Looking for authenticity? Go to Il Guscio. The unbelievably stunning Tuscan-style restaurant in Florence was one of the best Italian meals we've ever had. English speakers might have an uphill battle communicating, but once you power through the details, your appetites will be elated. The menu is broken down into appetizers, first courses, second courses and desserts. Arrive hungry. With every sticker known to man clogging up the front door, we knew our meal would be legendary. The restaurant has been around for over 30 years and received many accolades along the way. The cheese / tomato / olive oil combination in the Caprese appetizer was extraordinary. There is something magical about the simplicity, freshness and the enhanced tomato flavor in Italy. Perfect starter for two people. I had three breathtaking pasta dishes during our European vacation, and the Rabbit Penne here at Il Guscio was one of them. The texture in the scratch made, hand rolled pasta was like candy to me. Adding the rich and savory flavor of the rabbit only enhanced the dish into the pasta hall of fame. Best rabbit I've ever had! Although I wasn't hungry after the pasta, the server insisted for a carnivore eater to try their pan-fried, hand-pounded beef cutlet. Where has this been all my life? No American restaurant has any dish to compare to this. It's homemade comfort food. The accompanying spinach was again, the best I've ever had! The rotating daily menu, the contemporary yet homey ambiance, and the top notch service made for a near perfect experience. Il Guscio is absolutely one of Florence's finest ristorantes!

This was easily one of the best meals I had in Italy, and one of the best meals I had in Florence. I'm still kicking myself for eating a panini the day after eating here instead of eating lunch here for a second day in a row. If I lived in Florence, I'd be here once a week. Their lunch menu is really affordable, with most of the primi piatti pasta dishes at 6-8€, and the secondi piatti at around 10-12€. Many of the dishes have seafood, which is a great deal for these lunch prices. My friend who recommend this place to me says the prices go up for dinner, so come for lunch to get the best deal. I got the paccheri allo scoglio which was short tube pasta (think larger rigatoni without the ridges on the outside), with mussels and clams and this was one of the best seafood pastas I've ever had. At only 8€, this is a steal for the quality of the pasta and the shellfish. The zuppetta di seppie al pomodoro fresco e pistacchi was 9€, and I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this dish other than it had squid, tomato and pistachio, but it was delicious. The squid was sauteed and fresh, with a tomato sauce, over a piece of bread that was soaked in the same tomato sauce. I really loved this dish and would get it again, you don't find this kind of dish in most Italian restaurants. In short, some of the best food I had in Italy - definitely come once, if not more times for lunch. If I come back to Florence, I would probably have all my lunches here. If you like pasta and seafood, this place is a gem.

We love this place. We started with a Caprese, and the tomatoes were delicious, and generous mozzarella This place has the best Linguini. It is my wife's favorite meal plate between all of the restaurants we have visited in Venice and Florence. My rabbit and potatoes were very tasty too. The rabbit had great flavor, but a little too dry for my wife, but nice for me. The potatoes were nice and buttery. The serving sizes were very gracious too. The wait staff was also very friendly. A definite place to enjoy a nice meal with the locals. Off the beaten path.

Wow. Best gnocchi I've had in my entire life. Incredible bang for your buck. Amazing veal chop & pear risotto. A cute, homey atmosphere tucked in on the side of Oltrarno -- down the street from Hemingway chocolate bar. I took my family here when they were visiting me while I was studying in Florence -- everyone loved it. The rooms weren't overcrowded with tables, service was good, and the food was incredible. I will be returning with my boyfriend when he is in Florence.

We grabbed a bottle of wine on a warmer June afternoon after a day of exploring, which was definitely refreshing. The location isn't much as it overlooks a pretty bare piazza. The service can be a bit on the slower side, especially when I walked in and tried to get the bill. But still if you're able to get a table it's a pretty quaint wine bar. It seemed like they had some flights/tastings, which would have been an interesting option.

