If you're a seafood fan, then you need to get to know Garfish…read more Much like its Manly and Kirribilli siblings, the Crows Nest restaurant works on blackboard specials that list the chef's picks of the day alongside a series of cooking and sides options. The deal is you design your own meal, but if that sounds a little too daunting, they do cite recommendations (eg. the Swordfish is best spiced and served with the cous cous salad). In a clever nod to newspaper wrapped fish and chips, there's even a brown paper menu listing the rest of the a la carte delights. And yes, there are even some red meat and vegetarian dishes. The service here is consistently warm and friendly, with much appreciated help given to moving tables and chairs around to accommodate for both a toddler and a babe-in-arms. We also came bearing a birthday cake, which was brought out with some (suitably embarrassing) ceremony before being served with a dollop of delicious vanilla bean icecream. The fact that the restaurant is also BYO is a just bonus, making it an even easier decision to return for future birthdays and fun times.

In other words, you're given a list of the day's offering of fish, along with different preparation methods and sides. You can't really choose a bad combination as all the fish and sides work perfectly together. Since there were several types of fish I had never heard of before, I referred to the TV screen which describes each fish's origin, taste, and texture. There's also a menu that's filled with other seafood plates (I'll be getting the Snapper Pie next time!). I ordered the roasted Hapuka, a flakey white fish from New Zealand, served with a salad of fennel, parsley, and kaffir lime leaves. There was a bright sauce made with lime juice, olive oil, and chilies. The entire dish was absolutely fantastic. The fish was roasted to perfection, with a crispy skin and light showering of fleur de sel. The salad was the epitome of fresh and summery. For dessert, I had the Belgian waffles with clotted cream and strawberries. Well, I definitely had a complaint about the dessert. It was WAY too small! Just kidding--but it was one of the best waffles I've had. Service at Garfish was stupendous. Our waitress couldn't have been more friendly or accommodating. She helped everyone choose his or her fish combination individually. When one of my friends spilled her drink, the mess was cleaned posthaste and she was immediately offered a refill. Everyone at the table was very satisfied with our experience at Garfish.

The yum cha is tasty but can get a little pricey. Overall some pretty good dishes. When I went for dinner, we ordered the peking duck, which I thought was pretty tasty but my cousin said it wasn't presented properly - with one slice of cucumber and no green onion, and too much hoison sauce. The lettuce wraps were a bit salty and didn't have the traditional water chestnuts. The seafood chow mein was good, the veggies were a bit bland. Overall it was a decent dinner, but nothing spectacular. One exciting thing was that the bathroom had toilet seat covers!! It's probably more exciting for me as an American living in Sydney and missing toilet seat covers.

The food was always good, especially the weekend Yum Cha. It just seems to be a lot more efficient. I've never been to YumCha (Dim Sum) and had one of the cart pushing "aunties" ask from across the restaurant whether I wanted more. Usually they glide on past and leave you hungry. Imperial Signature is really worth the effort if you're into Yum Cha. It's best after 11am when the carts are full and the kitchen is heaving.

Hmm something fishy indeed. I was recommended this fish and chips shop by a foodie friend. I…read morethought that meant I was in for a treat - some quality fish, some perfectly cooked chips - not too soggy, not too crispy. I bought a piece of battered snapper and a handful of chips. It was certainly edible. The fish was nicely cooked, albeit a bit slimy. The chips however were brown, like triple dipped, hanging about the cooker too long overdone. There weren't even many crunch ones or soggy ones, just brown ones. I'm also not sure if it was the overdone chips or the fish but there was an ever so slight whiff of something not quite right. I feel OK today which is a good sign all was OK but I have to say the chips let me down and I don't think I'll be going back. My sister, who picked them up, said she almost didn't go into the shop because of the way it looked. Personally I'm not so fussed about the decor but if a fish and chip shop slips on one of their two biggest sellers I wouldn't even try to justify it to my butt why it's a good idea.

The past few times I've ordered the grill pack which at $25 easily feed 2 people, with grilled calamari, scallops, prawns, octopus and fish. The also sell gluten free coated fish, prawns and calamari. The chips are hand cut in the store and are yummy. They also sell fresh sea food, but I've only tried their cooked stuff. BUT try the tartare! Rich, but homemade by owner and at 40c, an absolute steal.

Once inside, you'll see the counter isn't filled with your usual deep fried hunks of indistinguishable fish, instead there's an array of colourful salads made up of prawns and other seafood. These are available to be fried up whilst you order, though it's advisable to order ahead, as we did, so that it was packaged and ready for us when we arrived 15 minutes later. The prices are mercifully decent and service very cheery, especially considering it was the Friday night boom. Our whiting was a cracking blend of crispiness on the outside and tender flesh on the inside, while the chips were chunky and crunchy, the best mixture for any easy as pie Friday night chippie!

The first thing you notice when you walk in is the south side wall art - black and white illustration circle pattern with a retro design feel. It's pretty 'cool' for these parts. The dark timber table and chairs and polished (both in presentation and literally) table setting gives this restaurant an instant luxury dining feel whereas the outside seating area on the main road and side street give it more a chilled cafe feel. The menu is certainly on the fancy end of food standards. Here's my picks to give you an indication of quality: fresh oysters with a Campari and lime dressing for starters (one dozen for $36), Roast baby beetroot with Mt Vikos feta, purslane and truffle honey for entree ($17), Duck confit with frisee salad, lardons and mustard dressing for main ($28), Rocket salad with organic almonds, black pepper and lemon for sides ($8) and an "Orgy" of summer berries, crisp meringue and raspberry sorbet ($14). Oh yeah... it's a nice menu indeed. There's a comprehensive wine and beer list but you can take your own bottle of wine for $10 corkage. Coffee is so so. Breakfasts are also meant to be pretty dam fine. Staff were pleasant and efficient enough but I didn't find them overly warm. Also I'd sit looking inwards towards the restaurant as the streets outside are pretty drab.

The two that served today seemed self absorbed and arrogant. The Spring special did not have a vegetarian option and they weren't willing to substitute anything either. I am not a vego but my husband is and I always look at the options. (Only one entree was vego and no mains) I decided against the special and ordered off the a la carte menu. The spaghetti was almost $30 (special was two courses incl wine) so that seemed a lot. Two in our party ordered it and it was swimming in OIL and tasteless.... They whisked away the plates and did not ask if anyone enjoyed their meals, so it seems they don't care what you think. With average meal prices that high, I would love genuine service and generous serves of delicious food - none of that at High Street Bistro! Save the effort and go to Crows Nest :) P.S I also bought a Cudo voucher a few months ago but after multiple tries I was unable to use it before they expired. Only could be used at very specific times I guess but they weren't willing to say when that was.
