As we…read moreapproached we could see lively bustle and banter from within, amidst the soft light was a busy restaurant teeming with conversations and smiles. As we entered to the restaurant, we were shown to our seats by the most friendly of staff, who took our coats, before we settled.. I think we were extremely lucky to get seated in all honesty as most of the tables were pre-booked. So, we sat down to enjoy our meal, the service was excellent, i have never had my needs anticipated in so many ways. The staff new the menu and could recommend the food. And there was a synergy between the servers, yes we had more than one it seemed, a warmness and a genuine interest in your happiness. Everyone one of the servers smiled! The Penne Arrabbiata was extremely tasty but a bit on he mild side in terms of tasting the chilli's, though still very good you could taste the use of fresh ingredients. The Crème brûlée was amazing, I haven't seen it done right in many a restaurant I have been too, but this one done to perfection. The coffee, was fabulous, though at this point in the night it was kind of expected. The only downside I could possibly think of , that to be honest doesn't denigrate the experience in anyway, was the bathroom, though it was clean and well tended. A most wonderful experience, if I am ever back in Stratford upon Avon I certainly will book to ensure I get to taste the delightful ambiance of Sorrento's again.

We both went for the same starters. Butterflied King Prawns in garlic. These were simply the best succulent King Prawns I have eaten in such a long time. Seriously. My Pa went for Cannelloni with ricotta and spinach and thought it wonderful. I went for the Lobster and seafood linguine special. It came with King Prawns but of the variety I'd expect which tend to be disappointing. The Lobster wasn't that extraordinary either. The atmosphere is okay but I'm sure in the evening and at weekends the place feels more lively. We asked for some pieces of bread to soak up the juices of the starters and found we got charged £2 something which I thought was somewhat steep for a couple of pieces of bread but they removed the charge without complaint so good on them for that. House wine is fine.

The ingredients were fresh and the cocktails tasted great. My colleague tried both the blueberry and passion fruit mojito. They were very colorful and she said they were tasty. I had a classic and a cherry mojito. Both were worth returning for! After a jovial time in the bar, we were taken to the seated area for our meal. The service, attention to detail, politeness and respect of the team were first class ! They really went above and beyond to ensure everyone received excellent service and that our meals were perfect. We ordered dishes to share and they were outstanding. Excellence didn't end there. I always try to get fish and chips at least once during my week trips and where better than a seafood place. It was probably the best fish and chips I've had in the UK. The fish was perfectly battered and fried. Not greasy at all! The peas were perfectly cooked and the fries were not soggy ! Looking forward to returning to barnacles ! PS. Also loved the decor. I can never get enough nautical theme. I felt right at home!!

This is a special occasion type place and also perfect for a romantic night out. When you walk in you're greeted by a cosy area by the fire. You can sit on one of three large leather sofas or stand by the bar. You're quickly offered drinks & left to review the menu with complimentary olives & croutons. When your meal is ready your waiter takes your drinks on a silver platter & guides you to your table. Usually the cost is fairly high, however, they have some amazing deals on at the moment (Mar 10). Two courses for around £20 & three for £25 if my memory serves me. This is amazingly good value for the quality of the meals & the experience you'll have.

I love the nooks and crannies of the old wattle & daub building. The focus is fish and seafood which is fresh and thus, a significant portion of the menu changes daily. Most of the fresh fish is caught off Cornwall, although fish such as salmon is likely to come from Scotland. Vegetarians are not after-thoughts though....Roast Pumpkin and Chestnut Mushroom Tagliatelle with Sage and Parmesan does it for me! My son's favourite starter is the Twice Baked Oxford Blue Cheese Soufflé. In winter, a roaring fire sets the cosy tone as guests sink into huge, comfy leather sofas. Menus and drinks are served promptly....we usually opt for glass of sublime champagne while trying to make our minds up. A conservatory wraps round the back of the restaurant is kept cosy during winter, offers equal summer enjoyment. Great wine list, impressive casks of ales for beer connoisseurs, single malts, friendly, well-trained staff make this restaurant a cut above many others around here.

The Lobster Pot - Mussels steamed with basil and chilli, delicious, as a main course or starter

Take a wander up Mansfield Road, or probably better still, hop on a bus or jump in a cab, as The Lobster Pot is quite a way up. It is worth going out of your way for though. This small restaurant in my opinion is the best fish / seafood place in the city (not that there are many to choose from), and it is a shame that it isn't closer to the city centre. Still, if it were, then the prices would probably be higher to cover higher overheads on property. I am a big fan of mussels, and this place does them wonderfully. Their menu has a good choice of fish and shellfish dishes and a small selection of meat dishes in case anybody in your party isn't keen on seafood. As far as I know though, there aren't any vegetarian options...at least, there weren't the last time I checked their menu online. Some of the dishes have an oriental bent, such as the thai fishcakes, prawn spring rolls and sesame prawn toast starters, but there are plenty of 'regular' seafood dishes. My personal favourites at this place are the smoked haddock chowder as a starter, a hearty, creamy soup which is quite filling in itself, filled with chunks of smoked fish and potato as it is. I then like to have a main course of mussels, usually the ones steamed in chilli and basil, although the more traditional Moules Marinieres are also great. A side dish of french fries goes wonderfully with them. I also sometimes indulge in a couple of fresh oysters, which can be bought individually. Two of these with a splash of tabasco sauce are enough for me as I find them quite rich, I could never eat a full portion as a main course. Various forms of salmon are well represented on the menu, although I have never sampled them myself. There is usually a specials board on display, giving options that don't appear on the regular menu. The restaurant boasts some very reasonably priced wines, with a bottle of house wine costing just under ten pounds, and plenty of others around 11 and 12 pounds. As this is a small place, I would suggest calling to book, especially at weekends and in the Christmas period. Another point in this place's favour is that during the festive period, they keep their regular menu on, instead of forcing a "special" Christmas menu upon you as many restaurants seem to. With the price of different fish and seafood varying so much, it is hard to give an average cost for a meal here, however I do believe with this place that you get what you pay for, and i've never found myself feeling bad about the money i've put down. Seriously, if you are serious about seafood, forget about Loch Fyne. The Lobster Pot wins, claws down!
