I just had the most amazing experience with Ikea Mike. I moved into a new apartment and the room I took was originally was a dining room. The room needed a 4th wall. I went to IKEA and found a couple PAX closet units that would work as a wall, except IKEA wouldn't install it themselves. Que Ikea Mike. While in line at IKEA I came across Mike on Yelp and gave him a call. Within 10 minutes he called me back and before i have even gone through the store checkout, he asked the most thorough questions to make sure there was no stone unturned in this process. He asked me to send him the item numbers of the products I just bought, and he knew exactly what the task at hand was before even meeting me in person. This is when I knew he was the real deal. He even caught a mistake in the ordering process that IKEA did not. If it wasn't for him, I would have been stuck with incorrect items, but instead I was able to make the change to my order before it shipped. His attention to detail is incredible. On installation day, which was scheduled for 3 days after I first contacted him, he arrived on time and was more than prepared. He completed the job in less time than expected and his finished product was better than I could have ever imagined. He transformed a dining room into a living room, and did so with more care and attention to detail that I could have ever asked for. He pointed out things I would have never noticed. He helped make sure the units were leveled even though the floor they were on was not. I cannot say enough great things about this experience. Mike is amazing!!! I just moved from Japan to California with 2,000 lbs worth of household good. The Japanese movers took apart every pieces of furniture I had and put all the hardware in a single box... and tragically, the hardware box was LOST during shipment. I called more than a dozen of furniture repair shops, carpenter / upholstery shop and construction contractors, and no one were able to or willing to help me... Even the furniture manufacture (i.e. West Elm and Crates & Barrel) won't let me order hardware alone. As a result, I've been eating and living on the floor for about four months until I found Mike. He was the only one that responded to my call right away and agreed to take a look at the mess I'm in... After I sent him some photos of my furniture pieces, he scheduled a site visit to my home to evaluate the extend of my problem, even though I told him I'm not sure if the insurance company would pay for his service and I live 60 miles from San Francisco, he came anyway. We hired Mike to put together several of our recent IKEA purchases (tv stand, large wall unit, shoe racks). He arrived as scheduled and was able to get the work done in less time than he had estimated. He checked and double-checked his work to make sure that all of the doors & drawers opened and closed properly. I thoroughly enjoyed my first appointment with Michael and leave this review with that caveat. This review is not about the quality of his work - he was neat, clean, pleasant to talk to and extremely well organized. In no time at all, he assembled two large metal cabinets, hung a picture, wall-mounted a tv, changed the handle on my front door and sold me a MacBook Air that he no longer wanted. So again, this review is not about the quality of his work but about the quality of his interaction and his possible understanding of issues of race and gender and body size. I was very distressed the second time I wanted to hire Michael. I knew he was very busy (previous times I had called him, he was unable to work) so I scheduled an appointment over a week in advance for some installation work I wanted done before some guests arrived. He texted me the night before and said he was not able to come. I was very disappointed because no explanation was given for this, but, very happy with the quality of his previous work, I rescheduled for the following week (3 days before the guests would arrive). When I texted to confirm the appointment, I told him I would be home, and would run out to go to an appointment after he came. He said he could not stay at my home alone. I said, no problem, it's just a medical appointment so I'll reschedule it and be home the whole time you are there. He refused to meet with me, saying he could not allow me to cancel a medical appointment. I was quite upset, letting him know it was not an urgent medical appointment, and that it felt like a form of microaggression for a thin white man to tell me, a large woman of color, whether it was okay for me to cancel a medical appointment. He did not reply. Desperate to get the work done before my guests arrived, I offered to show proof of the trivial nature of the appointment and the rescheduled date. I then texted him screen shots of that proof. He finally replied and said he could not come at all and would not work with me and hoped I understood. When i explained I did not understand and that it landed as a form of microaggression, he did not respond. After some time, he then texted to say it was a liability issue for him to meet with me knowing I had canceled an appointment (a claim that made no sense since he at that point had ample proof it was a rescheduled, non-urgent appointment). I was polite the entire time I interacted with him. He never addressed any of my concerns about the possible microaggressions, never satisfactorily explained why he would no longer keep the appointment. Several friends suggested he was either embarrassed because it was indeed a microaggression, or that he had an offer of more extensive work that he wanted to take. I'm posting this review because, regardless of the quality of a man's work, his attitude towards women, his ability to be courteous and responsive when he makes a mistake, and his dependability and reliability are hugely important, and Michael did not meet these standards in his second interaction with me. Again, great quality work, but really disturbing interaction from a critical awareness lens. (PS - I waited almost a month before posting this review; it's not done in anger, more in the hopes that Michael and other craftpeople like him would really consider the impact of how they relate to customers, especially across differences in gender and class.) read more

I've never had an IKEA near me and just knew that assembling my Mandal bed frame would be beyond me. Mike has been easy to contact via phone/text from the beginning and was very flexible with his scheduling. His rates are very reasonable for his first rate customer service and assembly skills. I initially had him come to assemble my bed and TV unit from IKEA but he only assembled my tv unit the first time since IKEA had delivered the wrong parts. If my bed frame wasn't so large (and therefore couldn't fit his car), then he would have driven all the way to Palo Alto where it was in stock to exchange the parts for me. He left after assembling the TV unit and promised that when I had the correct boxes for my bed that he would assemble it for the remainder of the agreed upon price. Once I finally had my bed delivered, Mike came over and assembled it along with my desk (also IKEA though this time I picked it up at the store myself). He even fixed the loose drawer from the TV unit from before for me! Initially he had estimated 3 hours for the bed and desk but finished within 2. My mom and I had less than a week to get prepared for my grandmother to move to California and live at my mom's. I live in Texas and was able to coordinate with Mike over text the assembly of her furniture. Two days before the scheduled appointment, the ikea delivery truck got held up at the warehouse and the delivery got delayed a week, when I told Mike about it he told me to cancel the original order and he would go and pick up everything and deliver it as well.