We were two couples and went for some wine and light snacks. When we arrived, there wasn't a table available for four, so we had to sit separately. Once a table behind our friends became available, we asked to move so we could sit closer together, but our server, Noemi, wasn't very accommodating and seemed somewhat annoyed by the request. We mentioned that we wanted to share a few dishes and asked about portion sizes, but Noemi didn't explain things clearly and wasn't very friendly. She insisted the plates weren't meant for sharing, which turned out not to be true. The wine itself was excellent, and the snacks were good -- but the overall service from Noemi felt unfriendly and not very customer-oriented. I'd still recommend the place if you're interested in trying great Italian wines, but be aware that the service experience may not match the quality of the wine.

The owner and staff were fantastic, very knowledgeable and provided great recommendations. The wine bar itself is a small quaint little place. Probably seats about 12 to 15 people total and has plenty of windows so you can see passersby and people watch. The cheeseboard? Get the cheeseboard. They do a fantastic job of pairing everything together to really bring so many flavors to your tastebuds. Their house wine is phenomenal and they take great pride in finding the grapes/different varietals to make it come to life. They have a both a red and a white house wine option. The second time we went - and yes, we went more than once in the four days we were there - we enjoyed one of the sandwiches and it was absolutely amazing. The bread, I can't even explain, the bread it's so flavorful and so good and so light. That paired with the delicious meats and cheeses were 100% worth it. I definitely recommend this location to anybody who is visiting Florence regularly or for their first time.

Instead, without even asking for my name or checking my reservation, a young host walked me out the door and across the street into a completely different dining area. The room I was placed in looked nothing like what was advertised: it was brightly lit, with paper napkins, cheap silverware, and visibly dirty walls. The whole place felt like a low-end lunch diner -- not a charming Florentine restaurant. They were blasting Highway to the Danger Zone and I Wanna Dance with Somebody while the main restaurant -- the one I thought I had booked -- played soft Italian music that actually fit the fine dining experience. The contrast was insulting. I was dressed in an upscale outfit appropriate for a refined dinner, yet I was treated as though I didn't belong. It felt discriminatory and dismissive. To make matters worse, at the end they tried to pressure me into tipping on the card machine -- in Italy, where tipping isn't even customary. The entire experience felt like a bait-and-switch, and I left feeling disrespected, singled out, and completely disappointed.

The vibe itself is cool (automatic door walking in, dungeon-like walls with cute decorations). Walking to your table you walk by a huge wine selection, which can be overwhelming. We started with the asparagus and peas salad. This was pretty solid, simple but it worked. We grabbed the spaghetti with the cream of asparagus-normally wouldn't order so much asparagus but this was the pasta that sounded the most interesting to us and we did ultimately end up enjoying the sauce quite a bit and it was one of the better pasta dishes we had in Italy. Got a side of the white beans which we probably didn't need but didn't mind. The steak: first of all it's very sizable. The Florentine way is rarer than I would ever order a steak and while I'm glad I tried it, I probably wouldn't choose it again. It's an interesting ordering process as you're essentially given the sizes they have left there for the night so you never know walking exactly how much you'll pay. I do appreciate that they cut it for you but I did feel like some of the meat was still on the bone (not that we really needed MORE meat I just didn't want to waste any). The flavoring is pretty good but there are definitely bites that are better than the others. The service was a bit mixed. There were times they were interested in talking with us while others they didn't seem so interested and a bit aloof. This was especially true when we went to check out. Ultimately, served its purpose in introducing us to a style of steak we hadn't had before and did so in a way that we enjoyed.

This was incredible - just melt in your mouth. You have to get this! *Ravioli di Peposo di Manzo al Burro e Timo (Ravioli Stuffed with Stewed Peppered Beef and Tossed in Butter and Thyme) - Peposo is a classic Tuscan dish that's usually tough cuts of meat cooked down in Chianti wine. Loved this 'twist' on a classic dish. They also so kindly split this portion for us which was perfect. The Peposo was perfection; if they just had Peposo as a dish, I'd order it! *Bistecca dell'Osteria (House Specialty Bone In Steak) - the star of the show!! While this isn't Chianni cattle or anything, this was fantastic piece of steak. Perfectly executed at medium rare. Love that the menu states "If you prefer your meat more so well done we would be happy to recommend another dish to you." Ha. Make sure you order a BOTTLE of wine! They have GREAT local options at super reasonable price points.
