On our first night in Venice we set out to wander around, get lost, and stumble onto a restaurant. Il Refolo did not disappoint--hidden in a small square in the center of Venice, the ambience is hyper picturesque--tables outside, friendly waiters, and a diverse menu. We went on the lighter side, due to jet lag, but were amazed by the quality of the bufala with tomato and the mixed seafood starters. Great wine, too! A place worth seeking out!

    Gnocchi with smoked salmon

Was one of those happy accidents we stumbled upon on the way back to the train station. We just had the gnocchi with smoked salmon, a Bellini, and a spritz, but the gnocchi was AMAZING! The sauce with the salmon was light but flavorful and was a delicious surprise. Not to mention it's right along a back canal which was delightful.

Great service and food in a non touristy setting. Note I haven't found a place where there aren't other English speakers in Venice so it's all touristy in my opinion but the food was great. I've read the pizza is well known and the pizza menu was extensive, we got the carbonara pizza but anything we saw other diners eating looked heavenly also. Pasta: we got the penne and it was delicious and perfectly al dente Order the ribola white wine

Fantasic pizza that was recommended to us by relatives who had been to Venice. The pizza is absolutely delicious and one of the best pies I had on my trip to Italy, and the server was awesome. The best part, though, might be the pseudo-secret square that becomes your personal hideaway from the madness of people traipsing back from San Marco to Piazza Roma and the train station. Sit and watch the boats roll by as you while away the afternoon with a carafe of white wine or a spritz.

    Tuna tartare appetizer

4 stars for an inexpensive, delicious dinner and a great spot to escape the crowds. When I was there, I was the only tourist in a dining room full of locals -- always a great sign! This restaurant was not far from my hotel on the grand canal, so I thought I'd check it out on my first night in Venice. Despite using my phone for directions, I almost walked right past the unassuming entrance. A staff member welcomed me inside and around the back to the small dining room. On a chilly evening (like the night I was there), this restaurant's 10 tables will fill up FAST. Warmer temps that allow for comfortable dining al fresco will more than double the number of tables available. I was seated promptly without a reservation. Now, for the meal - The tuna tartare appetizer was delicious. The fish was fresh and bright in color and full of flavor. The carbonara pizza was very good, but not necessarily what I was expecting. From other photos, I thought the egg might be cooked and placed in the center of the pizza. This was more like... scrambled and drizzled over the top. The pizza was still delicious and the dough was obviously fresh. It didn't blow my mind (I'm not sure if my expectations of pizza in Italy were too high) but it was very good and I'd visit this spot again. The staff was very attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable.

Very tasty dishes and a nice (and reasonably priced) wine selection. Wait until the sun is below the buildings to eat here since it is not shaded. Very popular, so you may need a reservation (we told them we would be finished in less than 90 minutes, so they squeezed us in). 10% service charge included. Our dinner bill for two with wine came to €70.

Extremely good pizza and a delicious caprese salad (balsamic and olive oil were served on the side), we also got two glasses of the house white wine and a tiramisu to share for dessert, all for 40 euros (there's no table fee here, but 10% tip is included). We were happy to find such a good restaurant with such reasonable prices.

Pizza w/Pepperoni & Spicy Red Peppers and Spinach Salad w/ Pecorino, Mushrooms & Bacon

This place definitely deserves more reviews!! We researched a little to find a reasonably priced authentic restaurant and found it!! We had a pizza w/ pepperoni & red spicy peppers and the spinach salad w/ mushrooms, bacon & pecorino. Both were great. The pizza had amazing crust, perfect balance of sauce/cheese, good pepperoni & the spicy peppers gave it little kick. The spinach salad was lightly tossed in a vinaigrette dressing & they did not skimp on the bacon! The mushrooms were alright. This was enough food for my boyfriend and I but we did get some gelato afterwards someplace else. Service was great, our server spoke Italian but I heard others speaking English (I'm sure they would be able to communicate if you had any questions about the menu). It's away from the touristy areas, as others have mentioned. Very charming to sit outside as it's very quiet, perfect for an intimate date.

    Spritz!

What a quiet little section of the square. We had monkfish and fantastic ravioli. We would recommend it highly.

A combination of a thunderstorm and an early dinner meant the place was empty, but Marco and other staff welcomed us warmly all the same. We had the antipasti Parmigiana Di Melanzane (fried eggplant with cheese) and enjoyed the mains Pasta Al Forno (baked pasta with beef and peas), Pasta Con Le Polpette E Salsa Di Pomodoro (spaghetti with meatballs - not pictured), and Turbante Di Pesce Spada "A Beccafico" (baked swordfish). These were also with the Casa Rosso wine and Birra Siciliana beer both blonde and red. All food was superb. The fried eggplant was flavorful and fresh, and the bread was crispy and savory. The baked pasta was rich, the spaghetti and meatballs were nostalgic, and the swordfish was delectable. Safe to say we all cleared our plates easily. We wish nothing but the very best for Marco and his restaurant. This food was some of the best we had on our two week stay throughout Italy. The atmosphere, staff, and of course the amazing food made for a great experience that we would recommend to anyone looking for a reasonably priced homestyle Sicilian meal.

From the moment we arrived, the owner, Marco, made us feel genuinely welcome. He explained that the food is Sicilian and quite different from what you typically find in Venice, which was exactly what we were hoping for after days of similar menus. The menu is short, focused, and built around family recipes. We ordered the pasta of the day, the roast beef, and the smoked salmon dish, and every single item was fantastic. To finish, we had limoncello made by Marco's mother, and it was absolutely delicious. What really made the evening special was Marco and his family. They were warm, kind, and genuinely happy to share their story with us. We loved hearing about his late father and the lasting impact he had on both the family and the restaurant. One of the most memorable parts of the night was joining in the restaurant tradition of coloring pictures and exchanging them with drawings already hanging on the ceiling. We ended up taking home a picture created by a family member, and it will be making the journey back with us to Carlsbad, California. Without a doubt, this was the best dining experience of our entire trip through Europe. Highly recommended!!

For dinner in peak season, try to make a reservation as the restaurant is very small. We arrived before our reservation time and were seated immediately inside and greeted warmly by the restaurant owner. We ordered a bottle of wine to start (most under 20 Euros for a 75 ML bottle). For appetizers we ordered the cheese with honey for 13 Euros, absolutely amazing! We also combined this with the local olive oil and fresh bread brought to the table to start as well. For our second course we chose two pastas, the Penne Alla Amatriciana (I think it was around 12 Euros), and the Spaghetti Alla Carbonara (I think it was around 12 Euros as well). Both had extremely fresh homemade ingredients and were out of this world and extreme attention to care in the preparation. For our entree we split the breaded pork chop (I think it was around 20 Euros), including a side of potatoes (similar to the steak fries that you would see in the U.S.) The service was absolutely amazing and we loved dining alongside the owner and his family and meeting the cat that also lives at the restaurant and comes by to greet you during the meal as well. It truly was like you were dining at the home of the owner and is a must try if you are in Venice!
