Not sure why our other party got Salmon at an Italian restaurant in Italy but to each his own. If you want a glass of wine you only have two choices, white wine and red wine. No other available. This is probably because the restaurant doesn't carry large inventories of wine due to their small size and cost. Overall no way is this above an average restaurant. It's just okay. Heat up your lasagna better, teach your chef how to cook Salmon and expand your glasses of wine selections.

This dish was succulent, with a nice mild taste of rosemary, but the gravy is what did it for me. It was rich in flavor, creamy, and I wanted to pick my plate up and lick it clean....but I didn't. The veggies were lightly grilled with olive oil and mixed well with my meal. I then had to top if off with a few different pastries. I can't tell you the name, I just pointed until I was done. I had a pistachio pastry, a lemon pastry, Nutella filled pastry, and a pistachio filled....all were delicious and devoured. You can study restaurant reviews all you want, but sometimes you just have the good fortune to wander into a wonderful restaurant. And that was exactly our experiences at Al Mercante. We ate on the beautiful terrace which faces the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana art museum. The small piazza where Al Mercante is located was very quiet at night. The interior of Al Mercante is quite elegant. While the majority of the clientele were foreigners, there was small wedding party a couple of tables over. We had the very good fortune to be waited on by Angelo, a professional waiter who loves his job (23 years at Al Mercante!) and who ensured that we had a fine dining experience. Angelo speaks beautiful Spanish and we were able to have a more complete discussion than usual about the menu. I've managed to forget the details of the wonderful food we ate so I hope I. don't commit any serious omissions as I reconstruct our meal. We had an appetizer which I cannot recall. I think it was some sort of raw fish (crudo sounds better) with just a hint of citrus almost like an Italian version of ceviche. Our primo (shared) was wonderful: porcini mushrooms on roasted potatoes. What great taste from two simple ingredients. The secondo (also shared) was salmon coated in sliced almonds and a wonderful lemony sauce. Quite simply it was perfect. We had a terrific white wine that might have been a vermentino. Angelo didn't have biscotti with vino santo so he suggested sbrisolona -- another kind of dessert biscuit. -- that seemed to be homemade -- and a digestivo. In between all of this were wonderful amuse bouche. Here's what I'd like you to know: this was a wonderful, elegant meal served by a very professional waiter in beautiful surroundings. The people at Taglio offer a wide variety of specialty coffee from different origins and where one can select the method (V60, Aeropress etc). Execution is good but their own roast is good (don't get me wrong it totally beats anything else from Italy) but they also have coffee from other roasters. All together the coffee itself is a reason to visit but Taglio is so much more as they also serve excellent food. The pasta I had was a nice example of well-made uncomplicated food. They are also a deli so sell a lot of charcuteries and cheeses as well as other food items (tea, coffee, beverages, granola etc) The service was nice, friendly, mostly English speaking and fairly fast and they also have free wifi (however with mandatory facebook login) so a place I will visit again. Only minor drawback would be the price level - dinner easily came to €50 per head and while not super-expensive it is still a bit on the high side for more of a neighborhood place.

They were seconds out of the oven fresh. Flaky, a bit crispy, but entirely soft in the middle. Simply amazing. I didn't stop until the bag was empty. I had the gnocchi in a light tomato sauce as my lunch. Again, simple but cooked to perfection, soaking up all the sauce on the plate.
