First off a bit about my reviews, I generally cover the basics: service, cleanliness, taste, quality, setting and of course the beer! Also I only give 5 star ratings to the absolute best, so four stars is the upper limit for most places. To start with the service and wait staff were good and mellow, that's saying a lot given that the entire town was in a fever over a football game between Derby and Manchester. As football isn't my thing it was perfect timing for me. The restaurant is small being tucked back in an small court yard off the beaten path, loved it. It was clean, well staffed and being a bit slow everyone was on task and friendly. We got right to business at the bar as it was a long day at the office and Friday night, not that it mattered as the bar was the first place you run into as you walk through the door. Beer selection was good, not overwhelming but good. A mix of local brews and some common standbys. Try the Kings Abbey, a very nice English Belgium style ale, not a true Belgium but very good. Tried a few others, stop with the judging, it was a really long week and I was walking. All the beer was good, which was a bit of surprise frankly as in past trips I had bad luck with local English beer - some of it is just not good but a different story here. Now on to the food, my group sampled a good range of steaks and sea food. You really should do the stone cooked options, it's their thing and it's pretty cool or hot as the case may be. My tuna steak can out semi raw and I cut it up and cooked it to my liking which allowed me to try rare, medium and well versions - yep rare is best but hey I had to try it. The steaks were also good. The cuts were good quality and at least what was ordered 8oz+. Sides were reasonable, not amazing but good being roasted vegetables and a large mushroom. I've never like mushrooms but I tried none the less and it wasn't bad which is saying a lot. Overall service was good, food quality was good, everything was clean, food taste and presentation was good, the setting was a fun back alley venue and finally the beer was very nice. I recommend the Forge if you're looking for a steak or some sea food cooked at your table. read more
