pretty sure that if the menus are falling apart, it means many hands have touched them! The place is fairly skinny but really tall with exposed beams and brick. Bright and colourful lights with electric artwork and my water was served in a silver cup. I don't want to come off speculating but I'm pretty sure that it was packed with Thai people (always a good sign) What a friendly host who placed me at my table. Per usual I don't know what to order, it's fine. It's my M.O. I order the Raad Na with a pork skewer on the side. The Raad Na reminds me of a Chinese dish with the fatty savoury gravy. The noodles, fat and slippery fight the bite size chicken to be devoured. I can't help to spoon the sauce like soup. Slurps good. And the pork, The sauce is one of the best I've ever had. Chat Thai is meant to be one of those 'institution' places that you just HAVE to go to at least once in your foodie lifetime. The two of us had a 15 minute wait in the cold and were eventually seated on a share table with a lady on her own. It wasn't the most awkward thing, but it was probably worse for her! The place is tiny, and they really manage to squeeze people into every nook and cranny. The seating is borderline uncomfortable, so it's not the kind of place you go to wine and dine and hang out for a couple of hours - you're in and you're out before you know it! The food also left a bit to be desired from. The cold spring rolls were great - something different and probably unique that we've never had. The Pad See Ew was also yum, but nothing super special. Unfortunately the Massaman was a big letdown. I think they tried to get a little too fancy with it - too much cardamom, too much sugar. Unfortunately it was almost inedible, and just lacked that delicious nutty savouriness that it needs. Was looking for some really good late night Thai and this place was everything I could have imagined. I'm used to the Pad Thai in the US and this was no comparison..unbelievable and now ruined any Thai food I have from here on out back in the US because nothing will ever compare. Ambiance was pretty cool and artsy too. Bravo guys, you've got the perfect mix. I saw someone else in these reviews talking about It being over priced but honestly I thought It was pretty reasonable. I don't know what gluttonous amount of alcohol or additional sauces they were getting that boosted their bill higher than what they expected but we didn't spend more than $20USD here with a delicious appetizer and Pad Thai which fed both of us plus a drink. I feel that's pretty reasonable especially since back home in the city we could pay upwards of $40 to feed two people with quality being half as good. I suppose if you want to try the whole menu in one night for the sake of being a tourist and not being able to have the opportunity again, then yes, it could get expensive. Became regulars here even on our short stay in Sydney. Everything we ate was delicious - the padt si-ew, the beef, the khao padt gai (chicken fried rice, picked based on other reviews), the padt kana mhu grob (pork belly, picked based on other reviews), and the par tuhng go (fried dough, picked after we saw how popular they were on our first visit). I had a shrimp Cake that was like a little crispy shrimp cloud with a sweet little dipping sauce that was just delicious. One of my fave thai places in the Chinatown district. Always packed unless you come early or late, this place is famous for its desserts. Sometimes I come here just for dessert after having dinner elsewhere. Its that good. But that's not saying the food is terrible. Its actually delicious as well. Try the signature som dtum (warning its super spicy), the satay sticks (both pork or chicken), the pork belly with ginger or the curries. Safe options include the chicken with cashew nuts, pad thai or pad si-ew. Then come the desserts. I love most of them, especially if it includes sticky or glutinous rice (the best!), coconut milk, sweet potato or sago. I've had one weird dessert though, I forget what its called but it was icy and had sweet bread in it. Don't order this one if you see this in the description. Also another thing, they give you the menu, but a lot of the desserts aren't available and the sticky rice desserts sell out really quickly, so its a bit hit and miss sometimes. Well, that seems to be the case at least as far as fellow chain Thai diners go. This edition in Thainatown is totally packed from 12 o'clock onwards, so be prepared to wait for a table if you can't get there earlier. The larb gai, laced with sliced red onion and plenty of mint is especially spicy compared to other places I've tried it here - probably, true to original recipes. On one dinner visit, a friend and I opted for something a little different - the gaeng som cha-om goong was definitely that, a very light and not creamy curry made with an orange-tamarind soup base, filled with poached prawns and squares of omelette that soaked up the sour juices. If you come for a late lunch, be sure to keep an eye out for the pre-made fresh mango and sticky coconut rice desserts stacked up on the kitchen counter by the till - perfectly positioned to tempt sweet toothes on their way out the door. read more
