Relaxing vibe and excellent service. The gentleman helping me today was very friendly and wished me a really nice day and flight. I really enjoyed the modern white decor, especially the extra large coffee mugs around. Nice view of planes. It's located right in the middle of McNamara terminal--You can't miss it after you leave security and make your way to the gates. I enjoyed my flavorful and moist blueberry muffin. I also grabbed a bottle of water and a Vitamin water. I appreciated their grab and go section. I wasn't in the mood for a coffee so I appreciated their other offerings. They have some seating, spread out so you feel like you have privacy. Lots of natural light coming in from all the large windows. Nearby was a musician, singing and playing guitar. Had an extraordinarily rude person taking the orders today. It was completely inappropriate. But I'm giving two stars because the gentleman making the drinks was very nice. But I couldn't believe how obnoxiously rude she was. She even talked about me trying to cut line with the other customers while I was in line waiting to order. That's so unprofessional. I've had Illy coffee before and it is less than impressive. I got a vanilla latte with almond milk and it was very light. Also, very expensive! It's Starbucks prices but you get a smaller amount for a small size. The workers could've been a bit more happy, but I understand that they've been on their feet all day and that they get so many customers a day. Eh. Never returning. I've had my eye on this spot a zillion times as I've passed through DTW running to catch my next flight. I've always thought how nice it would be to sit, pretend to be Italian, work and watch the hustling travelers whirl by... My time finally came to make this experience a reality this past weekend thanks to a three hour layover. I ordered a double shot of espresso (in the adorable little ceramic cup with saucer) and found a comfortable seat that pointed out towards the travelers and the beautiful fountain installation. This Illy is fairly no frills but the staff was friendly and the location in the center of DTW was hard to beat. Imagine the sounds of the fountain splashing, the natural light flooding in and the smell of espresso in the air . It's a quite lovely spot to pass a few hours between flights. I was here for a connection flight, long line, after paying $6,00 for a cappuccino (asked about 3 shots, they put only 2) the barista gave me a 16oz cup full of foam! I asked for a better drink, she insisted to say that's how they make cappuccinos?!!! What? I know exactly what Illy cappuccino should be! I then requested to be refunded, but the cashier couldn't figure it out to give my money back. Asked me to go back in line! The manager (Shanay) who was making the drinks didn't care about correcting my drink, just did another full cup of foam. Customers in line also were shocked to watch what happened! Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of the shops in the McNamara terminal and airport (in general) were closed. Options were limited. This coffee shop was one that I had not heard of before, and I really had no coffee substitutes to choose from. However, in a way, I am glad that I came here and tried their iced coffee. When I go to a coffee shop, I usually order some sort of iced coffee. I do not like it to be on the overly sweet side where I am essentially drinking a cup of liquid sugar. I like the coffee to be strong and rich, and I like it to have a couple splashes of the sweet flavor. That was exactly what I received! The flavor I had with my iced coffee was caramel. This is the best cafe I have ever seen. I was on a work trip with a long flight delay and spent the day viewing the fountain with an espresso and blueberrg muffin. A nice place to kick back with an espresso inside DTW. It's located inside the Delta terminal by the fountain and has an overall relaxing atmosphere. I enjoyed a Red Eye and although pricier than non-airport pricing at a whopping $5, the coffee and espresso were tasty. The environment is nice too and the entire place gives off a European feel. I like Illy. I have enjoyed them during my European jaunts for ages, and I'm always happy to stop by when transiting the Detroit Airport. It's far better than its other coffee chain rivals, but the quality in the US isn't what it is in Europe. Is that an unfair standard? Perhaps. But this is my Yelp page, isn't it? So 4 stars it is. This location also sells pastries and, curiously enough, hard boiled eggs. Look, I don't mean to be crass, but if you are the person that made the decision to sell hard boiled eggs to people who are about to board a closed metal tube with recycled air with another hundred or more people, I just can't say I support that decision. The Illy Espressamente was the only "eatery" I tried when visiting the DTW airport. It was towards the middle of the A concourse. My layover to Amsterdam wasn't long so I didn't have time to grab a actual meal. I also try to limit myself from eating and drinking too much when flying, I hate those stupid airplane bathrooms. I very much enjoy Illy coffee, so the place caught my eye. They also had a nice little lounge area right out front where you can enjoy your coffee with comfortable seating. I ordered a medium espresso, which came out to a whopping $3.50. I expect heavy prices when being inside a sterile area of the airport behind security, they got you. I also ordered a cup of watermelon to help my sugar level a little bit, the cup set me back $3.99. While super pricey, the watermelon was excellent and fresh. My little medium espresso also hit the spot and gave me that little energy boost I needed to make it through my next grueling 7hour flight to Europe. If you like Espresso, I'd definitely walk over to Illy when visiting DTW concourse A. read more

Delta Airlines pours horrible Starbucks coffee on their airplanes that I simply can't drink. Luckily, in Detroit Airport, there is a cafeteria that provides better than average coffee and pastries. I wouldn't say that it is superior, but it is very good considering their location. In many bigger airports like Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta or Denver International, it would be a problem to enjoy a decent coffee in the morning. And here I don't need to have sugar in my latte. Stopped in for a quick morning treat to ease the flight...the bartender Borko was super nice and helpful...one of the better ones I've experienced lately. Very personable. This place is right in the center of McNamara terminal. I was able to try any of the food, but it appeared to be muffins and breakfast sandwiches. As for lunch, seemed to have more of a selection. Like a basic caterpillar going from a chrysalis to a beautiful butterfly, the old Starbucks at the centerpoint of the McNamara Terminal at DTW has turned into an elegant, mature, and rightfully-global Illy coffee bar. Gee, I hope this place sticks around for a while. You really can't miss it, as it's located adjacent to the synchronized water fountain, after you pass underneath the terminal tram. The Illy Expo emits plenty of style and flair, and is every bit as European and fabulous as an Italian coffee bar should be. Surprisingly enough, the staff I encountered all seemed very well-trained and passionate about the coffee offerings on the menu, and were courteous and efficient. Those are qualities you don't encounter everyday at an airport, right? What impressed me even more about Illy Expo was that they offer a type of espresso drink that is simply difficult to come by in the US - a Cappuccino Greco (aka a Frappe), and it's done right with the sweetened espresso, low-fat milk, right balance of ice, all shaken and frothy and delicious. They also offer a small selection of pastries, panini, cookies, and non-coffee drinks. While you won't find a full breakfast here, if it's caffeination and some Euro flair you're seeking, Illy will float your boat. It's also worth echoing the other reviews about the quality of the Illy product. Their beans and their roasting are magical and much more potent and flavorful, never bitter, especially compared to other airport coffee and espresso drink options. I found the prices to be less than I would have expected for an airport-based Illy bar; I felt as though I paid less than I would have at Starbucks, and received a superior product and more positive experience. read more
